1.

Attendace (25% of the total grade)


a. This will be taken at the beginning of the class everyday by the instructor
b. This will also be taken at the concert and any other after school, unless excused by the
instructor
2. Playing Test (25% of the total grade)
a. There will be a playing test (either recording or online) for every concert cycle
b. This will include all the pieces that they will be playing in all the cycles
c. Students will have 4 or 5 days from the day excerpt is assigned to turn in the test
d. All the playing tests weight the same; the test will be averaged out at the end of the
semester and the total average will be 25% of the total grade
3. Written Assignments (5% each, 15% total)
a. There will be written assignment for the following pieces:
i. Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 (Third Movement); October Concert
1. Students are required to listen to a recording of this piece and then to
answer questions regarding the style and characteristics of Baroque
music; worksheet will be provided
ii. Romanian Folk Dances; March Concert
1. Students will receive a worksheet to research Romanian folk dances;
questions will include characteristics and style of Romanian folk dances,
historical or political questions from certain period in Romania, and
instruments that they used to perform folk songs
iii. Locust Street Rag; May Concert
1. Students will be asked to research about rag music regarding its
historical background; worksheet will be provided to guide their
research
2. Students will be required to write a short essay (1-2 pages) about
historical background of rag music
4. Quizzes (5% of the total grade)
a. Students will be required to complete a musical notation quiz at least three times a
week
b. This will occur every Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays
c. The quiz will be graded by a partner in pen, and will be graded for accuracy
d. The quiz will be averaged out at the end of the semester and will be 5% of the total
grade
5. Participation (15% of the total grade)
a. This will occur throughout the semester/year and students will be assessed informally
b. This will be focused on ensemble/group instead of individual
c. Some questions to consider will be: are students participating in all activities? Are
students focused and learning (especially in the back of the section)?
d. I will write a log for students who are not fulfilling the participation requirement and will
be addressed accordingly
6. Practice Log (15% of the total grade)
a. Students will receive a practice log on Monday and will turn it in on Friday with parent
signature

b. Students will log how long they had practiced and sheet will also have checklist with
ways to practice
