Deceit
I thought I could trust those two; I really thought I could. They seemed so bright, and I
perceived them as trustworthy. Oh how I judged them wrong. They tricked me, deceiving me
with false words, and I had faith in them, because I had distorted hopes in my mind. Now theyll
go down in history as brilliant scientists who proved the whole world wrong, and Ill be left
behind as they rush to ultimate glory. I have to thank them though, because of their deception
and betrayal, I was compelled to fight for rights of women.
It all started on what seemed to be a bright, dazzling day in the 1950s. I was in my lab,
located at Columbia University, and I was researching as always. I remember planning to go
home early, so I could avoid the atrocious traffic that seemed to engulf New York City at this
time, and actually have a nice dinner with my family. Thats when the seemingly hopeful duo
walked in. Their names: Tsung-Dao Lee, and Chen Ning Yang. Lee had a round face, framed by
short black hair. His eyes were dark, yet held a thirst for knowledge. He had a hopeful smile on
his face Yangs face was more rectangular, and his eyes were larger and lighter. However they
had the same hair, and the same hopeful look on my face.
Is this the lab of Professor Chien Shiung Wu?
I paused, and looked up, brushing the stray ebony hairs out of my face. My hair never
seemed to stay in the bun I put it in. This was my lab, as the very first female physics professor I
got my own, but what did these two want?
Yes, this is she. Can I help you with anything, or do you need directions?
Actually were here to ask for help. Lee responded, still not losing that awkward grin
plastered onto his face.

Im sure you know of the hypothetical Law of Conservation of Parity. Weve

concluded that that theory will prove to be false. The reason why weve come to you is, we need
you to prove our hypothesis right. In other words, we want you to conduct experiments to test
whether our theory is correct or false. Yang informed me, his hopeful expression replaced with
a somber, professional one.
I knew why they needed me. It wouldve been much easier to just find a random physicist
with the same credentials, and have them perform the experiment. However that wouldnt get
them what they needed. No, they needed someone with respect in the community. Id earned that
when I was involved with the Manhattan Project, so much respect that some would even call me
The First Lady of Physics. After some consideration, I agreed to team up with Lee and Yang, and
experiment whether this Parity law is true. Thats the exact moment when everything went
wrong.

After that fateful meeting, I followed through with my end of the bargain. Lee and Yang
hypothesized that Conservation of Parity would prove true for electromagnetic, and strong
nuclear forces, but it would be false with weak nuclear forces. By working with cobalt 60, and
cooling it down to extreme temperatures, in order to measure if this principle would prove true.
Lee and Yang were correct, and I immediately rushed to tell them the news. We might even win
a Nobel Prize because of this! When I told them the news, it was less than what I had
hypothesized.
I couldnt wait to get back to New York to tell Lee and Yang about this discovery!
Against all odds, those two were actually correct!
Lee! Yang! You two were right! The principle is false! I couldnt believe it myself, you
both are absolutely brilliant!
Lee and Yang suddenly smirked, and my excitement vaporized. Thats great! Thanks for
working to get us our Nobel Prize, and when I say our, Im not including you.

I was shocked, but that soon turned to anger. I stormed out.

Lee and Yang went on to win their Nobel Prize, with myself being discluded of course. I
was furious beyond the description of words. They had discluded me, all because I was a
woman! I promised I would show them how Im just as brilliant as they are. My father always
taught me that women and men were created equal, so there was no need to this stigma. If I
thought anyone would believe that as well, it wouldve been those two. However, like the law I
proved incorrect, my assumptions were false. They had the same jaded views as most other men
at this time, but I would show them. I would prove to them just how righteous women are, and I
wouldnt rest until I did.
Im still working towards gaining the credit I deserve for conducting that experiment, but
Im absolutely certain that my time to shine will come. Weve come so far with womens rights,
but we arent finished yet. Times are changing, and I will not stop wavering them until I, and
women all around the world, get the acknowledgement for the work they deserve dearly.
