Advanced Engineering Mathematics (MATH 510)
Course Objective:
1 - To teach advanced analytical methods in Mathematics
2 - To demonstrate the applicability of these methods in various engineering topics (dynamic
systems, signal processing, heat transfer and wave propagation)

Course Prerequisite by topics:


Calculus I (MATH 313), Calculus II (MATH 314), and a primitive knowledge of MATLAB (or any
computing software)

Course Topics & Schedule:


Week 1: Review of complex numbers algebra, geometric representation, and basic
transformation
Week 2: Analytic functions, Cauchy-Riemann equations, contour integration
Week 3: Singularities, zeros, Residues, and Cauchy integral formula
Week 4: Power series, Laurent series and convergence

Week 5: Periodic functions and Fourier series
Week 6: Fourier transform, frequency spectrum, and frequency response of dynamic systems
Week 7: Partial differential equations (PDE) and separation of variables
Week 8: Elliptic boundary value problems (BVP) in one and two dimensions, (Laplace and
Poisson's equations)

Week 9: Case study of parabolic BVP: heat equation
Week 10: Case study of hyperbolic BVP: wave equation in Cartesian, cylindrical and spherical
systems
Week 11: Introduction to the Sturm-Liouville problem, method of characteristics for first order
PDEs
Week 12: General review, make-up for any missing materials, problem solving in preparation
for the final exam.

There will be NO make-up quizzes or final exam unless a valid excuse is presented. Late
homework assignment will not be accepted. The quizzes are held during class time, they are
closed book and notes. The final exam is comprehensive, of 2-hour duration and closed book
and notes.
