Dear Parents/Guardians,

My name is Christine Parfitt and I am a student teacher from Vancouver Island

University, currently in the Bachelor of Education program. I am in my 4th year of school and will
be doing my Education practicum in your childs class throughout the year. A bit about myself, I
am from Port Alberni and graduated here in 2007. I have attended both North Island College
and now Vancouver Island University for my Post-Secondary education. I will be teaching your
child lessons and working alongside Mrs. Mayes periodically from now until May. I am really
looking forward to working with your child and building up my teaching experience this year.
I am sending this letter home to give a bit of information to you about what I will be
teaching your child in the first two weeks of December while I will be in your childs class. One of
the major lessons and assignment that I will be teaching your child will be the Skeletal System
which is only one part of our Human Body unit for Science this year. The Human Body takes up
a majority of this years Life Science learning outcomes for your child. At the end of this unit
your child will be able to illustrate and describe the human skeletal system as well as explain
how the skeletal system works through demonstration through 3-D representation. The final
assignment for this unit will involve your child creating a human skeleton out of household
goods. An example of this is making the bones in a human hand using Q-tips. Please keep this
in mind over the next few weeks and keep any clean, recyclable items that you feel may work
for this end project. Any resources that your child will need I will provide in class time. We will
also be using our grade 5 Science text. My only request for you is to supply them with
recyclables for our final project. Your child will be evaluated on how well he/she knows the
skeletal system and are expected to describe the basic functions within this system. I will
assess each students work using a 4 point scale, 4 meaning exceeds expectations, 3 meaning
meets all expectations, 2 meaning meets some expectations and 1 meaning does not meet
expectations. Students will also be expected to behave in an appropriate manner while the

lessons are being taught and while the final project is being made they are expected to
complete their 3-D representation of a human skeleton in a timely manner.
I am looking forward to teaching your child all about the skeletal system. If you have any
questions, comments, or concerns, I am available through email at crparfitt@gmail.com. I am
also available for an hour before or after school during December 1st-12th. Feel free to stop by
and meet me during the first two weeks in December while I am at the school.
Sincerely,
Christine Parfitt
