The aim of this study was to evaluate which trace

element has the greatest effect on the growth of thraustochytrids.

Twelve thraustochytrid strains representing 6 genera (Aurantiochytrium,
Oblongichytrium, Parietichytrium, Schizochytrium,
Thraustochytrium and Ulkenia) were used in this study.
FeCl3x6H2O 0.29 g/L
ZnSO4x7H2O 0.267
prepared with half-strength (50%) artificial seawater
(ASW). The ASW contained 30.0 g NaCl, 0.7 g KCl, 10.8 g
MgCl2x6H2O, 5.4 g MgSO4x7H2O and 1.0 g CaCl2x2H2O per liter of
ultrapure water.
Each thraustochytrid strain was
grown in 50-ml glass flasks containing 20 ml of basal medium
with orbital shaking (128 rpm) at 28C.
The pH was adjusted to 7.0
before autoclaving.
