State Rep. Debbie Phillips Announces Funds for Waterway Improvements

Funds to invest in Washington and Morgan counties, use local construction firm

ATHENS – State Representative Debbie Phillips (D-Athens) announced today that the state has agreed to
spend $351,000 for safety improvements along several locks of the Muskingum Water Parkway in
Washington and Morgan counties.

“Southeastern Ohio is blessed with bountiful natural resources which improve our quality of life and
create unique economic opportunities for our communities,” Rep. Phillips said. “I am pleased to see the
state investing in Washington and Morgan counties while creating a safer environment for people who
work on the waterway every day. The construction process will employ people from right here in
southeastern Ohio and provide economic benefits for years to come.”

The funds will be used for several safety improvements along locks 3, 4 and 9 in Washington County and
6 and 8 in Morgan County. Improvements include installing over 1,000 feet of safety rails along locks,
installing sixteen walkways along the locks, constructing nine operator platforms and replacing wood
sheathing at several locations.

Lang Masonry Contractors Inc, of Waterford has been selected as the general contractor for the project.
The improvements are expected to be completed by May 2010.

The state Controlling Board this afternoon also approved spending $58,300 for microenterprise
programs in the district.
