SLEEP WELL
INTERIOR DESIGNER
ANJALI GOEL SHARES
HER VIEWS ON
SELECTING THE RIGHT
MATTRESS FOR A
GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP.

omfortable sleep is very important for

a fresh state of mind. It rejuvenates
one to work with full energy. Mattresses
indeed play an important role in providing
a comfy and contended sleep.
Interior Designer Anjali Goel says, Quality
of sleep is very important. One should be
very conscious about selecting the correct
mattress as we devote good amount of
time in sleeping. We make all efforts in
educating people about the right kind of
mattress for them. I personally prefer spring
mattresses as it is soft and give that sinking
feeling which I love the most.
Sharing insights about selecting the right
mattress, Anjali says, Mattresses should be
selected keeping in mind ones own body
type. One must dedicate a day entirely
to mattresses and make a visit to mattress
galleries for experiencing the look and feel
of the mattress rather than just rushing for
whatever is available at the first glance.

Sustainability

French Ar. M Jerome Vincon of Lode Architecture has designed The C House by incorporating
sustainable features. The solar heat gained during summer is used for heating the swimming
pool. The terrace is kept cool with the help of solar panels on the roof. The heat generated is
also used in providing hot water to the entire home. The north position of the patio highlights
the temperature difference between the two sides of the house. This architectural system
allows natural cooling by convection without air conditioning. The entire home is insulated
with concrete slabs on the exterior.

urban
tree houses

going green

Vietnam-based Vo Trong Nghia Architects has

designed House for Trees, an effort to counter
rapid urbanization and reintroduce nature in the
city of Ho Chi Minh. With prototypical houses, the
project aims to add green space into the city by
accommodating high-density dwellings with big
tropical trees. Five concrete boxes function as pots
that hold trees planted in them. With a thick soil
layer, these tall structures also function as storm
water basins for detention and retention, thereby
reducing the risk of ooding the city.

Mumbai-based architectural rm Premnath and

Associates has designed the Cygnus World School in
Vadodra. Spread over 7.5 acres of land, the school
uses sustainable practices like rainwater harvesting
and cross-ventilation. Every classroom is planned
with ventilators above windows and doors, keeping
the internal area well-ventilated and cool.
Ambient temperatures are maintained with
vermiculite plaster from inside and the tile cladding
from outside, which add to the heat insulation of
y-ash brick walls. The terrace has a layer of heat
insulating white glazed tiles that reects heat. Other
sustainable materials used for the construction
include low VOC materials like paints and sealants
bagasse boards for manufacturing of furniture and
other recycled materials.

Efficient Designs

Mexico-based Garduno Architects has

designed O2 Restaurant. The architects
have transformed an underground plaza of
a parking lot into this garden restaurant by
incorporating ingenious sustainable ideas.
A unique heating system was invented for
this place, where the heat generated by the
kitchen is absorbed by copper coils containing
a uid with a very high boiling point. The heat
is then channeled through the terrace oor
and to the bases of masonry couches on the
terrace bar. This heating process not only
provides comfort to clients but also save the
kitchen from using an additional mechanical
cooling system. Some sections use LED lighting
and the furniture is made of certied wood.

Sustainable Opulence

Washington-based architects Coates Design,

have designed The Ellis Residence that raises the
bar for energy-efcient housing, while maintaining
aesthetics and livability. Perched high upon
Yeomalt Bluff, the home enjoys breathtaking views
of the Puget Sound and City of Seattle.
The home uses 70 per cent less energy compared to
an average North American home. This is achieved
through the use of geothermal heat, photo-voltaic
energy collection, solar hot water, thermal massing
and heat-recovery technologies. Additional features
include rainwater collection cisterns, radiant oor
heating, triple-glazed windows and a vegetated
roof. The design comprises lush outdoor greenery
with contemporary indoor designs.

Upcycled Workspace

Ahmedabad-based architect and interior

designer Suraj Kathe of Suraj Kathe Architects
has designed an ofce for Collective Trade
Links using metallic industrial waste along with
salvaged material. Industrial waste sheets such
as sheer and partitions and car wastes were
procured and aesthetically integrated into the
design as light xtures and other decorative and
functional elements. Apart from these materials,
treated chemical containers were used as
planters in this zero impact workspace design.
The project is an ideal example of reduce,
reuse and recycle practice.

Award Winning Design

Design firms Snhetta and Dialog have released the design for the
New Central Library in Calgary. The stunning structure aims to fulfill the citys
vision for a technologically advanced public space, for research and collaboration.
Inspired by the nearby foothills, the architects will create a terraced topography
that steps over an existing light rail transit line which crosses the site. At its
mid-section, the building rises to form an arched, wood-clad entry that serves
as a new public plaza and directly connects pedestrians through the site from
neighbouring communities.

Upcycled Chair
UK-based product designers Andrew
McDonald and Simon Taylor of the firm
Two Makers have designed the Randonneur
Chair by using bicycle geometries and
traditional frame-building techniques.
The classic steel tubing rocking chair was
inspired by the hand-built racing and touring
bicycles of the 1940s. The framework is
assembled with air-hardening heat-treated
steel tubing, while the seat is made from
sustainable hardwood and saddle leather,
which offers a balance of strength, weight and
comfort. The design is both a celebration of
cycling and of bespoke British craftsmanship.

Knotted Structure
London-based architectural firm Atelier Chang has designed Knot House; a resort, which
includes five residential structures on Geoje Island, South Korea. Built for South Korean
hospitality group House of Mind, these five buildings have been staggered diagonally
down the slope with walls that fold up from the ground and across into the living rooms.
Full-height glazing rises three to five m. tall in each apartment to maximize views across the
water. Sections of timber from the terraces continue inside along the ceilings to provide a
visual connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. At the entrance to each apartment,
the roof folds down to provide an angular covered porch.

Sailing Wellness
Russian architect Vasily
Klyukin has designed the
White Sails Hospital & Spa,
a stunning hospital design
shaped like a ship that is
set to take shape in Tunisia
Economic City. This project has
been envisioned as a medical
facility-cum-international clinic
for patients to experience
peace rather than fear.
A mammoth, ship-shaped
structure spans across the
site, with four towering
sails accommodating labs,
preventive care centers and a
wellness spa.

Distinctive Creation
Italian architect Leonardo Rossano in
collaboration with Belo Horizonte-based
architect Debora Mansur has designed
the DNA Bench, for furniture brand
True Design. Inspired by dynamic forms of
biogenetics, the modular bench is designed
using a unique construction technique
where a single section of curved plywood
is replicated in design to create multiple
seating configurations. The captivating
piece of furniture is shaped after the helix
form. Each section creates an individual
seat for users.

o create a functionally efcient ofce for ZS

Associates, a company primarily into sales and
marketing consultancy and also outsourcing,
technology and software services, DSP Design
Associates rst understood the companys
employee prole.
The team headed by Shweta Grover along the
team members Anamika Chatterjee, Harvinder
Singh and Harish Saini did an extensive research
on the companys work culture. Once they found
that the employee were knowledge workers,
who required a stimulating environs that would
facilitate opportunities to create innovative ideas,
they systematically classied their work modes
into four groups i.e. Focus, Collaborate, Learn and
Socialise. The work desks and cabins were a part
of the Focused Work Mode; under a Collaborative
Mode meeting rooms and collaboration hubs were
created; the training and meeting rooms were a
part of Learn Mode; while cafeteria, gym, breakout
areas became a part of the Socializing mode.

This ZS wall area is an

inspirational area to

soaking in some lofty
thinking.

As the company was moving

to their own ofce, measuring
1, 36,197 sq. ft. area, the change
in their working style and work
mode posed as the major
challenge for the architectural
rm. A complete overview of
their work culture, requirement
and wish-lists had to be
understood and amalgamated
with contemporary workplace
trends to bring about a versatile,
agile and collaborative work
place, says Shweta Grover, DSP
Design Lead for this project.
The scale was an important
consideration for the client to
meet their future requirements.
So, the rm tackled this need
by using the workstation as a
building module and
applied linear benching
system to achieve a higher
headcount and make the
workspace more efcient.

this large cafeteria.

Smaller breakout zones turn into

colourful niches for discussion and

The workstation can be rearranged to t a new work setting, while ample open space provides
a future scope of expansion, which gives the facility more strategic viability, Shweta adds.
Being a rm conscious of its environmental impact, DSP has adopted eco-friendly features
across the entire building such as occupancy sensors, LED lighting xtures; besides placing all the
workstations along the glazing so as to make the best use of the natural light.
Another important design aspect is the vibrant colour scheme introduced through the corporate colours
orange, rust, teal and purple infuse a warm and vibrant atmosphere and a sense of belongingness to the
space. However, to offset this dynamic colour palette, which could have been a tad busy for an ofce
interior, the rm has prociently integrated subdued hues such as black, white, grey and brown.

NETHERLANDS-BASED CUBE ARCHITECTEN

TRANSFORMED AN OLD STOREROOM IN
AMSTERDAM INTO T PARKA VERDANT,
SEMI-PUBLIC PLAZA THAT HAS A SUSTAINABLE
DESIGN AND USES UPCYCLED MATERIALS.
Text: Delilah Rodrigues Photographs: Yvonne Lukkenaar

n old storeroom in
Jodenbreestraat, Amsterdam, which is now redeveloped
into a T Parka sustainable semi-public plaza. Architects
Pieter van der Pot and Marloes van Heteren of architectural
rm CUBE Architecten were choosen to design this
multi-functional plaza after winning a closed competition.
Spread over an area of approximately 5,700 sq. ft.,
the old storeroom was completely revamped adopting
green design and using upcycled materials into a swanky
interactive space.
Located at the entrance of the huge ofce building,
the plaza has a reception desk that also interconnects
with the rest of the building. An admirable feature of this
multi-purpose space is that the plaza can now also be used
for working, collaborating, meeting, or just snacking at the
organic food bar that churns out delicacies like pastries,
beverages and sandwiches. Presentations and meetings
can also be held at the plaza.

The process of transforming an

old storeroom into this verdant
plaza was not an easy task.
A unique and refreshing aspect of
the multi-functional space is the use
of real ora throughout the space.
Large plant cages that vary in size
are suspended from the ceiling to
form a canopy between real
birch trunks. The plants in the
hanging cages were an essential
part of the design right from the
beginning as they not only ensure
good air quality and a green
experience, but also have a
positive effect on the acoustics.

These plant cages were the biggest challenge in the design

process. Initially, we looked at an automatic watering system,
but, in the end, we opted to hang them on 10 electric hoists that
are usually found only in theatres. Every 4-5 weeks these cages
are lowered to take care of the hydroponic plants, says
Ar. Pieter van der Pot. Plants are used in other parts of the plaza
as well. Planters that form a natural lter are hung along the
large glass doors. The huge rimmed windows that bring in natural
light are also accentuated with hanging plants, giving them an
added touch of greenery.
The colour scheme of the plaza includes hues of green,
brown and white with a pop of yellow for the lantern-like
lighting xtures. Speaking about the use of a limited colour
palette, Marloes van Heteren says, The colour palette used
across the space embodies a sense of calmness. The walls
consist of imprints of shadows of leaves, while one wall has
monochrome wallpaper that replicates tree trunks, giving the
space a forested feel. The textured ooring in grey and brown
has the natural look of a mud oor. The grey ceiling is given a
rugged unnished look with a grainy texture and exposed large
grey pipe-like structures.

The dimly-lit food bar is made of pinewood laths that are spaced
15 mm. apart is covered by an acoustic cloth. The insides of the
food bar is clad in green and yellow checkered tiles. The architects
have used an assortment of distinctive lighting xtures, sourced
from different brands that help to break the monotony and make
for a riveting atmosphere. Pendant lights used above the counter
and above some of the tables and chairs are recycled from the
storage depots of the municipality of Amsterdam.
Sustainability being one of the key principles; many furniture
pieces used in the plaza are also recycled from articles found in
various depots of the municipality. We could reuse parts for the
installations and the furniture pieces, adds Pieter. The seating
arrangements include an interesting melange of furniture pieces
in different forms and sizes, placed between trees just like in a
park. Some of the eye-catching furniture pieces include green
wave-shaped lounge chairs and tree stubs used as seating
tables. Most of the tables are reused, while others are made
from birch trees.
The architects have denitely attained their goal of making
this multi-purpose plaza resemble a garden or park; thus,
giving Amsterdam a functional yet peaceful space to sit back
and enjoy.

aking on the challenge of

designing a sea-facing apartment
at Napeansea Road; one of
Mumbais posh addresses is denitely a
dream come true for any architect or
designer. Young architect couple
Gaurav and Vidhita Kharkar of
Gaurav Kharkar & Associates had a
free-hand in conceptualizing, designing
and executing the complete interiors.
However, the only criterion was the home
should not only reect the owner Chetan
Doshis jet-setting lifestyle, but also take
care of the functional requirements of
the entire family. Being a businessman,
in the construction and pharmaceuticals
industry, with a air for good life, the
benchmark was already high when it
came to the interiors.
Principal architects and interior
designers Gaurav and Vidhita translated
this vision by adopting a rich and opulent
material palette coupled with branded
furniture, ttings and accessories and
teaming it against a neutral backdrop.
Spread over an area of 2,150 sq. ft.
the space had to be diligently utilized
to ensure four spacious bedrooms apart
from the other functional areas. Clean
lines, smooth and polished surfaces
along with few intricate details highlight
a predominantly contemporary decor,
while exotic marbles, granites and
veneers complement the use of coloured
glass, mirrors and metallic surfaces.
On entering the apartment, one is
greeted by a large corridor where the
architects have tactfully created an
illusion of space by opting for mirrors on
one side of the wall. One cant miss the
unusual shoe rack on the opposite side.
An exotic Brazilian granite Turtle used
on the walls continues into the living
areaspecically onto the plasma
LCD unit, while on the opposite side it
shows off a storage unit with niches in
wave-like patterns.

Attractive
artefacts and
textural surfaces
add an extra
dimension to the
passage area.

A cosy corner
with a glorious
sea view forms
a study area
within the master
bedroom.

The aesthetically placed leaf-shaped mirrors from Villeroy & Boch complements the beige
toned Natuzzi sofas, while bursts of colours are infused through the Shiva painting, soft furnishing
and artefacts.
In the dining area, the singular block of entangled wood with a circular clear glass top itself
is a piece of art from Italian brand Porada. Replicating the circular dining table is the dome-like
carved wooden ceiling and Artimide hanging pendant light. It is anked on one side by a
semi-precious stone embossed bird motif artwork while on the other side are dark veneer-clad
dinette units that make spaces for all the cutlery. Between the two dinette units is a functional
kitchen, with steel panels on the dado and back-painted blue glass on the shutters.
One notes a gradual transformation in the decor from functional areas to the personalized
areas where the master bedroom exudes a lavish and private vibe. Automated roller blinds
provide privacy to the see-through bathroom, while exotic Brazilian granite Cardhu adds a
touch of glamour to the bathing area. This yellow-coloured granite window breaks the monotony
of the plain walls while the blue colour from the paintings and cushions exude a cool vibe.
To add an element of warmth and complement the granite, we have used fumed chestnut
veneer, informs Gaurav. Smartly concealed within the overall panelling is the toilet door with a
mirror band running vertically; three full-height sliding shutters are seen on the wardrobesthe
central overlapping shutter is nished in veneer with horizontal ribs providing continuity of material
in a different form. The two side shutters are mirror-nished brightening up the room as well as
enhancing its volume, he adds.

The mauve and

white pattern
designed
wardrobe
shutters exude a
youthful vibe in
the daughters
bedroom.

Sleek and
shiny surfaces
dene the sons
bedroom.

6
Most importantly, storage has been handled deftly: for instance, the L-shaped television panel has ample
storage within. Adding another dimension to the decor is a window near the study table that offers a
panoramic view of the sea.
The parents bedroom is a fusion of classic and contemporary styles with back-lit jaali patterns on the side
panelling of veneer, which exudes a sophisticated look, while the stylish Italian branded Giusti Portos bed
along with a regal looking maroon lounge chair adds opulence to the room. Visual continuity is ensured with
the use of white and maroon coloured exotic marble Montepulciano in the bathroom.

Yellow-coloured
granite peeps
from the
see-through
window in the
master bedroom
adds vibrancy to
the overall decor.

The black and

white hanging
pendant light
complements
the bedrest in the
daughters room.

8
A young and playful feel has been rendered in the daughters room with the use of mauve, white and grey
tones. Fior di Pesco Carnico, an Italian marble clads the window above the headrest wall, while the wardrobe
shutters display a random mix of mirrors and back-painted glass animating the space with a youthful look.
Sleek and trendy best describe the sons bedroom with the headrest grabbing attention. Embossed
steel motif on the Bronze Armani marble used with a chamfer effect as the headrest brings in the glamour
quotient. Smartly designed concealed handles complement the full-height wardrobe shutters while the
black back-painted glass complements the natural veneer.
Overall, a rich textural play of materials fosters a sumptuous feel without being ostentatiousjust what
was intended.

DESIGN TRENDS AND CLASSICAL
INDIAN CULTURE.

mpressive and welcoming, the

luxurious bungalowIndra Hirathe
abode of Varun and Vipul Agrawal in
Dewas, in Madhya Pradesh, reects
the owners impeccable taste and eye
for creativity.
Spread over an area of 9,000 sq. ft.,
the home has been designed by suave
architect Ajay Sharma of Innerspace
who has a magical knack of reading
the minds of his clients, giving them
what they want and yet maintaining
his style and design language.

The staircase

Explaining the clients brief, Ajay says, Being a
well-informed and well-travelled businessman, my client
wanted a home that has all the luxuries, but at the same time
reects traditional values and his humble attitude.
Designed following bio-cosmic principals, developed by
Shri. Raj Shekhar Chawla, the home emanates a positive aura.
An admirable gate opens to a well-manicured garden, which
further leads you into this inviting three-storey bungalow.
In the interiors, the triple-height living room is open to the sky
with a spell-bounding 40 ft. high skylight, enclosed in glass.
The white colour scheme further creates a soothing
ambience, whereas colourful designer furniture pieces
sourced from Roche Bobois add exuberance to this space.
A feature wall clad in Statuario marble has an in-built LCD unit.
Further, one admires the adjacent double-height wall
with a mirror mural that enhances the decor. An attractive
pedestrian light from Catellan Italia takes centre stage in this
area. A portion of the living area has been segregated by a
geometric patterned screen to form the dining area.

The snakes and ladders rug and

animal motifs lend a playful vibe.
Note the admirable yellow and
grey colour combination in this
bedroom.

The white ooring

and a wooden
panelling on the walls
lend this bedroom an
earthy feel.

4
This interactive space has been designed to accommodate
the entire family, also keeping in mind easy accessibility.
In this area, the design highlights are the unusual eight-seater
dining table and interesting lighting xture from Artemide.
This area is further accentuated by a wall treated with bronze
mirror and champagne leang.
Commenting on the bedrooms Ajay adds, We have put
in meticulous and thoughtful thinking, while designing the
bedrooms as they are personal spaces. The master bedroom
follows an all white theme, as white is the favourite colour of the
client. We have also created a blend of champagne leang
with white for a royal look. Under-bed LED lights have been
used for a dreamy effect, while a red couch adds a splash of
colour and tones down the monotonous look of the bedroom.
The sons bedroom has an earthy feel with white ooring
and a wooden panelling on one of the walls. The bed has
an upholstered headboard, with a compact seating at the
footboard. The LCD unit panel has a groove running with defused
light, which also features on the ceiling and a bathroom wall.

4 5

This bedroom has red and

white colour scheme. Note
the side table, which is both
a storage unit and steps to

enhances the look
of the space.

One of the kids bedroom in a combination of yellow and grey has a

mezzanine, which functions as a play area. The railing for this area has
interesting geometrical cutwork. Every single detailing in this room has been
thoughtfully designed. Elements like an orange couch, a rug with a snakes
and ladders print, the chairs, the cushions and the headboard have been
selected with a lot of care. The animal motifs on the wall add a playful
touch to this room. This area is eye-catching and usually the centre of
attraction for visitors as it breaks free from the white colour scheme, informs
the architect. The other kids bedroom is done in a vibrant red and white
combination. The play area in this bedroom is situated behind the bed.
The side table in red and grey performs the dual function of storage and also
as steps to reach the play area.
The bathrooms are well-equipped to provide a rejuvenating and relaxed
ambience. The elder sons bathroom uses ocean travatine and onyx for the
basin counter, which is back-lit. The LCD unit camouaged within the mirror
is an admirable feature of this space. The younger sons bathroom has an
unusual shaped washbasin made in Corian. Most bathroom xtures and
ttings have been sourced from Italy and Spain.
Further, one notes a luxurious drawing room designed with furniture pieces
from Ligne Roset and Roche Bobois. The wooden ooring gives the room a
cosy ambience, while the LCD has an ornamental frame with silver leang.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS TANVI RAJPUROHIT AND

ARCHIS PATEL HAVE STRUCK THE RIGHT BALANCE
BETWEEN TWO DIVERSE STYLES FOR REAL ESTATE
BUILDER VIPUL DHARSANDIYA IN VADODARA.

here is a ne line between opulent and ostentatious decor, and perhaps

the greatest triumph for young designers Tanvi Rajpurohit and Archis Patel
of a+t associates is that they managed to stay on the tasteful side of that
delicate balance for Vipul Dharsandiyas home.

The ow of natural light into the linear

living room highlights the beauty and
intricacy of the classy selection of
furniture and accessories.

The home is
characterized by
wooden accents as
seen here.

Located at Akota, Vadodara, the 2,400 sq. ft., home of real estate builder
Vipul Dharsandiya perfectly reects his afuent lifestyle. Explaining the concept
Tanvi Rajpurohit adds, Our aim was to achieve the clients requirement by
adopting a rich material palette rather than opting for cosmetic embellishments
for this 4BHK apartment. The designer has opted for simple forms and clean
lines, which are highlighted with rich natural materials to radiate grandeur.
Further accentuating the overall decor are the subtle colour palette, thoughtfully
sourced LED light xtures and unusual custom-designed furniture made from
Burma teakwood, veneer, brass and duco paint nishes.

Furniture pieces in the spacious living

room are placed in the centre to
break the linearity, while the artworks
add colour to the space.

The master bedroom is chic, elegant

and sober with a headrest made of
rustic vitried tiles in mehendi green

is bejewelled with rich brass
inlay work.

One wall in the parents bedroom

is clad with Italian stone and the

7&8

Note the traditional

Indian elements in this
largely contemporary
set-up.

Right from the entrance, the thoughtful design style is noticeable. The entrance has
an interesting wall panel made of mint stone mosaic and a wooden panel with graphic
ethnic motifs. These elements are highlighted by the use of indirect lighting. Elaborating
on the dramatic entrance, Tanvi adds, The client wanted a traditional jaali metal safety
door, so we crafted a metal sheet with a contemporary pattern inspired by traditional
designs.
Here on, the layout and space planning is focused on ensuring privacy, both visually
as well as acoustically. It is essential that within the home, one gets a chance to
be at ease. Hence, we have segregated the home into different zonesutility zone,
semi-private zone and personal zone. The kitchen, dining space and storage area are
clubbed into one cluster, next to the puja room. These spaces have a open plan without
rigid walls, Tanvi explains.
As the client is a connoisseur of Indian art, one notes an interesting display of hand-made
Madhubani paintings in the linear living room. All the furniture pieces are placed in the
centre to break the linearity, while the artworks add colour to the space. A noteworthy
mention is the wall behind the diwan that is clad in wallpaper and adorned with
Madhubani paintings. An alluring lighting xture adds to the opulence of the space.
Two full-length French doors, anked on either side of the seating arrangement, allow
access to the semi-covered balcony. To maintain continuity, the design pattern on
the back of the swing is replicated on the metal mural and hung on one of the
balcony walls.
The all white kitchen has white composite marble platform and walls, duco painted
furniture and cabinetry in white. Breaking the monotony of white are the dark wood
breakfast table and seating, customized by the talented duo. The use of traditional
materials gives this space a contemporary Indian theme.

Tucked away in a corner, the bedrooms reect the personality of its occupants.
In terms of design, the variety of materials used is what distinguishes each of the three
bedrooms. One wall in the parents bedroom is clad with Italian stone. The headboard
of the bed has a stylish pattern on leather, while the master bedroom is chic, elegant
and sober. Here the wall behind the bed is adorned with rustic vitried tiles in mehendi
green. The intermediate wooden panel is bejewelled with rich brass inlay work. The rest
of the furniture is in walnut polished veneer. According to the designers, they enjoyed
doing up the childrens bedroom the most. Unlike the usual trend of using bright colours,
they maintained a more matured design scheme for this bedroom. We have provided
an elevated platform space on two sides of the bed to create free space for leisure and
play activities. Further, keeping their age in mind, we introduced a graphic panel with
inspiring quotes by Mahatma Gandhi. The overall ambience is neither too traditional nor
too trendy, but more contemporary, Tanvi says.
On the onset, the home has a simplistic quality to it. However, the execution of this
project wasnt as simple as it looks. The designers had to face several challenges while
designing the home. Firstly, they had to combine two 2BHK apartments on the topmost
oor of the building to create this single seamless unit. This required many civil changes
and bringing down of old partition walls and building newer walls. Then the client also
wanted an attached dressing zone and bathroom for each of the four bedrooms.
Additionally, we were not supposed to hamper with the existing plumbing lines and
connections as this could have caused problems for the other occupants of the building.
Therefore, the location of the wet spaces like the bathroom and washrooms were
retained, Tanvi adds.
Despite these challenges, Tanvi and Archis have managed to strike the right balance
between functionality and luxury for this apartment.

reen is the colour of the heart chakra; green is the colour of nature; green
is the predominant colour on our planet; but, sadly, the colour is vanishing
from the natural fauna due to the construction boom. However, there
are a few committed individuals who are determined to retain the green
face of the earth. One such individual, who persistently follows the green
philosophy, is Pune-based senior Landscape Architect Shobha Bhopatkar.
Over the years, her rm Shobha Bhopatkar & Associates has witnessed
signicant changes in the professional practice. From solely focusing on
landscape architecture, it has now added a new vertical of Interior Design,
which is headed by Mayuri Bhopatkar Bhakeythe second generation of
the Bhopatkar family. Going down the memory lane, Shobha says,
Earlier, it was a period of struggle for me as I had to work with labourers,
travelling in tempos with plants and soil; and complete the plantation. All of
this was a learning experience. Today, things have changed for the better.
Our work is now more global, competitive and design-oriented process.

Here we take a look at some of the projects designed by architects Shobha Bhoptkar
and Mayuri Bhoptkar Bhakey in Pune.

P L Deshpande Garden (Phase 2)

The P L Deshpande Garden in Pune, designed by Sobha is touted as the largest
Japanese garden in the country. Now in its second phase, the team has re-created
a Mughal Garden, similar to the Shalimar Garden in Srinagar and Brindavan Garden
in Bengaluru. The garden has been thoughtfully landscaped with unique Mughal-style
features like viewing decks, dancing fountains, pavilions with onion domes and
cast-iron railings. The garden has lawns on all sides and ample seating arrangements.
The expanse of the garden has running water and a pool that reects natural elements,
shady and fruit bearing trees, and owering and sprawling lawns. Indeed a masterpiece,
it literally forces you to unwind within its soothing environs.

Park Innia Township

Located on the outskirts of Pune,
Park Innia Township has a simple
contemporary style landscape and
a fully-equipped clubhouse. Here the
challenge was to create a contemporary
and geometrical architectural planning
to create maximum space for amenities.
Hence, the landscape planning follows
a similar design language with minimum
built forms and maximum green spaces;
making it a healthy and sociable space.
In this project, the landscaped area is
developed in the middle of the built form
as a garden and a clubhouse; whereas
the linear piece of land is surrounded by
buildings and roads. Here again,
the team has used a lot of natural
material for the pathways and benches.
They have efciently handled the linear plot
by thorough and efcient space planning.

TCS Sahyadri Park

This project in Pune is inspired by the majestic
Sahyadri mountain range, which is a UNESCO World
Heritage site and one of the eight popular hotspots
of biodiversity in the world. The team has replicated
the mountain ranges by using lawn mounds,
owering trees, shrubs and created water bodies
along meandering pathways. The architect has also
used innovative materials and nishes like pioneer
bricks for pergola columns, sera grey and black lime
cladding for the main structure, yellow limestone
and pebble wash for pathways. An amphitheatre
was designed for performances and as a gathering
space for users.
An admirable effort was made by the architect
to create a sustainable macro-environment within
the campus by planting native species. Truly, a
successful attempt in re-creating the landscape of
the Sahyadri ranges.

Megapolis Township
This huge township in Pune was designed in three phases; namely: Sparklet, Sunway and Splendor.
In order to lend an iconic identity to the entire residential scheme, six podiums were designed in the
similar manner. The orientation of the podiums was decided after studying the accessibility to the
podium and movement around the building cluster. The open space acts as a buffer for phase two
(Sunway) and the main access road. The open space on the ground level is used as a recreational
zone with amenities like a tennis court and other play areas. The landscape is tactfully planned in a way
that it is not interrupted by vehicular movement. The staggered form of the clubhouse itself creates an
enclosure for the swimming pool and ensures good light and ventilation to all the rooms. The full-height
glazing panels were envisioned for the clubhouse to achieve a panoramic view of the amphitheatre.

P N Gadgil
Over the past decade, legendary retail
jewellery brand P N Gadgil from Pune has
expanded its reach; opening a series of
stores across the country. Its newest store in
Pune is inspired by the Wada concept and
represents the latest wave in its evolution.
Offering a tightly edited selection of
jewellery, it caters to a sophisticated yet
casual, contemporary customer, says
Mayuri. Incorporating the Wada concept on
the exterior faade, the design team set the
tone with signature elements for the interiors.
Its boutique-like ambience, fresh mix of raw
and rened materials, custom-made pavilions
and commissioned artworks push the
retailers brand towards a new direction
and, at the same time, connects it closely to
a community.

Kalyani Guesthouse
This guesthouse is conceptualized as a home with opulent interiors. The designer has accented
the space by using traditional jaali work and a well-balanced colour palette of beige and brown.
The other ner nuances are the aesthetic use of cutworks and mirrors, ethnic accessories such
as accent chairs, consoles and dry owers. Being a guesthouse, we have provided sufcient
storage to accommodate the daily necessities of users. Though small in area, the kitchen has been
efciently designed to satisfy the needs of the clients, says Mayuri. The project was completed
within the stipulated time frame.
After this exceptional body of work, Shobha now aspires to design an amusement park.
With many projects in the pipeline, all we can do is just wait and watch.

FURNISHING SECRETS

METALLIC

MELANGE
ADD A TOUCH OF SHEEN AND
SOPHISTICATION TO YOUR PERSONAL
SPACE WITH SOFT FURNISHINGS IN
BOLD METALLIC COLOURS.
Text: Divya J Shekhar Photographs: Courtesy The Brands

home that does away with dated

decorations and pass style schemes
never fails to make a grand style
statement. With plethora of options
available in colours, patterns, fabrics and
themes in soft furnishing, we are often
confused while making the right choice.

To begin with you can start by moving

away from safe shades and conventional
styles. Instead opt for metallic colours
which are in vogue. Since these bold
metallic hues give your space the muchneeded glamour and exuberance.
While opting for metallic colours for
your bedspreads, curtains, cushions or
upholsterey, you need to be careful with
the right proportion. For starters, most
experts agree that the richness of metallic
shades like ruby reds, emerald greens,
silver, gold, bronze and brass, copper
browns, steely blues and greys, add an
instant amboyance to your space, so
overuse is a strict no-no. For instance, if
your soft furnishings are in metallic colours,
it is best to go easy on metal accessories.

8
Nirav Meswani, Director,
Surprise Home Linen, agrees,
Metallic colours add bling
and opulence to any interior
space, if used in the right
proportion. While using such
colours, one has to bear in
mind that going over-board
is a strict no. Too much bling
can be an eyesore. He adds
that while using metallic
colours, it is best to keep
other aspects of the room like
wall colours and accessories
neutral and simple. Otherwise,
there would be too many
design elements in one room,
all screaming for attention.

10

11

12

14

Secondly, customize the use of

metallic colours depending on the
mood you wish to create for your
space. Bhakti Hegde, Director,
Chartered Housing, believes that
metallic colours add energy to the
whole space because of their royal
texture. Consumers prefer metallic
colours as they are rich, vibrant and
bold. They instantly add personality to
the space and tend to create a very
informal and relaxing ambience.

13

Use of metallic shades can be decided

based on the type of rooms. Nikita Desai,
Lead Business Excellence, DDcor, says,
Living rooms can look bolder with velvety
metallic curtains, while pouffes or
arm-chairs with metallic upholstery
can make a luxurious style statement.
Bedrooms, on the other hand, have a
wider scope where decorative pillows
and shams, footrests beside the bed and
sheer on the windows can lend a very
personalized feel to the space.
She adds, Ofces can deck up their
waiting spaces with metallic tones, while
accents through upholstered chairs can
convey a bold attitude in the cabins.
Parushini Aggarwal, Owner and Creative
Director, Studio Creo, says that a bedroom
can be transformed into a luminous
paradise by using metallic furnishing.
Try mixing metallic hues with white and
black for a modern look. If classic is your
style, pair gold and silver with neutral tones
such as grey and beige.

15

16

18

17

20

19

Parushini adds that no matter how ne your soft

furnishings are, it is important to coordinate them with
other elements in the room. If you have used strong
metallic colours for your furnishings, you can tone down
the overall look of you room by opting for curtains in
neutral colours. Like, for curtains, choose an off-shade
version of your furnishing colour for a monochromatic
look. One can also add light-coloured decor vases,
lamps or chandeliers to coordinate the look.
Gold-coloured frames or other curios can be used to
further accessorize the space.

21

22

23

Vivek Gupta, Founder, The Big Door,

avers, Metallic accents go well with
distressed wooden furniture as well as
pure silver furniture. Pale wall colours
and earthy brown shades paired
with metallic accents and furnishings
create an impactful, yet soothing and
easy vibe. Nikita adds that lighting
also plays an important role. If metallic
colours dominate the room, it is best
to have dramatic lighting, whereas if
they are used as small accents, soft
lighting lends a sober yet stylish feel to
the area.

THE NEWLY-OPENED RESTAURANT CHINA GARDEN IN

DELHIS HISTORIC CONNAUGHT PLACE RESONATES SUBTLE
TRACES OF CHINESE INFLUENCE IN ITS ELEGANT INTERIORS.
Text: Ekatmata Sharma

RESTAURANT DESIGN

he 30-year-old chain of celebrated restaurants China Garden has opened its new outlet in
Connaught Place in Delhi. The restaurants design religiously follows its legacy of Chinese inuence
within the space. In a commercial space like Connaught Place, the two-storey Chinese speciality
restaurant boasts of a sprawling space covering an area of 5,500 sq. ft., with a seating capacity
of over a hundred guests. The ne dining restaurant is designed by KNS Architects who have
beautifully incorporated their signature style and new ideas by the owners.
Henry Wang, Joint Managing Director, China Garden, says, Considering the prime location
of the restaurant, we wanted the space to have a formal yet casual ambience to cater to the
surrounding ofces and families. We chose a neutral colour scheme, which is perfect for an all-day
dining restaurant and for the evening. We focused a lot on lighting so the ambience could be
easily converted to a formal setting. Two separate spaces are created with different
ambiencesthe main restaurant on the ground level and the lounge upstairs. While the main
restaurant is quite bright and airy, the lounge upstairs is very intimate and cosy, informs Henry.
The glass entrance door of the restaurant has Chinese proverbs embossed on it, while the
reception lobby is warm and inviting with exclusive Chinese teapots placed on the wall shelves and a
red King chair. Henry mentions them as signature elements of China Garden since decades.
Our patrons will surely nd the signature elements at this China Garden restaurant too. Firstly, and
most importantly our signature menu, then of-course our signature bamboo style restaurant chairs,
our red king lobby chair, which over the past 30 -years has become China Gardens signature chair.

It is used in our lobbies and of course the

Chinese tea pot collection,
informs Henry, who along with his
father Nelson Wang (Founder of China
Garden) and brother Edward Wang
have lent a personal touch to the
restaurants design. We love to get
totally involved; form the conception to
design process. We are very particular
about selection or placement of
artefacts, paintings, crockery, linen and
even furniture, almost everything has a
personal touch to it, adds Henry.
The spacious dining area is gracefully
designed, making the overall design
monochromatic. As this is the rst
all-day dining restaurant, a lot of
consideration was given to its all-day
nature. The colour palette includes
earthy tones and a lot of day light is
welcomed through the huge glass
windows, also offering a view of the
historic Connaught Place. says Henry.
The long sofas in the corners and the
chairs in the center placed around
circular tables exude a very plush and
luxurious sitting arrangement.
The wooden chairs have Chinese letters
scribbled on them and the main wall
has a Chinese proverb painted on it.
The Chinese writing on the wall is a
famous proverb that summarizes the
enjoyment of life through the avours of
food and beverages, says Henry.
The beige walls of the dining area
are adorned with small black and
white framed photographs by a
celebrated photographer displaying
Chinese culture and establishments.
The lighting is kept very subtle with
low-lying ceiling lamps and ceiling
LED lights. Henry concludes saying,
We have used lighting as aesthetics
and exibility to turn the space into an
intimate ambience by night.
In all, the restaurant emanates a true
Chinese treat for the senses.

ltimate luxury, perfect space planning and latest

technology are the criteria most people look for when
selecting their dream home. Keeping this requisite in mind,
Marvel Realtors has introduced premium lifestyle apartments
Marvel Kyra, another jewel added to Punes real estate crown.
Located in the famous Magarpatta Township, Marvel Kyra is in
close proximity to the airport, malls, multiplexes, hospitals, schools, IT parks and
other prime areas. Spread over 4.5 lakh sq. ft. area, the project comprises three
18-storey structures consisting of 4.5 to 5.5 BHK duplexes and penthouses.
Two dramatic sky boxes, which are the major highlights of this project, connect
the three towers. Commenting on the unique sky boxes, Vishwajeet Jhavar,
CEO, Marvel Realtors, says, The sky boxes literally create a home in the sky
feel. These sky boxes have a gymnasium, spa and restaurant.
The project is conceptualized and designed by Singapore-based
architectural rm HB Design, while the landscaping is done by
Ar. Thanapong Boonyasiriwat from Singapore-based landscape architects
and design consultants Ecoplan Asia. The unique faade of the towers
feature ns and ledges with a decorative tile nish. These elements are also
incorporated into the landscape design along with green walls. A water
stage and other sculptural features are also part of the outdoor spaces.

The faade has a

decorative tile nish.
Note the unique sky
boxes that create a
home in the sky feel.

The red and

yellow upholstered
furniture pieces add
amboyance to
the neutral colour
scheme of the living
room.

The wooden ooring

and indirect lighting
in the T V room makes
for a cosy ambience.

The spacious double-height entrance lobby is characterized by grandeur
and opulence. The expansive apartments face the north or the south for
unobstructed views and exceptional cross ventilation. One of the highlights of
the apartment is the double-height outdoor deck, which is landscaped and has
ower beds. The living room and bedrooms have a rened material palette with
imported marble ooring, POP or gypsum nish for the walls and ceilings,
VRV central air conditioning, and telephone and cable TV connections.

The pop of yellow

for the upholstery
adds vibrancy to this
area, where as the

geometric wall
paneling and rug use
rich colours.

The master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe

and the master bath has a jacuzzi and steam
room. All other bathrooms have separate
shower cubicles, solar heater connection,
designer ttings and sanitaryware.
The apartments have a modular kitchen with all
the appliances for modern-day cooking.
Marvel Kyra has state-of-the-art home
automation technology, where each apartment
has automated touch screen management
systems with personalized programming for
mood lighting. The developers have made
a conscious effort in following sustainable
practices, which includes the use of CFL lighting
xtures, rainwater harvesting and segregation
of organic waste among other things. Marvel
Kyra also provides amenities like swimming
pools, trellised barbeque decks, expansive
playground, tennis court, party lawn, ower
and herb gardens with pavilion, clubhouse and
concierge service, among others.
Lastly, absolute privacy and maximized views
are the hallmarks of living in Marvel Kyra.
The layout of the towers and staggered tower
positioning ensures that no two apartments
have any direct visual contact. In addition,
each apartment has a private access and
lift lobbies.
If Marvel Kyra has to be summed up in two
words, then its tagline Condentially Luxurious
ts the bill.

The storage shelves are

well-arranged to lend the
passage a clutter-free look.
Note the huge painting that
adds character to this space.

The leather headboard

adds an interesting touch
to the monochrome bed,
while the hues of yellow used
personalizes this bedroom.

MINIMALISTIC

BOLLYWOOD ACTRESS SONALI KULKARNIS

HOME IS CHARACTERIZED BY MINIMALIST
INTERIORS AND FREE-FLOWING SPACES.
Text: Priya Kamath Photographs: Courtesy Bbhupi

onali Kulkarni became a household name, especially with the song Who Ladki
Hai Kahan from the super hit movie Dil Chahta Hai. She has been appreciated
for her roles in movies like Singham and Taxi No 9211; and has also worked in a
number of hit Marathi and Gujarati movies. Apart from acting in movies, Sonali
has also been an editor with Viva, a supplement of the Marathi daily Loksatta and
her columns have been published in her book So Kul published by Rajahansa
Prakashan. The talented actress will soon star opposite actor Nana Patekar in
an upcoming movie titled Dr Prakash Baba Amte The Real Hero.
Sonali and her husband Nachiketh Pantvaidya, current head of
Sony Entertainment Television are the quintessential urban couple with a zest for
life, who also love inviting people to their sumptuous abode. The warm and inviting
home truly reects the couples personas. Located in suburban Mumbai, the
two-bedroom apartment showcases Sonalis real talent in putting all the right
design elements together harmoniously.
For Sonali family is as important as her career. Hence, in spite of being extremely
busy with her career, she found the time to design her cosy home. We moved
into this home three years ago. When my husband and I started designing
the home, we were very clear that we wanted a simple home that had open
spaces and a de-cluttered look. So we were very selective about furniture and
artefacts. She further adds, My home truly reects our simple lifestyle. I feel most
comfortable at home and I look forward to coming back home and spending
some quality time with my family.
The living-cum-dining area has white marble ooring and a white colour
scheme, except one wall that has been painted in an ochre shade. We opted
for a white colour palette as it makes the home look spacious, adds Sonali.
The living area with its minimal furniture pieces and vibrant upholstery catches
your attention. A sofa set, diwan, centre table and dining table are the only
furniture pieces in this area.

Sonali continues, The multi-purpose diwan in the living area has been specically
designed by me and Nachiketh. It has a pull-out option that doubles up as a bed,
which can be easily pulled out in case you want to relax. The sofa has been sourced by
Nachiketh. Red and green coloured cushions and a wooden centre table with a glass
top accentuate the sofa set. The four-seater dining area that faces a huge LCD unit has
a hanging light xture and a small bench on one side. Photographs of the family adorn
the walls of the home, giving the space a more personalized feel.
There is a small balcony outside the living area where Sonali has kept all her plants.
I call this space the hanging garden. Since I am not in favour of having indoor plants,
I have made sure; I have a balcony when I designed my home. I have planted a variety
of small plants here like Tulsi and other owering plants, adds Sonali. In the mornings Sonali
loves sitting near the balcony sipping a cup of coffee; while in the evenings, she loves
spending time here with her daughter. Both Sonali and Nachiketh being avid readers, one
thing you will nd throughout her home are books. I consider books to be the jewels of
my home. We have a huge book rack in the living area that has an amazing collection
of books. Also since my husband is into music you will nd instruments like tabla and the
tanpura in the living area. During his free time, he loves playing the tabla.
The master bedroom also follows a simple decor. All the furnitures in the master
bedroom have ample storage options. When asked what she loves most about her
bedroom, Sonali quickly points out to her dressing table. My dressing table has been
designed as per my requirement with a full-length mirror and storage space to keep
my essentials, says Sonali. The book rack in the bedroom gives a clear idea of the
couples love for reading. The space also displays all the accolades won by Sonali.
The other bedroom has been converted into a study where Sonali spends most of her
time. The space has wood look-alike ooring, a wooden study table, a book rack and
a wardrobe. Although the room follows a white palette, one wall done in orange lends
the space a bright look. Since, Sonali does her work here, the space has been provided
with ample light.
I havent invested more on accessories since I believe positive vibes and
warmth are more important in a home rather than artefacts, Sonali concludes.
The home with its simple decor is a true reection of the couples unpretentious and
composed personalities.

STORAGES
DE-CLUTTER YOUR HOME OFFICE &
WORK SPACES BY INCORPORATING
EFFICIENT STORAGE SOLUTIONS.
Text: Trisha Mahajan
Photographs: Courtesy The Brands

To

keep your home ofce and your workspace organized and clutterfree, you need to have efcient Storage Solutions. Storing things
systematically will save a lot of time in nding important documents,
papers, folders or les. Paper work and documentation cannot be
avoided. Even though the world is becoming paper-less and green,
we are still far from becoming a paper-less economy.
Storages will always be an integral part of any ofce space,
says Swapnil Nagarkar, Vice President B2B of Godrej Interio.

Some factors to keep in mind, while

purchasing storage units are height
and shape, which depends on the
use of the storage and the space
required for the same. In addition,
storages should offer maximum
usability as they are long-term
purchases. Also, going with the trend,
one likes to adapt modern designs
and contemporary patterns that are
visually-pleasing and contribute to
the aesthetics of the ofce.
Nomita Kohli, Owner and Proprietor
of Wisma Atria Interiors, adds,
Efcient storage options can
magically lighten workload.
An organized desk makes for an
organized mind. An organized ofce
in such a case accounts for number
of things; a bigger or smaller space
is not the main problem, the way
things are stored is crucial to business.
Lost les, mislaid folders, missing
ofce supplies can all add up to lost
revenue and low ofce morale.

There are several options available, depending on the kind

of storage and the things that need to be tucked away.
While banks or insurance companies require bulk of archival
storages to store customer documents; MNCs, on the other
hand, are not so heavy on papers and require smaller storage
solutions. Parushni Aggarwal, Owner and Creative Director,
Studio Creo, says, Many ofce storage options are available
such as in-built shelves, racks, bookcases, ling cabinets, roll
door cupboards and classroom storage units. For spaces that
have a exible layout, one can opt for racks, drawer units and
storage cabinets. They come in different sizes and styles to suit
your work space. In case of a small space, one can opt for
wall shelves, shelving units to maximize space as practically as
possible. Whatever ofce storage you go for, dont forget to
check all the little organizers like boxes, baskets or drop les that
will help in keeping everything organized. Also available are
archival systems, personal storages, wall-mounted storages, store
benches, lockers, standard storage cabinets, shelf assembled
storage cabinets, mobile storage cabinets and safes.

10

11

Before making a purchase

for your storage unit, the
important thing to consider
is the space available.
While larger businesses can
accommodate storage units
on the oor, smaller set-ups
can hang them on walls in
order to maximize space.
Mahesh Jain, Business Head,
Stellar Furniture and Lifestyle,
mentions, Floor-based units
are far better, as wall-hung
panel dividers do not go on
the oor and are missing about
3 ft. of the panel at the base
of the closet system, making
it uneasy to change the rod
sections. Owners of this kind
of system have limited exibility
if their needs change in
the future.

12

13

Another factor to consider

is the point of visibility as some
prefer to have closed units with
things stacked inside them,
while others prefer aunting
the les, documents and other
storage options. One can have
cabinets, which either show the
contents, conceal it away or are
a combination of the two. Sliding
and suspended door cabinets
need no extra space to open the
doors. Vertical tambour storage is
best for ofce spaces. Hinged door
cabinets and drawer cabinets
are other popular options; but
it totally depends on the kind of
work done. While lawyers prefer
bigger storage set-ups like a library
without doors; corporates prefer
closed units, says Sameer Hora,
Managing Director of IDUS.

14

15

16

17

18

19

After one has zeroed in

on the best suitable storage
unit, next comes the turn
for choosing the aesthetic
features. Ebony, laminated
with glass nish, oak, steel
and leather mostly act as
the main materials. Parushni
adds, Most storage options
produced these days are
created with wood veneer
and hardwood, which gives it
durability in addition to design.
Glass can be chosen to add
a dash of modernity and
transparency. Built-in lighting
systems in glass cabinets are
other preferred choices.

20

22

21

As far as choosing the right colour is

concerned, Swapnil mentions, Colours
play an important role in any ofce space.
Storages are no longer hidden areas of ofces.
With swoosh of colour options in storages;
they can make for an integrated aesthetic
looking ofce. Storages can also be put up
in highlighting colours to add to the beauty
quotient. While dark colours at times can
make the space look smaller and the overall
environment dull, lighter shades gives it an
expansive feel and exudes positive vibes.
Storage solutions are important because
they contribute to a clutter-free environment
and also a great pocket saver plan, when
used judiciously. Praveen Rao, President,
Dmart Exclusif, says, A growing enterprise
often has the need to hire more staff and
make room for them. The only option available
is to lease or rent a larger ofce, which is
indeed expensive. In such a scenario,
if efcient storage options are to be
considered, then they will not just save
space, but money too. When there are
storages available, everything will be at
right place and there will be more room for
employees and equipments.
It is important to have right storage system;
so make a careful and sensible decision.

hopping is not only about the products you purchase,

but also the overall experience. The ambience,
placement of products, well-informed staff; all contribute
to a wholesome shopping experience. Hyderabad-based
architect and interior designer Sona Reddy has created a
similar surreal experience for her store Room Therapy.
Sona Reddy, founder and creative head of Room Therapy,
has tried to create a space that customers can call they
own. Not everyone is fortunate to emulate grand design
styles in their homes. I believe that small changes and clever
accessorizing can make a big difference and create an
inspirational look. With my passion for design, travel and
food, I bring forth ideas for both outdoor and indoor home
decor, she says.
Room Therapy offers complete solutions for interior space.
Spread over an area of 3,000 sq. ft. the store, right from the
driveway, showcases a varied material palette that includes
stone, beaten metal, stainless steel, cast iron, driftwood,
mango wood and sheesham; all accentuated with rough
nishes. A massive blue painted metal door that leads you
into the store has a skillfully crafted door knob displaying the
shops logo. Needless to say, the door opens up to a lobby
that is characterized by a double-height ceiling and uses
hand-made tiles in blue and brown.

The simplistic style comes alive with the kitschy

accessories in wood and metal crafts. The statement
pieces include a metal mesh with hanging lights
that makes for an exquisite chandelier; seven blue
hanging lights in metallic hues (crafted at Sonas
workshop) above the cash counter; wooden rafters
and a cement slab. Huge glass windows let in ample
natural light, apart from giving a view of the plush
greenery outside. Some smooth wall surface display
a ight of ceramic birds.
The display area is kept open and de-cluttered
so that the store layout can be changed easily,
if necessary. In order to ensure that the layout
remains open, Sona has visually segregated
different sections. So the areas that have cement
ooring house dining furniture, beds, furnishings
and mirrors; while the central space with wooden
ooring displays various artefacts and other
furniture. Most of the display tables are made from
iron that gel well with the rest of the decor. Products
are also creatively displayed within exposed brick
niches or on hanging bars that give an illusion of
the product oating in air. Sona shares, I mostly
work with natural wood and use it without polish or,
rather, give it a rough polish. No one can replicate
ones work as they are usually site specic and
therefore, unique.
Two iron beams hold up the stairway made of wood
that leads to Sonas ofce and other display spaces.

The landing to the upper oor becomes display spaces for beautiful
mirrors, which also create an illusion of space.
Sonas cabin follows the same decor style with distressed
wooden tabletop, metal base chairs, abstract creations in metal
and wood. One of the spaces on this oor displays carpets. This
area is accessorized with blue glass chandeliers and owy fabrics
xed to the ceiling; giving it an Arabian Night feel. Tastefully
selected objects share the space with fashioned goods on a
console made of painted metal sheets. The design elements in
bold juxtaposition of contrasting colours and intriguing textures
highlight the vivid patterns.
Sona Reddys Room Therapy brings together the stark
contrasts of vibrant exuberance and warm earthiness;
nevertheless, an indulgent and inviting space.

informs the designers.
The lobby on rst oor makes way for diverse bays, displaying
different set-ups for the living, dining and bedroom areas. The last two
bays and a gallery act as the showrooms prive section, showcasing
limited edition designs. Moving ahead is House of Raros studio and
ofce space. The entire showroom has been designed keeping in
mind grandiosity and luxury. Rolly says, The store stands for lavishness.
It has been designed in a modern French art deco mood, where one
can see composites in each bay that speak about a particular style
and feel.
The store has been designed using a diverse material palette, which
includes exotic woods, veneers, leather and semi-precious stones.
Wood comes together to create a conceptual space, which literally
glows with promise and allure. Floorings have been kept neutral and
feature a wheat oak wooden surface, while the ceilings are basic
with a white POP nish. The entire store, in fact, has a monochromatic
colour scheme that is highlighted with rich brown or pastels.
