The 2014-2015 Justine LeBaron Young Artists Competition

Competition Rules 1. Applicants must be student instrumentalists or pianists, up to age 22, and currently residing in Hillsborough, Pasco or Pinellas County, or, if away at college, their high school parental home must be in one of these counties. 2013 First Place winners of this Competition must wait until the 2015-2016 Competition to apply, excepting that they may participate in a different category in this years Competition. 2. Applicants must submit an application form by mail, together with a non-refundable $35 application fee, to be postmarked no later than January 10, 2015 * N.B. extended to Jan. 12. 3. The competition will be held at the Gibbs Campus (5th Avenue) of St. Petersburg College on Saturday, February 7, 2015. Participants must provide their own accompanist (if applicable) and two copies of the piano accompaniment score for the judges. There will be no photocopier available at the college, nor do we condone photocopying of copyrighted music except if permitted for temporary usage. 4. There will be a Senior and a Junior Division, each with two categories, Piano and Instrumental. Senior Division (14 to 22 years old) selections will be a single movement of an orchestral concerto with readily available orchestral score and parts. Junior Division (under 14) selections may be any classical solo(s) of the applicants choice, i.e. two selections may be performed provided they do not exceed the time limit. 5. The selection(s) to be performed shall not exceed 15 minutes, and must be the selection(s) the student intends to perform if a winner. In the case of a single concerto movement being longer than 15 minutes, only a 15 minute or less portion thereof should be chosen for the audition/afternoon recital, but may be performed in its entirety for the concert in the case of Senior first place winners. 6. All contestants will be recognized and receive certificates of participation at the public afternoon ceremony/recital in the Music Center auditorium. First, second and third place winners will receive special recognition after which they will perform their winning selections. All judges' decisions will be final. 7. Senior division first place winners (piano and instrumental) will be invited to perform their winning selection as soloists at the next Benefit Concert of the Florida Orchestra Musicians Association. These soloists will be required to attend any necessary rehearsals prior to the concert performance. Invited winners must provide two high quality B/W photos (or high res jpegs), sized 2 x 2 inches, and a biography of not more than 400 words, by two months prior to the concert. 8. A student of a judge may participate providing said judge recuses him/herself from any judging of that students category. 9. Application and interpretation of the above rules shall be at the sole discretion of the Young Artists Competition Committee of the Florida Orchestra Musicians Association. If, in the sole opinion of the judges, the quality of performance in either category is not at a sufficiently high level, they may decide that no First Place winner nor performance opportunity for that category will be given.
