JamesIIofScotlandbannsthesportbecausehethoughtthatitinterferedwithmilitarytraining
1557,QueenMaryofScotsisknowntobethefirstfemalegolfer1860,thefirstBritishOpenis
played1888,St.AndrewsinYonkers,N.Y.isthefirstclubinhistory1894,theUSGolf
AssociationwasformedonDecember22.Thebestgolfersofthe1890serawere:HarryVardon,
YoungTomMorris,OldTomMorris,J.H.Taylor,andJamesBraid.Someofthefirstgolf
courseswereSt.Andrews,ScotlandTheChicagoGolfClub,Wheaton,IllinoisOakmont
CountryClub,Oakmont,PennsylvaniaandPinehurst,NorthCarolina.Thebestshotofthe19th
centurywashitbyYoungTomMorris,17,aceda166yardholeintheBritishopen.Someofthe
mostwellknowntournamentstodayaretheMasters,U.S.Open,TheOpenChampionship,and
PGAChampionship.
Therearemanywaystechnologyhascausedgolftochange.Oneofthesetechnologiesis
lawnmowers.Grazingsheepweretheonlyformofcoursemanagementforcenturies.However,

in1830,thefirstpatentforalawnmowerwenttoBritishengineerEdwinBeardBudding.For
thefirsttime,thegamewasabletomovefurtherinlandawayfromtheoceans.
Anotheroneofthesetechnologiesisdimples.AninventornamedWilliamTaylor
discoveredthatballscoveredwithdentsflyhigherandfurtherthanbrambleballswithbumps.
TheDymplcameonthescenein1905.Also,itwasfoundthattherubbercoreofagolfball
madetheballhavemorebounceofftheclubandwhichmadetheballgofurther.Lastly,when
theballsstartedtoevolve,theclubsdidtoo.Theclubsstartedoutassticksandthengraduatedto
makingthemoutofstrongermaterialssuchasmetalsandsteels.
Golfclubsplayedamajorroleintheevolutionofgolf.Theoldergolfclubsweremade
ofwoodwhichcouldeasilybreakandcausedtheplayersnottohititasfarandnotasaccurateas
aresulttheaveragescoresweremuchhigherthantheyaretoday.Whenmetalclubscameout
peoplestartedtohititfartherandstraighterthanwiththewoodenclubstheyusedto.Thenew
metalclubsprovidedasmootherandcrisperfeelfortheplayer.

Theyallowedplayerstoworkontheirgameindoorssotheydon'thavetoworryaboutweather.
Itcantrackwhereplayershittheballmostconsistentlyandhelpplayersseewhatisneededtofix
anyproblemswiththeirshots.
Golfaffectstheeconomyinmanyways.Itprovidesalotofjobsandisamilliondollar
businessthroughouttheyear.Forexample,thePGAprofessionalsthatgivegolflessons,the
maintenancecrews,peoplethatareinchargeoftheclubhouses,thepeoplethatforgeandmake
golfclubsetc.

Golfhasalsoaffectedcultureinmanyways.Theprofessionalssetgoodexamplesforthe
childrentodogoodwhennooneislookingandalsotorespectotherpeopleandwhattheperson
isdoing.
OnthePGAtour,agolferisonlyallowed14clubswithhimwhilehe'splaying.A
normalpersonhasadriver,3wood,4&5wood69irons,pitchingwedge,gapwedge,sand
wedge,andlobwedge,andofcourseaputter.
Tobeasuccessfulgolferyouhavetopractice,practice,practice.Someevengoto
instructorstolearnfromthemandseewhatiswrongwiththeirswingorposture.
Myprojectisongolf,averyoldandtraditionalsportthathastournamentswhereplayers
canwinmoney.Golfwasandstillisevolvingintothegreatestsportofalltime.
