Dear Mr. Wright:
Tam writing in response to your October 29, 2012 letter, on behalf of Intersal, Inc., requesting the
renewal of the September 1, 1998 Memorandum of Agreement (“Agreement”) between Intersal, Inc.,
Marine Research Institute, Inc. (“MRI”), and the Department of Cultural Resources (“Department”).
Since taking office five months ago, I have taken the opportunity to learn about the Queen Anne's
Revenge shipwreck and the vital role Intersal and MRI played in its discovery and recovery. I have
also devoted much thought to how the Department can best serve the people of the State of North
Carolina through the current economic challenges and those that lay ahead. After carefully reviewing
‘the Agreement and weighing its benefits against the current and future needs of the Department, I have
concluded that it is not in the Department's best interests to renew the Agreement.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Intersal for its dedication to the Queen Anne's Revenge
shipwreck project over the last 15 years. Although the Agreement will soon come to an end, I hope
that Intersal and the Department will continue to work together to educate others about this State's
tremendous archaeological resources. I wish Intersal the best of success in its future endeavors.
