What would be the thermodynamic capability of the engines at sea level, assuming
‘SHP/(PaVTa) is the same at cruise and take-off?
Which version would you suppor’? Discuss the improvements offered compared to the
existing -300.
Make a very quick estimate of the required increase in fuselage length.

2, The McDonnell-Douglas MD-11, designed for long haul routes, is based on a stretch of
the DC-10-30; details of both are given below. Typical passenger accommodation on the
MD-11 is 289 (37 Business, 252 Economy) and 262 (34 Business, 228 Economy) on the
DC-10-30.
It is proposed to develop a derivative aircraft based on a reduced TOW and twin engines.
The engines available have a static take-off thrust of 75,000 lb and a cruise s.f.c. of 0.57
bfhr.lb at M 0.82 and 35,000 ft. Carry out preliminary estimates to predict the range and
Payload of the proposed aircraft. Also estimate the values of V, and V approach.
‘You can assume that a 10 ft. long fuselage section weighs 15,000 Ib, the weight of engine
plus structure removed is 15,000 Ib and the DC-10-30 wing can be used.
What aircraft must this proposal compete with?
