16.3 Solar Activity Study Guide
1) Find a picture of the suns layers online. Cite the source full URL.
Copy/Paste the sun below.

rs-of-the-sun-diagram.html
2) Explain the following properties or characteristics of the sun:
a. Core: the innermost layer, with a density of 160 g/cm^3
b. Radiative Zone: light produced by nuclear fusion in the core travels
out in to the radiative zone
c. Convective Zone: the heat from the edge of the radiative zone rises
until it cools, and this happens in the convection zone
d. Photosphere: the deepest layer of the sun
e. Chromosphere: the layer of the sun between 250 miles and 1300 miles
above the solar surface
f. Corona: the outermost layer in the sun
3) How do sunspots work? Find a picture, copy/paste it here and cite the
source.

http://www.redorbit.com/news/space/1031949/do_sunspots_bring_rain/
Sunspots are dark areas that pop up regularly on the surface of the sun.
Some small sunspots may last for less than an hour, but larger ones can
last up to six months.
4) What is a prominence? How does this differ from a flare? Find a picture,
copy/paste it here and cite the source.

http://www.windows2universe.org/sun/images/prominence_earth_size_compare_big
_jpg_image.html
a prominence is a loop of gas and plasma in the Suns atmosphere. It differs
from a flare because a flare is a magnetic storm which appears to be a very
bright spot and gaseous surface eruption
5) How does an aurora work? Find a picture, copy/paste it here and cite the
source.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climateweather/atmospheric/question471.htm
Auroras occur when highly charged electrons from the solar wind interact
with elements in the earths atmosphere.
