Information Literacy (IL)

Introduction to the Training

Introduction
This training aims at familiarizing
participants with the available electronic
resources at UDSM
It forms part of Information Literacy
training programme offered to students
and staff at UDSM library at the beginning
of every semester

Information literacy
IL involves knowing about the following:

When we need information

Why we need information
Where to find it
How to evaluate it
How to use and communicate it
How to use and communicate it ethically

Implications of IL
In order to be information literate, a person
requires an understanding of:

A need for information

Resources available
How to find information
The need to evaluate results
How to work with or exploit results
Ethics and responsibility of use
How to communicate or share findings
How to manage findings

This kind of training already exist!

As a library user education programme
As part of library instructions programme
As part of library orientation week
programme

But the problem

Some of these programmes do not reach the
target audiences
Lack of interest:
I know about computers should someone teach me
about Internet & its resources?
My course makes little use of e-resources
I have no time to go for such course programmes
Etc

Teaching methods may not be appropriate with

target audiences

Hence the aim of this training

To introduce participants to the full
range of electronic journals and
scholarly databases available online
To demonstrate the range of
electronic resources availablein
particular those in use at UDSM

Aims continued
To provide hands-on experience on using
and accessing the range of electronic
resources available
Eventually to promote the use of these
resources to others on campus
To become information literates!
