How does the new ‘Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) approach’ differ
from the conventional ‘look-like’ or ‘work-like’ prototype - based product
design approach, being adopted at every phases of product development
process in most mechanical industries, in general?

A high pressure crude oil pipeline is subjected to transverse loading due to the
oil pressure p along its length /. Consider a thin section element with thickness
1 in the loaded area, as shown in Figure 1.1, is subjected to plane strain, and if
oz is 1400 MPa, and o, is — 100 MPa, determine the value of stress a; along
the axial direction of the pipe parallel to the oil flow. Take E = 200 GPa and
v=0.3 for the pipe steel.

Figure 2.1 shows a part of a system of multiple rigid carts on a horizontal
plane that are interconnected by a system of linear elastic springs. If the
stiffness of the spring s; is 100N/mm and the load applied at cart j is 100N,
when cart i is fixed firmly with the support column, then determine the
following by using finite element method through force-equilibrium approach,

(b) A thin ring, made up of an isotropic material with two of its material
properties - Young’s modulus as £ and Poisson's ratio as v, is press fitted on a
shaft, and is subjected to an in-plane loading p on its inner edge surface as
shown in Figure 3.1, Develop stress-strain relationship for the plane stress

Figure 4.1 shows a spring system that comprises four linear springs s), $2, $3
and sy with stiffness ky, ka, ks and ky respectively. If 5), 52, ds and dy are
extensions of the four springs due to forces F) and F3 acting in such a manner
as shown in the figure, explain how the principle of minimum potential energy
forms the basis for determining the displacements qi, q2 and qs of nodes 1, 2
and 3 of this three degrees of freedom spring system to be in equilibrium.
