Unit 4 Week 4
Test Date: Tuesday, February 3, 2015
Test Date:
Comprehension Strategy: Summarize
-To check for understanding of plot events and
characters, summarize the story as you read.
-Summarizing is restating briefly, in your own words,
the most important ideas or event in a selection.
-You may use key details to find main ideas and
summarize. Recall the information in your own words
and in a logical order without judgments or your own
opinions.
-Even if the story is told in verse form, you can
summarize the most important events to help you
understand the plot.
-For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook pages
183-184. Also refer to The RWW book page 284.

Genre: Free-Verse Fiction

The following are key characteristics of free-verse
fiction:
-It is a story told in verse form. It includes
characters, setting, and plot. It is organized like a
poem, with lines and stanzas rather than
paragraphs. Unlike many poems, free-verse fiction
has no rhyme and meter.
-It may include interior monologues, the
characters' inner conversations, thoughts, or
emotions, sometimes presented in an irregular
way.
-Dialogue in free-verse fiction may be shown
differently. It may be shown with dashes, italics,
and different fonts.
- For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook page
186. Also refer to The RWW book page 286.

Vocabulary Strategy: Homographs

-Homographs are words that are spelled alike but
have different meanings.
Examples: inclined, steer, shot
-For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook
page 187. Also refer to The RWW book p. 287 and
the Word Study Center.

Comprehension Skill: Theme

-The theme of a text is a statement or insight about life that the

author wants you to understand. Some examples are: True

friends are hard to find; Honesty is the best policy.
-Theme in free-verse fiction is suggested through key details.
-How characters feel about situations, events, and about other
characters can provide clues to the author's message about life.
-Understanding what causes a character to feel a certain way can
help you determine the theme.
-For extra practice, refer to Practice Workbook pages 183-185.
Also refer to The RWW book page 285.
