EMTIntermediatesarethosewhotakeanintermediatetrainingwhichallowsthemtoadminister
intravenousfluidswhichareoftencalledspecialtypharmaceuticals.EMTIntermediatesalsoare
responsibleforusingmanualdefibrillators,andadvancedairwaytechniquesincaseofa
respiratoryemergency.EMTParamedicisthehighestlevelofparamedicEMT.Thesepeopleare
veryimportantinthecaseofmedicalemergencybecausetheyhaveauthorizationtocovera

largepartofprehospitalcare.Meaningtheycantheycanadministerdrugsorallyor
intravenously(throughthevein),readelectrocardiograms(Ekgs),andperformendotracheal
intubationswhichistheplacementofaflexibleplastictubeinthetracheatokeeptheairway
openandhelpstoadministercertaindrugs.
AhighschooldiplomaandBasicEMTtrainingareneededinordertobeginacareerasanEMT.
BasicEMTtrainingisusuallyofferedatmostcommunitycolleges,thistakesaboutthreemonths
tocomplete.Certificationsneedtoberenewedeverytwoyears.TobecomealicensedParamedic
youarerequiredtocompleteaIntermediateEMTParamedictraining.Aftertakingandpassing
theNREMTtestorstateexaminationyoumaybelicensed.
