Brainstorm:
This Science Fair journal should begin with these questions:
- What am I interested in?
- What questions do I want to know the answer to?
- What problems do I see in the world/home/school that I think need to be solved?
From your answers you should have a better idea of what you could possibly study for science fair. Do you
want to create a recycling or composting program for the school? Do you want to design a remote control
finder for your grandmother who always loses it? Are you interested in genetic inheritance? Are you
interested in plant growth or organic urban farming? Do you want to survey people about the amount of
time they spend on Facebook vs. doing homework? Do you want to challenge the lunch program and its
limited options?

With your detailed experimental procedure in hand, you are almost ready
to start your science experiment. But before you begin there are still a few
more things to do:

Analysis:
State the Results
1. State ALL the results of the experiment (1 paragraph)
For each result state a supporting fact(s) from the data.
For example: All coke cans with sugar sank in water. Classic Coke and Caffeine-Free coke have
sugar and they sank. All cans with Nutra-sweet floated. Diet coke and Caffeine-free diet coke have
nutra-sweet and they floated. Caffeine made no difference in whether cokes sank or floated.
Caffeine-free coke sank, but Diet Caffeine-free coke floated.

Explain the Results
2. EXPLAIN each result
Use the right resources to explain the results. Use the background
information from your research, notes taken in class, etc...
Choose 3 facts from your research sources and notes (pages 11-13).
Explain how they better helped you understand the experiment.
Research Fact
Conclusion
Summarize what you learned.
A. Restate in a few sentences the main results and your explanation of the results (the
answer to your original Question)
B. Hypothesis correct or not? A simple statement of fact.
a. (My hypothesis was supported by my data.Explain OR My hypothesis was not
supported by my data. Explain)
C. What did you learn from this experiment Make a statement about what you discovered
D. What additional question would you want to investigate further? Describe what
additional experiment would you like to do to answer a related question.
Conclusion
TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER
Describe how the main idea of this experiment applies to understanding other areas of
science or use other concepts in science to discuss the results of this experiment. You
will probably need to do some extra research here.
OR
Instead, you may relate the subject of this lab to a personal experience in your life. How
does what you learned from this lab help explain that experience?

Oral Presentation
The final step in the science fair is developing your oral presentation.
You should practice your presentation so that it goes smoothly in the classroom.
Expect to talk for approximately 5 minutes.
It helps to have note cards or a small sheet of paper to speak from, so that you do
not have to turn around to read from the board.
What to say in your Oral Presentation:
1.
2.
3.
4.
4. Mention anything that the listener may not know about the topic.
Procedure:
Variables:
Independent:
Dependent:
Controlled:
Analysis:
Conclusion:
7. Explain your exhibit materials such as models, plants etc. Demonstrate if appropriate.
*Make a flash card for each of these 10 points with what you are going to say, so you can
practice your presentation!
