FROM THE TECH DIRECTOR

Training Its No Longer a

State of Mind; Its a Habit!

ast January I wrote an article

called Training Its a State
of Mind. In it, I articulated the
reasoning behind the thought process
that so many of us go through regarding training.
Lets face it: Not everyones excited about training. And no wonder:
You get home from a long days work,
hands hurt, back sore, hungry, and
in need of a shower. But wait, lookie
there, homework! Just what you were
hoping for!
We realize theres much more than
just being tired when you come home.
Theres family, friends, weekend trips,
first day of fishing, hunting, or summer.
These are also very important.
So we decided a couple things
were going to happen last year and we
worked very hard to make them happen. First, we created a way to bring the
training to you, on your terms. Second,
we made it available if you missed it.
Heres what we did
As we finished up 2014, we
expanded and generated more technical material for our industry than ever
before. We inundated the industry with
articles, bulletins, webinars, training
through T&C, seminars, Expo, video
presentations, books, and specialized
training seminars.
We scheduled 20 webinars last year
and were scheduling 20 more for 2015.
Seal Aftermarket Product, TransTec,
and ETE sponsored our webinars last
year. Their support is generally why
those webinars dont cost you a cent.
Our seminar book for 2015 will
be over 270 pages of up-to-date fixes
and includes some of the latest factory
training. Its this type of information
that keeps you in the game and gets
those vehicles out the door.
You may have also noticed an
additional issue of GEARS at your shop
2

1fm tech dir115.indd 2

this year. Thats right, another first for

ATRA: ten issues of GEARS. My guys
and several outside authors kicked it
into high gear last year and we have
more on the way for this year.
If you went to the 2014 Expo, you
may have seen the ATRA Expo app.
Wow, what a cool tool to have during
the seminars and on the show floor!
Its available for downloaded for the
Android, Windows, or Apple smartphones. This was our first app, but not
our last: We have others in the works.
These apps will make your job easier
and allow you to be more efficient in
the shop.
Were also collaborating with AVI
(Automotive Video Inc) out of Florida,
a company that produces training videos for the auto repair industry. We just
completed the 722.9 rebuild training
video; look for it soon! Were planning
five videos for 2015 to complement our
rebuild books.
We had 18 speakers for the 2014
Expo. And, if you were there, youll no
doubt agree that this was, by far, one of
the best shows ever! It was easily one
of the best lineups weve ever had.
We had three hands-on shows
on Thursday: Bill Brayton and John
Parmenter were tearing transmissions
down for hands-on research. Bob
Warnke did a presentation with John
Parmenter that showed off vacuum testing. We filmed the show and broadcast
it on the big screen. If youd like to get
a taste of what you missed, check out

Here in the Technical department,
we use an inter-departmental chat system between Tech and membership.
This allows us to make sure shops are

up to date and make modifications if

needed. Our technical database continues to be the best way to report on the
most common failures, which we use
for bulletins, quick fixes, Expo presentations, and our seminar book.
One of the most dramatic changes is from the Knowledgebase (KB)
searches performed. The Search bar we
installed at the end of 2013 has been the
easiest way to find bulletins and information from the repair center.
In January of 2013, we launched
our new testing and certification
program. Since then, weve had about
10 masters certifications completed,
and over 250 other certifications in the
Diagnostician, Rebuilders, and Chassis
technician programs.
How can you start to take advantage of all this training? Its easy!
Consider our online webinars: There
are about 275 shops that sit in on those
webinars every two weeks. That works
out to about 1000 attendees. We have
about 3500 attendees at our annual
seminars and over 600 attendees in our
technical sessions at the annual EXPO.
You can be one of those too all it
takes is desire.
They say if you do something
consistently it becomes a habit. Some
habits, like smoking, are a bad thing;
they cost you money and wreck your
health. But a habit isnt automatically
a problem that you have to eliminate.
Some habits can be valuable assets.
Those are the ones you want to nurture
and develop.
So start off 2015 by embracing
a new habit: Take training out of the
things you think about doing and turn
it into something that you just automatically do. Its the best way to keep
yourself sharp and up to date for the
road ahead.

Not Just Another CVT

LET'S PLAY BALL

Just Another

pair of new transmissions

were introduced in the 2014
Chevrolet Spark (C Body):
The CVT-7 and 1ET35. Well take a
look at the details of each of them.
The CVT-7 (RPO M4M) is manufactured by Jatco Corporation (known
as a model APO by Jatco) and its also
used in some Nissan models (JF015E).
Unlike most other CVTs on the market,
the CVT-7 is a two-step unit, designed
to provide improvements in fuel economy and performance when compared to
a conventional CVT.
The gear ratio of the CVT is
expanded with an auxiliary gearbox,
which is a planetary gearset attached to
the output pulley. The two forward gear
ratios are 1.821:1 and 1.000:1 and the

1Lance tech 115.indd 4

reverse gear ratio is 1.714:1.

The two-step gear ratio is controlled by the addition of the auxiliary
portion of the transmission. This allows
for using smaller pulleys, reducing the
overall length by 10% and the weight
by 13%. The new pulley size allows
the pulleys and belt to be repositioned
in the case, reducing friction loss by
30% because the oil isnt being agitated
as much.
A dedicated transmission controller
sits under the drivers side of the dash,
near the brake pedal. Like other TCMs,
it must be programmed if replaced.
The inputs to the controller are
carried on the CAN data bus (engine

RPM, torque, load, ABS, etc.) Sensors

include:
engine
primary, secondary, and output
speeds
line pressure
transmission oil temperature
and an inhibitor switch. Outputs
include pressure control and engine
torque request via CAN.

Fluid Level and Type

The transmission has a stand pipe

for checking fluid level; theres no dipstick even though it has a dipstick tube.
The dipstick tube provides a fill point
for the transmission.
Check the fluid level at 122F
(50C) with the engine running, in park,

on level ground. Remove the

stand pipe plug and look for ATF
to drip from the stand pipe:
If nothing comes out, youll
need to add fluid.
If fluid rushes out, the unit
is overfilled: Allow the
excess fluid to drain.
When the fluid level is correct the fluid should drip
from the stand pipe.
The fluid is CVTF I Green
Fluid, GM part number 19260800.
Fluid capacity is 6.21 qts (5.88L).

Line Pressure

This unit doesnt have a

pressure tap. The only way to
check line pressure is with a scan
tool. Normal line pressure: 1.2L
engine 72.5 PSI at idle; 652-725
PSI at stall. 1.0L engine 72.5 PSI
at idle; 620-693 PSI at stall.

Pulleys

Each pulley consists of one

fixed sheave and one moveable sheave.
The pressure applied to the primary and
secondary pulley pistons determines
the ratio and torque capacity by varying the size of the two pulleys. Pulley
size and the ratio available from the
auxiliary gear box planetary system
determine the over-operational 7.3 ratio
spread (figure 1).
6

1Lance tech 115.indd 6

Figure 2

Clutches and Brakes

One drive clutch and two brake

clutches are used. The low brake and
high clutch apply in D and M ranges
and are controlled based on the gear
ratio required. The reverse brake only
applies in reverse.

Oil Pump

The CVT-7 uses an off-axis, chaindriven, vane-style pump.

Auxiliary Gear Box

The gear box consists of a planetary gearset, and the high, low, and
reverse clutches/brakes.

Reduction Gearset
(Counter Gears)

Like other transmissions, the reduction gearset transmits power from the
transmission section to the final drive.
The counter gear ratio varies depending
on the engine. The 1.0L engine uses a
1.178:1 ratio while the 1.2L engine uses
a 0.967:1 ratio. Both applications use a
3.882:1 final drive ratio.

Valve Body, Solenoids,

Sensors, and Valves

The valves, solenoids, and sensors

used by the CVT-7 include (figure 2
and 3):
Control Valve: Controls oil pressure from the pump to feed the
rest of the valve body and control
systems
Pressure Regulator: Controls line
pressure
Torque Converter Regulator:
Controls the pressure within the
torque converter
Torque Converter Clutch Control
Valve: Controls the pressure to
the TCC solenoid
Pilot Valve: Controls pressure
feeding each solenoid
High Clutch/Reverse Brake
Switching Valve: Controls when
pressure goes to the high clutch or
reverse brake
Manual Valve: Determines gear
range based on shifter position
Primary Pressure Control Valve:
Controls pressure to the primary
pulley to control primary pulley
operation

Primary Solenoid: Controls the

primary pressure control valve
(N/H solenoid)
Low Brake Solenoid: Controls the
operation of the Low Brake (N/L
solenoid)
High Clutch and Reverse Brake
Solenoid: Controls the operation
of the high clutch and reverse
brake. (N/H solenoid)
TCC Solenoid: Controls the TCC
control valve (N/L solenoid)
Line Pressure Solenoid: Controls
the pressure regulator valve (N/H
solenoid)
Fluid Temp Sensor: A thermistor that creates a signal based on
transmission fluid temperature

Secondary Pressure Sensor: A

variable pressure sensor that creates a signal based on the pressure
applied to the secondary pulley
piston
High Clutch Oil Pressure Switch:
Signals whether oil pressure is
being fed to the high clutch

ROM

The CVT-7 uses a ROM (Read

Only Memory) box mounted to the
valve body area. It stores baseline calibration comparative data for the solenoids and can only be replaced with the
valve body assembly.

Adaptive Learning Reset

Like other transmissions, the

CVT-7 uses adaptive learning to
improve transmission operation. The
reset process synchronizes the transmission ROM to the TCM calibration.
Youll need to reset the adaptive learning values during any of these conditions:
TCM was replaced or reprogrammed
Internal repairs that could affect
transmission operation
Transmission was replaced
To reset the adapts, use a scan tool
and select the Transmission Adaptive
Pressure Reset function. This process
will take about 10 seconds (figure 4).
Another transmission available for
the Chevrolet Spark (C Body) is known
as the 1ET35 (RPO MME). Its an electric drive transmission.
The 1ET35 is a fully automatic, front wheel drive, variable-speed,
electronically-controlled transmission.
It consists of one 85kW, 360-volt,
3-phase electric drive motor; one planetary/differential gearset; an internal
10

1Lance tech 115.indd 10

Figure 5

mode switch (IMS); a temperature sensor; a high-voltage electric auxiliary

fluid pump; and the housing (figure 5).
The hydraulic system uses an electric auxiliary fluid pump motor assembly located inside the transmission for
cooling and lubricating rotating components. This system consists of a gerotortype pump; an electric, 3 -phase, 360volt, high voltage pump motor; a wiring
harness; and a control module.
The control module is located
under the hood, inside the drive motor
generator power inverter module. The
transmission fluid pump operates under
low pressure and will only run when the
transmission is out of park or neutral
and the module detects vehicle speed.
The drive motor is a permanent
magnet, 85 kW peak-power AC motor,
and is controlled by the power inverter
module. Drive motor speed is controlled
and monitored by a resolver-type position sensor (like the 2ML70). The drive
motor generator power inverter module
monitors the angular position, speed,
and direction of the drive motor based
on the signals from the position sensor

to the drive motor generator power inverter

module.
The drive motor
position sensor, or
resolver, contains a
drive coil, two driven
coils, and an irregularly
shaped metallic rotor.
The
metallic
rotor is mechanically
attached to the shaft
of the drive motor
generator. When the
vehicle is on, the drive
motor generator power
inverter module outputs a 5 VAC, 10 kHz
excitation signal to the
drive coil. The drive
coil excitation signal
creates a magnetic
field surrounding the
two driven coils and
the irregularly shaped
rotor.
The drive motor
generator power inverter module then monitors the two driven coil
circuits for a return signal. The position
of the irregular shaped metallic rotor
causes the magnetically-induced return
signals of the driven coils to vary in
size and shape. A comparison of the
two driven coils signals allows the
motor control module to determine the
exact angle, speed, and direction of the
drive motor.

Fluid

The 1ET35 uses Dexron VI HP,

GM part number 19300536. The fluid
capacity is 4.4 qts (4.2L).
Lately it seems as though theres
a new transmission being introduced
every day. But a careful examination of
the details shows that these new transmission arent all that different than
those youve already seen. Once you
identify the details, the rest isnt all that
difficult to understand or repair.

y now, most of you have run into

the Jatco Continuously Variable
Transmission, or CVT. Getting
the parts is becoming less of a problem,
and bearings, solenoids, and stepper
motors are now available.
The Jatco CVT comes in many
different makes and models and it
isnt going anywhere soon. So, if you
havent already started, nows the time
to learn to rebuild this unit.
In this article were going to go
over a few of the issues with the Jatco
CVT including the wear areas to look
for to rebuild this transmission successfully.

Engine Stalls on
Engagement

A car comes into your shop. The

customer says the engine stalls when
you put the transmission in gear. A
code scan reveals that it sometimes
stores code P0744 in memory (TCC
solenoid or valve function).

To keep it simple,
the lockup solenoids
have multiple
functions to control
engagement feel and
lockup operation.

Before performing
any further
diagnosis, always
verify the complaint
and check fluid level
and condition.
(TCM) detects irregular values
with slip rotation speeds.
Theres a big difference between
engine speed and primary speed
when TCM lockup signal is on.
The code definition states that
P0744 can be caused by an open or
shorted wire to the lockup select solenoid valve or a mechanical failure,
such as the control valve sticking or
improper solenoid operation. But problems arent limited exclusively to these
areas.
Before performing any further
diagnosis, always verify the complaint
and check fluid level and condition.
And check scan data to make sure the
range switch and speed sensor are operating correctly.
A major trap when diagnosing this
condition is that the scan data can be
wrong. Some scan tools have shown
fluid temperatures around 100F (about
55C) higher than it actually is. Always
try a different scan tool to confirm your
readings.
A second trap is when you put the
transmission in gear: The TCC control
solenoid and lockup select solenoid
will change states on engagement. This
is normal and isnt causing the engine
to stall.
The TCC control solenoid controls
the lockup control valves and also regulates forward and reverse engagements.
The lockup select switch solenoid
controls the select switch valve, which
diverts fluid between the lockup and
select control valves. To keep it simple, the lockup solenoids have multiple
functions to control engagement feel
and lockup operation.
Heres where you need to look for
a problem:
Solenoids (figure 1)

Checking the Solenoids

The lockup select switch solenoid

should have 15 to 30 ohms resistance

and should operate around half an amp

to one amp. This is a normally-closed,
on/off style solenoid.
The TCC control solenoid should
have 3 to 9 ohms resistance and should
operate around one amp. This is a normally-closed, pulse width modulated
solenoid.

Figure 5

Checking the Valve Body

Check the lockup control valve

and sleeve (figure 2, pg. 14). This is
where most problems occur. The sleeve
tends to wear and the valve sticks in
the sleeve. There are aftermarket solutions available to replace this valve and
sleeve.
The TCC regulator valve is also
is a high wear bore (figure 3, pg. 14).
If this valve is worn, it causes torque
converter clutch to lock up too quickly
and may also cause the converter clutch
to slip or not lock up.
Check the select switch valve for
nicks, burrs, or worn areas. See if the
valve strokes all the way in and out of
18

1jarad115chg1.indd 18

the bore freely.

Assuming the converter and oil
circuits are working properly, checking
these valves and solenoids will usually
reveal the source of the engine stalling
on engagement.

Regulation Issues

The pump in this transmission can

produce up to 1000 PSI. The job of the
pressure regulator valves is to lower
pressure to a usable range for each
circuit. This is where this transmission
operates a little differently than most
other transmissions.
The line pressure regulator valve
provides supply pressure to the ratio
control valve, secondary valve, and

downstream for clutch regulation.

Circuit pressures for the primary and
secondary pulleys range from 72 to
870 PSI.
The clutch pressure regulator valve
provides the supply pressure necessary
for the forward and reverse clutches,
and downstream for TCC regulation.
The circuit pressures for the forward
and reverse clutches range from 15 to
218 PSI.
The TCC regulator valve provides
supply pressure necessary for the TCC
and lube/cooler circuits. Circuit pressures range from 0.0 to 145 PSI.
The solenoid regulator valves job
is to provide supply pressure to the
solenoids to operate the transmission.

The Jatco JF011E

uses a
high-pressure,
dual-working,
vane-style pump.
See figure 6.
In the middle valve body, you can
vacuum test the solenoid regulator,
clutch regulator, and the lockup control
sleeve for wear (figure 4, pg. 16).
In the lower valve body, you can
vacuum test the TCC regulator, secondary regulator, and the main regulator
valve for wear (figure 5, pg. 18).
Remember, when vacuum testing,
keep a log of your test results so you
become familiar with whats normal
versus whats not. There are aftermarket repair kits for most of these valve
bores.

The Pump

The Jatco JF011E uses a high-pressure, dual-working, vane-style pump

(figure 6). The filter is connected directly into the suction side of the pump.
As the chain drives the pump, it
draws fluid in on each side of the rotor.
The high pressure fluid runs out the
other side of the pump through two
ports into a combined chamber. From
there, oil pressure is routed to the flow
control and pressure regulator valves.

A good visual
inspection of the
valve and its bore
will usually reveal
any signs of wear.
To change ratio, the stepper motor
moves the ratio control valve. The ratio
control valve controls oil flow to each
pulley. Large volumes of oil are needed
to change the ratio; the greater the ratio
change the more oil needed to move
the pulley.
Why is this important? Keeping
this transmission running properly is all
about volume and pressure. The job of
the flow control valve is to control oil
volume when needed.
When the pulleys change position, the pressure and volume of oil
increases; if the flow control valve isnt
working correctly, the pressure and volume will be low.
The flow control valve has pump
pressure on one end. When theres
enough force on the valve, it opens,
exhausting oil to the suction side. When
the ratio changes and volume is need,
the valve closes and directs more oil to
the pulleys.
You can vacuum test the flow
valve and bore by applying a test plate
to the filter inlet port and plugging off
the other port (figure 7). A good visual
inspection of the valve and its bore will
usually reveal any signs of wear.
When working on the Jatco CVT,
always remember that there are a few
traps in the temperature sensor reading
on some scan tools, and the TCC control and lockup select solenoids change
states on engagement.
Pay attention to the wear in regulation valve bores and the pump flow
control valve.
This transmission is different than
most others, but with a little understanding of common wear areas and
how its controlled, you can rebuild it
with confidence.

This new, 8-speed, automatic
rear wheel drive transmission, with its
squashed torque converter and onepiece, die-cast aluminum case with an
integral bellhousing, was developed in

is eight pounds lighter with the same
overall size as its 6-speed predecessor,
allowing it to t in the same space.
Its new overall ratio changes will
place the new Corvette Stingray into

the EPA-certied, 30-mile-per-gallon

(MPG) highway fuel efciency rating
category. The earlier 2014 Stingray
equipped with a 6L80 transmission has
an EPA rating of 16 MPG in the city
and 28 MPG on the highway, with a
combined rating of 20 MPG. The 8L90
improves the Stingrays efciency up to
5% versus the 6L80, with a steeper rst
gear ratio to improve launch capability.
The transmission controller executes commands at 160 times per
second, providing wide-open-throttle
upshifts up to 0.08 seconds faster than
the Porsche 911 equipped with a Direct
Shift Transmission (DCT).

One of the main

reasons the 8L90 is
much lighter is the
use of magnesium
castings for the
clutch pistons and
valve body.

capable of handling an estimated 635

Built in the GM Toledo, Ohio
plant, the 8L90 will also become
available in the Cadillac and other rearwheel-drive models as an upgrade;
for now the 6L80 transmission is the
standard option. This transmissions

2014, was delayed during the global
economic recession for one year and
replaced with the Aisin TL-80SN eight

The 8L90 is equipped with four,
close-coupled planetary gearsets, two

located in front of the geartrain
to minimize the oil feed distance
(figure 3).

The
258-millimeter
torque
converter is based on the 6-speed
transmission, modified to use an
off-axis fluid pump. This moves the
pump away from the center of the
bellhousing, where it was on the 6L80
transmission. The 8L90s pump is
located lower in the case, inside the
valve body (figure 4).
The new, small, magnesium,
binary, vane-type pump has two inlets

with one discharge per revolution,

which serves as two pumps in one small
space. It supplies a high flow rate when
the demand is needed by recirculating
the oil through half the pump at a time.
This reduces pump pressure loss and
improves efficiency.
One of the main reasons the 8L90
is much lighter is the use of magnesium
castings for the clutch pistons and
valve body.

The 2-3-4-6-8 and 4-5-6-7-8-R

clutch drums have the same type blind
spline as the 6L80 transmission (figures
5 and 6). In addition, the solenoid
identification and strategy is similar to
what Ford is doing with the 6R140W,
also known as the Torqueshift 6.
A part unique number (PUN) is
located on the valve body and solenoids
and a transmission unique number
(TUN) is located on the case (figure 7).

unique performance characteristic data,
which is stored in the transmission
control module (TCM) as part of
the TIS2 Web Service Programming
System (SPS).
If you change the transmission,
valve body, solenoids, or TCM during
a repair, the unique performance
characteristic data must be downloaded
from the web server and reprogrammed
into the TCM for the system to function
at maximum efciency.
You can reprogram the solenoid
characterization using capable laptop
software to access the TIS2Web Service
Reprogramming System. You can also
reprogram the solenoid characterization
to refresh the unique performance
characteristic data in the TCM.Heres
how:
Document the new part unique
number (PUN) or the transmission
unique number (TUN) as required.
Log into the TIS2Web/SPS web
site and enter the vehicle identication
number (VIN).
Select transmission control module
programming.
Select the applicable service
procedure and provide the TUN or
PUN required.
The system will read the VIN
from the ECM using GMs Multiple
Diagnostic Interface (MDI) and then
retrieve the applicable data tree through
the internet. The data tree accesses the
original characterization data so it can
be updated with the new component
information.
The
system
acquires
the
characterization data for the new
PUN/TUN and updates the genealogy
tree. It then updates the TCM with
the correct solenoid characterization
data and updates the web with the new
genealogy strategy.
Thats about all for now. So stay
tuned because you can be sure that
youll see future articles, bulletins, and
seminar information on this new GM
8L90 transmission in the months ahead.

ealing with solenoid electrical

problems sometimes can be
confusing, especially when you
read the possible causes on the factory
diagnostic tree.
For example, on a code P0755 for
a 545RFE, which is described as a 2C
solenoid circuit, the possible causes are
said to be one of these conditions:
2C solenoid control short to
other circuits
2C solenoid control circuit open
2C solenoid short to ground
Transmission solenoid assembly
Power control module (PCM)
The diagnostic procedure provided
isnt very helpful.
Lets simplify things a little. With
this in mind, Ive redrawn the solenoid

RY1 Transmission Control Relay

Figure 1

When you turn the ignition on or

start the engine, the PCM provides
voltage to the transmission control
relay through pin 18. The transmission
control relay, represented by RY1 in
the drawing, is grounded to the body;
this causes the relay to close, which, in
turn, provides system voltage to all of
the solenoids.
Then the PCM runs a solenoid
integrity test by grounding each shift

solenoid. If all the solenoids circuit

tests are approved, the PCM will
keep the transmission control relay
energized; from there itll run the
integrity test periodically.
If the test fails on any of the
solenoids, the PCM will de-energize
the transmission control relay, which
cuts off the supply voltage to the
shift solenoids and puts the vehicle in
failsafe mode.

Simplifying Solenoid Electrical Codes

Lets apply this information to a

2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4x2 with a
545RFE and code P0755. This truck
was brought in after the technician
replaced the solenoid pack and the
code persisted.
Since this is an electrical
code, youll want to check both
the voltage supply and ground at
the same time. By backprobing the
solenoid in question, in this case
solenoid 2C at the PCM connector
C4 pin 6, and backprobing any other
two solenoids on the solenoid pack
for reference, in this case solenoids
OD and 4C, you can begin the test
Channel 1 (yellow trace) shows the 2C solenoid control
at C4 connector pin 6; channel 2 (green trace) shows the 4C
solenoid at pin 2; and channel 3 (light blue trace) is the OD
solenoid at pin 1.
The scope is grounded to the battery to provide a good
ground source. Figure 2 shows the signal zoomed out 16x to
reveal the whole 16 seconds.

Lets take a closer look using

a one-to-one scale (figure 3). At
cursor 1, both the OD solenoid (light
blue trace) and the 4C solenoid
(green trace) passed the integrity
test, since both dropped to 0.54V
when grounded. But the 2C solenoid
failed the integrity test since the
voltage never dropped; it remained
at 12.29V.
This test proved there were no
open circuits on the 2C solenoid
circuit from the C4 connector to the
transmission control relay, because
system voltage was there when the
relay closed.
And there was a good ground at the PCM because
the solenoids that did pass the integrity test dropped to
0.54V (540mV). That leaves only the driver inside the
PCM, represented by the S4 on the drawing, as never
switching closed.
We replaced the PCM, reprogrammed the Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN) and ran the test again (figure 4);
this time all three solenoids passed the integrity test. Cursor
1 shows the 2C solenoid integrity test and cursor 2 during the
OD and 4C solenoid integrity test.

If the test fails on any of

the solenoids, the PCM will
de-energize the transmission
control relay, which cuts off
the supply voltage to the shift
solenoids and puts the vehicle
in failsafe mode.

Figure 2

Ignition turns on at about two seconds; the engine started

at cursor 1 and you can see the PCM run three integrity
tests on the solenoids before it finally went in failsafe mode
because solenoid 2C failed to pull to ground.

Figure 3

As you can see, this test procedure can help you

diagnose future solenoid electrical codes easily and without
the confusion of the manufacturers diagnostic tree.

ave you ever seen a front

drum blown apart like this
(figure 1)? I hadnt either
until recently.
This transmission had been rebuilt
twice at two different shops before
it showed up at shop number three.
Thats when I got involved with it.
The vehicle was a 2003 Dodge
Ram 3500 5.9 diesel. It had been
chipped, which had nothing to do

34

1brown115.indd 34

with the transmission, other than

putting more power behind it.
When the truck showed up at
shop three, it had no 3rd or reverse.
The front drum was blown apart, but
everything else in the transmission
looked good. A nice, easy fix, right?
Not so much: It blew the drum
apart again while it was still on the lift!
That type of failure indicated the
problem wasnt due to horsepower or

torque, so, after replacing the drum for

the second time, I asked the technician
to put a gauge on it before shifting
through the gears.
Wow! The transmission built up
200 PSI at idle, and rose over 320 PSI
at stall. Not bad if it were a TH400
with a Trans brake. But on a 48RE it
was a recipe for disaster.
The pressure at the accumulator
tap should only be 50-60 PSI
GEARS January/February 2015

1/8/15 8:20 AM

This was missing

Figure 2

(3.454.12 Bar) at idle and 95-100

PSI (6.556.90 Bar) max at stall. That
excessive pressure is what blew the
drum apart.
Since there had been at least two
other sets of hands on this unit, we
decided not to try any further valve
body modifications; instead, he ordered
a new valve body right from the dealer.
With the new valve body installed,
the pressure came right down to where
it should be. And, even with the added
horsepower, the transmission worked
terrific. In fact, the owner came
back to the shop to tell them that the
transmission had never worked better!
Once we had the trans fixed, I sent
a call tag to get the old valve body so I
could check it out and figure out what
was wrong with it.
When the valve body showed up
at ATRA, I tore it down to see what
had been done to it. No one had done
anything in the way of updates or
repairs. It was just plain worn out.
And this was one of the worst
valve bodies Id ever seen. Every bore
was worn out. It had a replacement
manual valve and pressure regulator
valve in it. No repairs whatsoever, no
holes drilled, no springs replaced.
So what was wrong with it? For
starters the pressure regulator valve
was severely worn out, compound that
with a missing boost valve plug and
your recipe was complete (figure 2).
Thats what allowed the pressure to go
so high.
Next I decided to perform a
vacuum test to see what kind of wear
we were dealing with. And there was
plenty of wear to go around: Only one

valve in the entire valve body actually

passed the vacuum test.
Even with a new, aftermarket
pressure regulator valve installed,
the bore was so bad it failed the
vacuum test.
One governor plug wouldnt hold
any vacuum at all (figure 3) and the
other only held about 6 of vacuum. I
installed a governor bore plug kit just
to see if itd make any difference. Not
much: One bore still wouldnt pass the

vacuum test.
Obviously no one in any of
the previous shops had performed a
vacuum test on this valve body. If they
had, theyd never have reinstalled it.
Theyd have known right away that
they needed to replace it.
So, if youre not vacuum testing
your valve bodies, you really should
start. Just because you install a repair
or replace a valve doesnt mean its
fixed. In fact, in some cases like

this one! all the repairs in the

world wouldnt have compensated for
the wear.
This valve body was just flat
worn out and needed to be replaced.
Sometimes theres no fixing a valve
body; your only choice is to replace it.
And thats not just smart thats

thought as generations. So far, weve

identified three.
Now we believe we've entered
a fourth generation. The important
thing to keep in mind is that, with each
generation, we moved from one to the
next because of a need or problem.
That is, we found ourselves with a
problem that the existing practices
couldnt address, so we had to discover
an approach that could get us back into
business growth.
Before we discuss the makeup of

GENERATION I:
THE PIONEERS

Automatic transmissions started

becoming popular in the early 1940s.
The pioneers of that generation set out
fix those new-fangled contraptions and
formed an industry. The automatic

automotive professionals, so the people
that could fix them were sought out.

star ted in 2006 with one
pur pose: to examine what
successful shops were doing and then
share those success methods with the
rest of the industry.
One thing we discovered is that
most of the improvement in business
has less to do with tactics; rather, it
comes from a change in thinking.
Every meaningful change that weve
observed has been preceded with a
revelation in business thinking.
Over the years weve studied
businesses and consumers in a range
of surveys and focus groups to help
shape our approach. Weve even
studied demographics the location
of businesses to see if there
were city characteristics that either
benefited or detracted from business
success. There werent.
That was an important discovery
because it meant people couldnt
blame the city they were in for their
lack of business. Sure, there may be a
couple of outliers, like Detroit, but for
the most part the city didnt matter.
As the Whats Working study took
shape, we began to characterize the
various phases or business modes of

Generation IV, lets revisit the first

three generations to make sure we
have a firm grasp on their evolution.
Well also examine the challenges that
came about for each generation and
how the industry faced them.

Generation IV: The Next Step in Business Thinking

T he key to succeed i ng i n
Generation I was simply the ability to
fix the transmission. One challenge
was finding technical information and
practical repair techniques to get the
job done. Another was finding parts.
The dissemination of technical
infor mation is what led to the
formation of ATRA in 1954. It was
shops helping other shops by sharing
information. As information became
more available and the parts supply
chain grew, so did the industry.
The business model was pretty
simple: Get known as the shop
that could fix transmissions and
the business would come to you.
Throughout the 50s and 60s, this
business plan worked pretty well.
But there was a threat on the
horizon: With technical information
and parts so readily available, it became
easier to fix automatic transmissions.
Shops began popping up left and
right. Shops that made their livelihood
from a steady flow of referrals all of
a sudden had competition. And they
werent prepared for it.
As mechanics they were more

40

whats working115 v2.indd 40

than capable of fixing transmissions,

but running a competitive business
was another story. They knew only
one way to deal with it: compete on
price. As Generation I was coming to
a close, those businesses could fix the
car, but they werent making money.

shop and the industry exploded.

Many consider this the heyday of the
transmission repair industry.
Generation II stretched from
around 1975 to the late 90s.

GENERATION II:
LEARNING TO SELL

Generation III began in the midto late-90s. As with all generations,

there was no finite date, and the
threat that caused the change sort of
sneaked up on everyone.
In this case, the transmission
industry was humming along until two
things emerged: the internet and reman
transmissions. Now the customer was
armed with knowledge (not always
right, but that didnt matter) and they
had more choices. These two entities
were fairly minor in the early 90s, but
grew in scope as time went on.
By the early 2000s, no one could
escape the fact that consumers could
buy a transmission from a range of
sources and they could learn the price
of the transmission without going
through the RDI process. I remember
having conversations with shop

With so many new shops popping

up, including the pressures from
newly-formed franchises, it became a
challenge to make a profit, even if the
bays were full.
Around the early 70s, shop
owners began learning more about
running a business. ATRA began
offering business and sales training.
Ter r y G reen hut, the man who
practically single-handedly steered
this industry into a business-thinking
entity, showed people how to sell at
a profit.
Terry was the associate executive
director for ATRA back then, and
taught thousands of shop owners how
to be profitable. This was a major leap
forward in running a transmission

GENERATION III:
CREATING A CUSTOMER

owners saying I know how to sell

and I can fix the transmission. But the
phone isnt ringing!
The winning ticket was to let
people know you cared about their
automotive problems that fixing
their transmission was more than just
another sale. This lead to ATRAs
Whats Working study: It consisted of
a range of surveys and focus groups,
all targeted at what customers were
looking for when it came to getting
their car fixed and what successful
shops we re doi ng t o a dd re ss
their needs.
As shops around the country were
reporting better sales and business
growth, little did we know that the
next crisis was right around the corner.
And, like every other problem thats
emerged in the past, this one snuck
up on everyone until it couldnt be
ignored. The problem? Finding good
help to get the work done.

GENERATION IV:
GETTING IT OUT THE DOOR

Talk to shop owners around the

country and the question is the same:

Where can I find a good builder?

Often, the owner had the same builder
for years and now its time for them
to retire.
The last time they had to look
for a builder was the mid-90s when
all they had to do place an ad in their
local newspaper and in a couple days
theyd have several prospects. Today
thats a distant memory.
To make matters worse, the
transmission industry as a whole has
been reluctant to embrace on-going
training and employee development
and retention.
The expectation is that, when a
prospect comes through the door, they
should be fully capable of building
todays high-tech transmissions. That,
too, is less and less likely. So the pool
of prospects is not only smaller, but its
constituents are less capable, too.
Todays challenge is having a
team of highly skilled and motivated
employees that are eager and capable
of delivering the quality service youve
staked your reputation on. And, unlike
moving from Generation I to II and
then III, it wont happen overnight;

thisll take an investment in time.

S o u n d s d i f f ic u lt , b u t n o t
impossible. To begin, we have to
ask the right questions. Instead of
where can I find a good builder?
lets ask how can we attract talented
people to our industry? What can
you, as a shop owner, do to cultivate
the next generation of talent for
your business?
Thats the next challenge for
the transmission industry and your
trade association, ATRA. As Im
writing this, weve already begun our
next study: to understand what the
younger generation is looking for in
an employer and what those who are
venturing into automotive repair are
looking for in a career.
Well also examine what we, as an
industry, can do to improve our image
to start attracting this new talent. Its a
challenge, sure, but its one that were
happy to accept.
Welcome to Generation IV.

Ten Reasons
Why the SBA
May Decline
Your Buyers Loan
T

he SBA, or Small Business Administration, is a government

agency thats tasked with helping provide small businesses
with financial support to get off the ground or expand. In many
cases they provide distinct advantages over an industrial bank,
either financially or through relaxed loan requirements.
But before you get the idea that the SBA is just another
name for Santa Claus, think again: The SBA doesnt give out
any presents. Their loan application process isnt quick and
it requires heavy documentation. An application needs to be
prepared carefully, and the buyer needs to be ready to address all
the details theyll require.
Failure to document the application properly wont just
cause delays, it may cause the loan to be denied. As a seller,
youll want to make sure your buyer is prepared and meets
the minimum qualifications and requirements for an SBA
loan approval.
1. Management experience in auto repair In assessing
an application, the SBA will look at whether the applicant
has industry management experience in the type of business
being acquired; in this case, running an automotive repair
shop. If the buyer has extensive management experience but
not in the auto repair business, the loan may be denied.
2. Demonstrate positive cash flow The loan application
needs to include a business plan that shows the buyers cash
flow projection for his business, the price, and the terms
of the deal. Absent unusual circumstances, the buyers
cash flow will be expected to mirror the sellers cash flow.
The SBA will only make a loan to an applicant who can
persuasively show that the business will have a positive cash
flow. If the business hasnt achieved a positive cash flow, the
SBA probably wont want to risk it.
3. Down payment The SBA program requires the buyer
to make a capital investment to buy the business. When
filling out the SBA loan application, the buyer must submit
a personal financial statement. Because the SBA wont
approve a zero-down loan, this document needs to show
how much of a down payment the buyer is providing and
where itll come from.
4. Buyer must have working capital The business
plan and financial cash flow models provided to the SBA
specifically need to show working capital for the buyer, and
where that working capital will come from.
5. Buyer must have 700 minimum credit score The SBA
requires that the buyer have a minimum credit score of 700.
Obviously the higher the score the better. Part of the review

and approval process for the loan will include checking the
buyers tax returns, credit report, and resume. These will
need to be up to date and consistent with each other.
6. Lease the length of the SBA loan If the business
requires a lease, the SBA loan application needs to show that
the landlord has approved a lease for the buyer thats at least
the length of the loan. So if the SBA loan is for 10 years, the
term of the lease must also be at least 10 years.
7. Clean background The SBA will check the applicant for
a criminal record. If youve had a drunk driving offense and
it goes back a few years, theyll require a full explanation so
they can determine whether they want to underwrite the loan
or not. And they can only approve loans to US citizens or
documented legal aliens.
8. Financial statements less than 90 days old When a
business is listed for sale it can often be six months or more
before a buyer comes along. The SBA requires business
financial statements to be no more than 90 days old. So the
seller needs to keep financial statements completely up to
date if an SBA loan is part of the purchase.
9. Consultant agreement with seller less than a year If
the buyers offer requires the seller to remain as a consultant,
the term of the consulting agreement cant exceed 12 months.
10. Lenders exposure isnt maxed out in the industry
There are many banks that offer loans and service providers
that process and underwrite loans. Many lenders manage a
book of loans, often based on a mix of industries they know
and have researched to help reduce and manage their risk.
If a lender already has too many loans exposed to a
particular industry or has decided to avoid loans in a particular
industry, that lender may decline the buyer's loan even though
another lender might be willing to consider it.
If youre trying to buy an auto repair shop, you may need
to consider applying to the SBA. In some cases the SBA can
be dramatically easier to work with than an industrial bank. But
the SBA is no picnic: Youll have to meet serious requirements
to prove that you have the potential to be successful at least,
successful enough to pay them back!
But if youre having trouble being accepted by the regular,
industrial banks, you might want to consider the SBA. Just
approach them the way you would an industrial bank. If you
meet their requirements, you could become one of the small
businesses that owes at least a part of its success to the SBA.

Wheat Ridge (www.cottmanofwheatridge.com).

History

As with many franchise owners,

Jim isnt a technician. He found the
Cottman franchise through an offer for
a business opportunity.
Im an engineer by trade, says
Jim. I have a Masters in mechanical
engineering. I did mechanical design
for about 5 years, designing turbines
and pumps. After that I went into pneumatics and air regulation. One of my
48

jobs was to design a CO2 carbonator

for Coke!
Later, working with a trucking
company, I helped design an air-assisted transmission shifting system, Jim
went on. And then I helped design a
medical breathing apparatus to help
prepare patients for surgery.
Jim was on the board of one company when a new chairman began
replacing board members. I saw the
writing on the wall so I started looking
for something new to do.
I examined a number of different
possibilities, and then I came across
an ad for a Cottman franchise. And I
thought, When times are good, customers will fix a transmission to be able
to pass the car on to their kids; when
times are bad theyll fix the transmission rather than buy a new car. So I
made the decision and bought my first
Cottman center.
Jim bought his Denver shop in
September, 2003; he bought the Wheat
Ridge shop in 2009. And hes been
doing very well almost since opening
his doors.

Business Model

When Jim bought his first shop,

he was excited to focus exclusively
on transmissions and powertrain. His
reason? He wanted to cultivate his
wholesale business.
If youre doing general repair,
your wholesale customers might be
hesitant to send their customers to
you, explains Jim. They might be
afraid that their customers would be
so happy with the transmission work
you did that theyll ask you to do other
repairs. Thats why I decided to remain
exclusively a transmission shop.
Our business is about 60% to
70% wholesale. Well do work for
fleet businesses, mom-and-pop gas stations, repair chain stores, other garages.
When they send us a car, if we find
a brake problem or worn belts, well
write it up and give it to them to sell to
their customer.
Other times well get customers
calling us to ask for repairs that arent
transmission related. For them, we have
a list of shops we can refer them to.
According to Jim, one of the reasons theyre so popular with their customers is they have no problem letting

them know when they dont need a

transmission. As much as 40% of the
time we find that the cars dont need a
new transmission, including cars from
fleets that have their own garages.
Before they began using us,
every transmission problem seemed to
involve a new transmission. But were
finding that up to 40% of the time
theres really nothing wrong with the
transmission itself. Maybe itll be a
clogged catalytic converter or a crank
sensor or a mass airflow sensor.
Even if its just a couple solenoids
that are bad, if the fluid isnt terrible,
why not just replace the solenoids?

Sure, there could be some wear in the

transmission, but no one can identify
that without taking it apart.
Theyll explain the situation to the
customer and give the customer the
opportunity to decide whether to take
the chance with the repair or go for a
rebuild. In many cases the customer
is happy to take a shot at avoiding the
larger repair bill.
Its about treating the customer
the way wed like to be treated. We try
to be as honest as we can, and weve
found our customers appreciate that.
We have a car dealer wholl buy
a car at auction with a bad transmission

and then bring it to us. Im not sure

thats the best strategy for buying cars,
but we sure appreciate his business!
Jim is quick to recognize that, no
matter how good your shop is, sometimes you make mistakes. Its how
you handle those mistakes that matters. For them, a comeback goes to
the front of the line. Customers dont
want to wait when theyve already paid
for work, and they shouldnt have to,
says Jim.

Outside Sales

A big part of wholesale transmission repairs is bringing customers in.

For that you need an outside sales
program. To help keep his shop busy,
Jim spends a good part of his week on
the road. I dont spend my day sitting
in my office waiting for the phone to
ring. Im out there on the road, going to
50

1shop profile115 v2.indd 50

shops, selling them on using us for their

transmission repairs.
I walk in the door and say, Hi,
my names Jim, heres what we do and
heres what we can do for you. If you
have something thats working, Im not
here to try to take that away from you.
But if youre having an issue, Id love
for you to give us a try.
It may take six, ten, twenty visits you may never get some. But if
youre not out there selling your shop,
someone else is, and theyre going to
get the business.
You cant just approach outside
sales when things are slow; you have
to do it when things are crazy, too. It
has to be a regular thing. People have
to learn that they can depend on you,
and you do that by making sure they see
you on a regular basis. Its not easy, but
its important.

Giving Back

We hear a lot about how many

of the more successful shop owners
try to give back to their communities.
Some sponsor car shows, some try to
help consumers who are less fortunate.
But Jims the first shop owner weve
talked to who picks corn to help his
community!
One year Jim and his wife helped
pick a field of corn for the Food Bank
of the Rockies. It was great to fill up
a semi full of corn to feed the areas
hungry, says Jim. Opportunities to
serve abound; a favorite is Extreme
Community Makeover. ECM focuses on underprivileged neighborhoods

throughout Denver. With homeowners

and renters, ECM volunteers complete
one day projects to improve or maintain
the exteriors of their homes. My family
and I have been blessed to participate.
We have mowed lawns, rototilled a
garden plot, painted a house, trimmed
trees, and cleaned up a trash pile as high
as the top of my head!
Im one of the youth leaders at
Gods Grace Community Church. We
try to schedule an event about once a
month. Ive been part of this church
group for the last 18 years or so, but
Ive been working with youth groups
like this since I was 25.
Theres another group downtown I work with called Open Door
Youth Gang Alternative; its run by
Reverend Kelly to help at-risk kids in
elementary school. We help with their
Christmas party and some of the events
they have in the summer.
The first Monday of every month
theres an event at the Gathering Place;
a facility for women whove been in
abusive situations or are homeless.
They come for the day and they can
get resumes written, work on art projects, get meals or a shower whatever
they need.
Our church hosts bingo for them
and provides gift cards as little prizes,
Its fun for everyone and I enjoy it
when I have the chance to help out.
Why is all this community support
so important to Jim? Ive been given a
lot in life and I just feel its important to
give back to my community.
Does doing all this for the commuGEARS January/February 2015

nity help his business? Thats not why

I do it, says Jim. Most of the people
I work with are lucky just to have food
and clothing; they dont have cars.
Maybe the word gets out, but thats not
what its about. Business is going well
enough that I can choose how to spend
my time, and thats how I choose to
spend it.
How does Jim have time to do all
that and run two shops? Ill credit that
to my center managers, Mark Andersen
and Scott Cooper. Both of them do a
great job of serving our customers and
taking care of the business. And that
gives me the time to do the things in our
community that I want to do.

Life with ATRA

As a Cottman dealer, being an

ATRA Member is fairly new for Jim
and his staff. And they couldnt be
happier with it. They make it a point
to attend the ATRA tech seminar each
year when it comes into their area.
This year he brought the bulk of
his staff to Expo in Las Vegas to
attend the seminar programs. This
years Expo was fantastic! he says.
His technicians attended the technical seminars and Jim and his managers attended the management program,
beginning late Friday and through the
rest of the weekend.
Im seriously thinking about closing my shop next year and bringing out
my entire staff for the whole program,
because we really could have used
the information that we missed on
Thursday and Friday morning.
GEARS January/February 2015

Of course, ATRA isnt just about

Expo and the seminars, and Jim and
his staff are thrilled to be able to
take advantage of the benefits of being
ATRA Members. The HotLine has
been a terrific resource for our technicians, says Jim. And we use ATRA
OnLine all the time.
His technicians have all been taking part in the online webinar training
programs, and at least one of his technicians is studying to become ATRA
certified.
Theres no doubt in Jims mind
that joining ATRA was one of the best
decisions that the Cottman home office
has ever made for its franchisees.

The relationships I have with my community the relationships I have with

my neighbors the relationships I have
with my family those are what feed
me. Those are what keep me happy
those are what keep me going those
are what keep me in a good place. After
that, everything else is gravy.
From the sound of things, its
working well for Jim. And its a terrific
example for the rest of us. All we can
say is thanks, Jim: Were proud to have
you as an ATRA Member!

Jims Philosophy

Heres what Jim had to say when

asked about his business philosophy:
Life for me is about relationships.

Company Profile
Whatever It Takes (WIT) was
founded in 1999 by Kenny
Hester, a 30 plus year veteran
in the Transmission parts
supply business. WIT is the
complete source for all its
customers transmission parts
needs, whether it is new, used, or remanufactured. Parts
are currently distributed by 29 branch locations
throughout the U.S. With the main remanufacturing and
distribution located within 10 minutes of U.P.S. major Air
Hub, Whatever It Takes is able to quickly ship parts
worldwide. The majority of the sales staff have been in
the business for over 20 years. WIT is an employee owned,
customer driven company, there are no stockholders or
investors to report to. As owners, the WIT employees only
job is to provide the customer with the things they need
to be the most successful shop possible.

Customer Service
Customer Service is the cornerstone that W.I.T. was
founded on, and has helped it become a major competitor
in the transmission parts business. Whatever It Takes
prides itself on its excellent customer service and having
the parts you need by maintaining a minimum fill rate of
98.8%. W.I.T. prides itself on taking care of its customers.
Service, Experience, Quality, Product Availability, Timely
Credits, a dedicated Customer Service line are just a few of
the reasons why Whatever It Takes has become a major
competitor in the transmission parts business. WIT is able
to ship its parts overnight to most of the North and South
Eastern U.S. With its strategically placed stores, it is
possible for WIT to service about 80 % of the country
within 2 days. In addition to using UPS & Fed-Ex to ship its
packages Whatever It Takes also offers free Night-Box
delivery to many areas. By
making this commitment, WIT
helps to increase its customers
profit margin. With Night-Box
delivery, Builders no longer have
to wait around for UPS or FedEx
to arrive; their package is
delivered overnight so the parts
are waiting on them the next
morning.

POWER INDUSTRY NEWS

POWERTRAIN INDUSTRY NEWS

Steve Navarro

April 27, 1953 December 2, 2014

Were saddened to report the
passing of Steve Navarro, owner and
operator of Steves Transmissions in
Oxnard, CA. Steve was 61 years old.
Hes survived by his wife Sheila, his
son Stevie, and daughter Rachel.
Steve got his start in the automotive
industry right out of high school,
working in a gas station with his older
brother, Morey. In 1972, he went to
work at a local AAMCO Center where
he learned how to diagnose and repair
automatic transmissions. Thats where
he got to know ATRA CEO Dennis
Madden, who was working at the time
for AAMCOs technical department.
Steve was a guy you couldnt help
but like, says Dennis. I got to know
him some 30 years ago, back when I
was doing shop visits for AAMCO.
He was working at an AAMCO back
then and Id make it a point to stop by
whenever I came to the area.
He was one of those guys youd
see from across the room and youd
have to go over to see what was going
on with him. Just a terrific guy and he
will be missed.
Steve opened his first shop with
another technician, a shop they
operated for several years until the
partnership dissolved. He then opened
Steves Transmissions about 18 years
ago, and continued to work there until
his passing.
His son, Stevie, followed in his
fathers footsteps, learning the trade
and taking a leadership role in the
business. Today Stevie continues to run
the business his father started.
He was honest and he was there
for everyone, says Stevie. He was
quick to take care of customers, even
if they didnt have enough money to
cover the bill. He was the first to greet
people with open arms.
ATRA Technical Specialist Bill
Brayton was a longtime friend of
Steves. According to Bill, Steve was
a great friend to ATRAs home office.
He was quick to let us use any car
that came through his doors to gather
technical information or research, and

many of the cars and parts that have

appeared in GEARS over the years
came from his shop.
One of Steves great joys in life was
his dogs; he had a Golden Retriever
named Bartholomew (named after
Bart Simpson!), and two Yellow Labs
named Hailey and Peanut. I think
there are more pictures of him with his
dogs than there are with me and my
sister! says Stevie.
Steve will be remembered as a
good husband, a good father, and a
good friend to ATRA and the entire
transmission industry.

by our Indianapolis, Chicago, and
Grand Rapids, Michigan, locations,
said Kevin Powell, JASPER national
operations manager. We found a
need to open a branch in South Bend
because it will allow us to better serve
our customers in that market with more
days of service, earlier deliveries, and
faster core pickups.
I am excited for the opportunity
to offer the increased customer service
and the additional delivery days for
our northern Indiana and southern
Michigan customers, said Mike Smith,
JASPER regional vice president.
The South Bend branch gives
JASPER a total of 43 branch locations
throughout the United States.
