How to manufacture

runs without hitting

homeruns!!!
BE AGGRESSIVE ON THE BASES, BREAK DOWN THE DEFENSE, AND DO
YOUR JOB AT THE PLATE!!!

Base running

Practice it daily!!!

Hustle(you never know) especially fly balls!!! Be aggressive (always

trying to figure out how to get to next base) especially on dirty balls.

Get leads with a purpose!!! No more rock step lead, sprinter start.

Take extra bases on walks or singles when middles vacate 2nd, and on
throws to cut instead of base.

Know how to run bases on balls to outfielders!!! Always scoring on a

base hit to outfield from 2nd! So practiceknowing where your outfield
is, knowtheir arms (as the coach, watch them during warm-ups)!

Baserunning Cont.

The slower the runner the better lead they better get. Look for the lazy
2nd basemen not covering, so you can get an even bigger lead at
second! If a good catcher then try to draw throws with your good base
runners to delay steal or draw throws so lead runner can advance.

Practice base running or don't hold your kids accountable for

making mistakes, encourage pushing it in practice so they learn
what they can and can't pull off!!!

Reward hustle- taking extra bases, going 1st to 3rd on base hit,
etc.

DRILLS

1. 4 groups at a base doing base running. Have middle infielders and

outfielders (have defense move up and back so runners can adjust)

1st.mov 2nd.mov 3rd.mov

2. Outfield challenge w/ base runners!

3. Runners at all bases w/ a pitcher and catcher:

Rd1- get leads; Rd2- straight steal, delay steal, & squeeze; Rd3- dirty

balls
picks to bases.

21 outs

Few more tips:

Have your runners w/ good speed going on down balls from 3rd. If hit to the
pitcher then tell them to get in a run-down so hitter can advance to 2nd.
Maybe have your outfielders practice running bases while hitting gb's to IF

Always remember you are in scoring position when at 2nd base so don't
run into an out at 3 on Infield ball in front of runner (i.e. 5/6 hole). Never
give the defense an easy out!!!

Hit and run with two outs (or when you have a good hitter/runner sit.),
know your hitters and especially the count on the batter! Look at your
defense coaches and see how u can exploit them. Steal 3rd on corner or ss
(sometimes they tell you what they are running verbally!) fake bunt to
draw in third.

Bunting/Short game
Everyone

needs to be able to bunt. NO matter

what!!!
Safety

squeeze with a good bunter with some

speed. Have your runner at 3rd sell the squeeze
(and they only go, if it gets by corners)

Make

sure hitter takes 2nd on squeeze bunts!!!

Drills
1. Players at home and 2nd: Rd 1- sac, Rd 2- drag/sac, Rd 3- squeeze
You can have defense (corner and middle at each station), it just
moves a little slower.
2. Live practice station: w/ Defense and runner @ 1; sac to 2nd; drag to
3rd; squeeze home (So, defense group, cage group, hitting group)

1 & 3 Situations

1. Know when it is good to run a 1st & 3rd play. A. weak hitter at plate. B.
to shake the d or a weak defense. C. the ideal runners on base. D. what
is the score/inning?

2. Fake bunt batter, to see what defense is doing or to just try and mess
up their plan. Most of time they will give you second base so take it!!!
Make sure the runner at 1st gets to 3rd on a run down between 3rd and
home.

Also, depending on the defense and your hitter sometimes a bunt is

perfect because no one is covering 1st base (2nd base is the cut). Then
bases are loaded and defense is really out of position and feeling the
pressure.

1st & 3rd (cont.)

3. Tag on a fly ball to catcher or at least draw throw down to second.

4. Utilize the run down with two outs between 1st & 2nd . Make sure your
kids know their job. Also teach runner at 3rd to break home on the 1st
throw in the run down.

5. Runner at 3rd have your batter hustle out of box on a BB or PB ball 4

w/ runner at 2nd . You can run 1st & 3rd and not waste a pitch on batter
possibly

DRILL: Then go into 1st & 3rd challenge. BR's vs D! Establish point
system.

Do Your Job (DYJ)

Moving runners Hit Opposite field!!! Work on it daily. Teach hitters to

look OUT and react IN. Google/youtube hitting oppo. Drill after drill
available.

Reduce Ks (Establish a 2-strike approach) * 2 Strike Approach.docx

Work counts * batting counts-averages.docx

Increase BBs, encourage HBPs !!! OBP% vs. BA%

Line drive, ground ball philosophy!!! LD/GB vs. FB%

Drill: DYJ

Conclusion

You must make your offensive philosophy clear everyday and push your
girls to be aggressive.

Reward aggressiveness and teamwork. *

Offensive EVALUATION CHART- 2014.doc

Help them to understand when to be aggressive and when not too (ie.
Last inning down by one and make 3rd out at 3rd with best hitter at
plate) They dont have to know it all, just have a sign acknowledging a
little caution here.

The best way to put pressure is to have runners on base, so find a way on
any way possible. Hustle goes a long way!!! More bbs, less ks, hbp, and
always, always promote GB/LD.
