R Community
R-1: Knowledge of Community Health
R-1-3: Demonstrate knowledge of the concept of health promotion
and disease prevention and communicable disease control in
community nursing
My knowledge on the extent of community nursing was small prior to
entering Nursing Foundations 2006. Since beginning lessons in class
on community nursing, Ive been given several examples of types of
nursing jobs that fall under the community umbrella. Examples such
as nursing within prisons, school nursing, and especially more
information on street nurses who provide education, care, and
advice to people on the streets who may partake in risky behaviors
like drugs or unsafe sex.
I never thought that school nurses really are providing care to the
community of youth attending school in the sense that they are
educating on prevention of communicable disease. This targeted age
group is at risk for participating in activities or behaviors that they are
unaware are directly harmful to their health. Same with providing care
to people who are living in poverty on the streets who are
unknowingly contributing to spread of disease/infection to themselves
and others. Ive also learned a more in depth approach to providing
this type of nursing because of all the discussion revolving around not
providing judgment and to be aware of any biases I may have before
entering a certain area to work.
Right now, still being in NFDN 2006, I would rate myself between the
good and fair proficiency ratings. I now understand the various
roles that fall under community nursing, but personally have little
experience in nursing scenarios within the scope. After learning more
about community nursing, Id definitely consider pursuing an
opportunity to try it in my career.

Now that I have plenty of examples of community nursing and

examples of what nursing care they provide, I would continue to
research career options and be open to trying something with working
in a community. I enjoy the idea of contributing and being apart of a
community and attributing to the wellness of a group of people! For
now, it has opened my options for my nursing career, and in the future
I will always be open to a position in community nursing.
