LESSON PLAN
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON ORGANISATION
Year Level: 7

Time: 1:00-1:40pm

Date: 19/1/15

This is the first lesson on the subject of gravity. We do

not assume students have any specific knowledge of
gravity other than everyday experiences.
Prior to this students completed a unit on Change to
an objects motion is caused by unbalanced forces
acting on the object so we would hope that students
would be coming to this topic with a good
understanding of force acting on an object

Learning Area: Science

Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum:
Physics/Gravity

General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

Critical and
Literacy
Numeracy
ICT
competence

Students Prior Knowledge:

creative thinking

Ethical
behaviour

Personal and
Social
competence

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Explain how gravity affects objects on the surface of Earth
Use the scientific method to record the results of an experiment
Use the ICT SpiderScribe and BookCreator
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Provision for students at educational risk:

All Students to have access to iPads.

iPads to have iMovie and BookCreator
Teacher to have created MindMap page in Spiderscribe for
students to contribute to.
Teacher to have created template in BookCreator
Teacher to have all equipment required for experiment.
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
Students are able to explain how gravity affects objects on the surface of the Earth
Students are able to use the scientific method to record the results of an experiment
Students able to use the ICT SpiderScribe and BookCreator

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Time

Motivation and Introduction:

Begin class by introducing the topic of Gravity.
As this is aimed at a Year 7 class, Gravity is the second of two Physical
Science units for the year. Prior to this students will have completed
Change to an objects motion is caused by unbalanced forces acting on
the object this will have given the students an introduction to forces in
preparation for gravity.
To establish students prior knowledge ask students to log onto
Spiderscribe and create a Mind Map about gravity.
Things we are looking for are:
Gravity is a force
Newtons theory of gravity
Galileos experiments with gravity
Relationship between mass and gravity
Relationship between mass and weight
Relationship between weight and gravity

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

In our full lesson plan the second half of our first lesson on gravity would
be separating the students into groups and asking them to devise an
experiment to investigate the effects of gravity. They would then be asked
to create a template of the experiment in Book Creator using the scientific
method, ready to conduct the experiment in the next lesson and record the
results.
For the purpose of this lesson, and to save time, we have skipped this
section and have pre-prepared the experiment.

iPad/iMovie

We will now be moving on to conducting the experiment. We will need our

iPads and iMovie to record the results.

1:20

Experiment conducted, balls dropped from a height and recorded by

students on their iMovie.
Students to be guided through using iMovie to analyse the results of the
experiment.
When students are happy with their analysis the results are to be written
up in the previously created BookCreator template.

1:35

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

Did people think that the ICT was useful, appropriate and used effectively?
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be
judged?)
Were the students able to use the software effectively?
Was the experiment a success?
Did the experiment effectively demonstrate the force of gravity and enable
the students to explain gravity?
