WELCOME TO DRAWING !!

This is worth a HOMEWORK grade of 20pts!

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Drawing is an upper level course designed for students interested in pursuing advanced methods of
drawing. Students will use their drawing skills to create meaningful artworks that focus on
composition, value, design, and technique. Students will hone their observational drawing skills and
create artists statements to explain the meaning of their artwork. Students will also be responsible for
weekly sketchbook assignments. Students must have received a C or higher in all previous art
courses.

As a studio art class, there are three general components to this class based on Ohios
Visual Art Standards (OVAS). All lessons and activities are planned around the following
areas as outlined by OVAS:
Personal Choice and Vision: Students construct and solve problems of personal relevance and
interest when expressing themselves through visual art.

Critical and Creative Thinking: Students combine and apply artistic and reasoning skills to
imagine, create, realize and refine artworks in conventional and innovative ways.

Authentic Application and Collaboration: Students work individually and in groups to focus
ideas and create artworks that address genuine local and global community needs.

Literacy: As consumers, critics and creators, students evaluate and understand artworks and other
texts produced in the media forms of the day.

RESPONDING AND REFLECTING (RE) Make connections, reconsider, question, self
assess
**Evaluating/critiquing your own work and the work of others, revising when
possible/necessary, learning from famous artists and styles (ART HISTORY).

By the end of the semester you will be able to:

Establish and practice creating conditions for successful drawing.


Draw from observation and imagination
Apply different types of perspective to create the illusion of depth.
Observe and create accurate values using a variety of drawing media
including drawing pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, chalk and colored pencil.
Apply different drawing techniques to create a variety of effects.
Understand and apply basic proportions of human form.

Consequences for Art Room Rule Violations:

If you break a rule the following consequences will be met1. Verbal warning
2. Student/Teacher conference
3. Lose participation points, documentation
4. Seat change/Recovery Time
5. Detention/Contact home

Participation Points

Each week you will begin with 50 points. You may lose points for non-participation
and/or disrupting the learning opportunities of others

Projects- I will provide a SELF-ASSESSMENT RUBRIC at the beginning of each project so


that all students understand how to get an A on each assignment.

Week One notes/syllabus = 40 points


Handmade sketchbooks: 4 books/50 pts each=200pts
Zen Tangle warm-ups: 15/1 per week -50pts/each=750pts
ZEN Tangle On-going Animal drawing= 200 points
Projects= 200 pts each.

GRADING

Learning will be assessed in this class using a variety of methods:

-Tests/Projects/Quizzes (Weighted at 50%)


-Classwork/Participation (Weighted at 25%)
-*Homework (Weighted at 25%)

Because this is a studio class, most work will be in either the Project or
Classwork categories
Overall grade will be based the schools established GRADING SCALE as follows:

A=90-100
or below

B=80-89

C=70-79

D=60-69

F=59

I will maintain accurate and current records of your progress in the online software
available for you or your parent/guardian to view at any time. There is a computer available
for use in checking grades during appropriate class time.

ART ROOM PROCEDURES


ENTERING THE CLASSROOM/BEGINNING CLASS:

Read whiteboard upon entering the room for needed supplies.


Pick up your folder/any handouts/supplies on the way to your seat.
Once at your seat, complete the bell work as assigned.

Work quietly until Mrs. Fred begins class. (Non-essentials can wait a few
minutes)

STORING AND WORKING ON ARTWORK:

Art projects should NOT LEAVE THE ART ROOM! If you need more time, come see
me!
I will allow a one-week grace period after the class has moved on if you need
additional time and werent absent.
Students may work on in the art room during lunch ONLY if they are behind. Get a
pass from me in advance!
Be sure to put your name ON EVERY PIECE.

PASSES
As a general rule, no passes will be issued during the first or last 15 minutes of

class.
Passes should be used for special circumstances and emergency. Please limit use
of passes to 3 times a semester.

IF TARDY
If you arrive after class starts (check the clock by the door/door is closed), enter the room
and sign in at the Tardy Binder, paperclip your pass to the page. You will lose participation
points for the day for each unexcused tardy. ASK FOR A PASS IF YOU WERE SPEAKING TO
AN ADULT

A detention will be issued with the second tardy and for any
tardiness beyond one.

When you have been ABSENT


As a studio class, being present every day in class is essential to your success in this class.
Absences are inevitable, however, YOU are responsible to make up any instruction you may
have missed. Check the ABSENCE CRATE. There may be handouts, web addresses,
directions you may have missed.
Check our class website, http://pchsfred.weebly.com/ for information, related videos and/or
handouts. You will have the same amount of days you missed, as you were absent to make
up any work.
Art projects or folders should NOT LEAVE THE ART ROOM! If you need more time, come see

Students may work on in the art room during lunch ONLY if they are behind.

At the end of class:

I will let you know when we have 5 minutes to clean up. Please do NOT clean up early! Our
time is valuable.
Do NOT leave a mess for me or other students, INCLUDING THE SINK AREA. In addition to
cleaning their own area and tools, students will be responsible for helping maintaining order
in the studio (see Studio Maintenance in grading section)

Stay seated at your seat until dismissed so Mrs. Fredriksen can check
the room

I am excited to be teaching art to high school students at Parma Community. I have been
teaching art for over seven years to students of all ages. At Parma Community I will be
teaching Digital Imaging, Ceramics, Art 1 and Drawing. I look forward to having your
