Elmer Galvez

Testimony to the State Black and Latino Caucus

Good morning. My name is Elmer Galvez and I am a senior at Common
Ground charter school in New Haven.
I live West Haven. My parents are both from Guatemala originally.
Before coming to Common Ground, I attended Bailey Middle School in
West Haven.
Common Ground has changed my life immensely. I feel empowered, and
like I have control over my life and my future.
Common Ground teaches us a love of the environment and how to care for
the planet.
I am a Green Job Corps member at Common Ground (Elmer can explain
more of that here). Its a position I have held since my sophomore year.
This has exposed me to environmental justice issues and has given me
agricultural training these are experiences that most kids my age dont
have.
I am excited to graduate, but sad to leave this school. Common Ground is
one of the friendliest and most welcoming communities I have ever known.
But this school has prepared me well for my future. I have plans and
dreams.
I want to go to Gateway Community College in New Haven and then
transition into a four-year school to study environmental or political
science.
I know I have worked hard to attain academic success, but I also credit the
support I have had at Common Ground.
I believe more Connecticut students should have opportunities like I have
had, and that depends on your support. Charter schools are making a
huge difference in students lives.
Thank you for your time.
