The demographics of the House of Representatives Secretariat workforce show an
employee population that is both experienced and well-versed in administrative
matters. As of October 10, 2014, there are a total of 1255 Secretariat plantilla employees. Of the total, 628 are female and 627 are male. Notable in the statistics is the average age of Secretariat employees, which is pegged at 49 years old. Breaking it the statistics down, there are 884 employees or 70.44-percent who are in the 46 and above age bracket. This is in stark contrast with those below 46, which number at 371 or 29.56-percent. Dissecting the figures further, there are only 26 HRep Secretariat employees or only two-percent who are at the 26-30 year old age bracket commonly referred to as young professionals. What does an older workforce mean for the House of Representatives? According to a recent study done by the Stanford Center for Longevity entitled, Adapting to an Aging Workforce, older workers can be valuable sources of knowledge and experience.1 As recommended by the study, employers can create a work environment that focuses on longevity rather than retirement by initiating retraining programs for older employees.2
