SPECIAL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
6:00 p.m. December 29, 2014
Brookside Education Center
Members present: Linda Laurie, Mark Ciota, Jeshua Erickson, Bill Leland, Jill Marin, and Julie Johnson.
Student Members Absent: Gabriel Minear and Quinn Petersen. Administrators present: Mike Funk and
Lori Volz. There were approximately 100 community and staff members present.
Chair Laurie presented Board member Jeshua Erickson with a school bell plaque for his service as a
School Board Member for Albert Lea Area Schools. Each Board member thanked Erickson for his years
of service to the board.
Leland/Erickson to approve the agenda as presented. In favor: Leland, Ciota, Laurie and Erickson;
against: Marin and Johnson. Motion carried 4-2.
Leland/Erickson to approve the Consent Agenda as presented. Motion carried 6-0.
Deputy Superintendent Volz presented a summary of the 2013-2014 School District Audit.
Johnson/Ciota to approve 2013-2014 School District Audit Report. Motion carried 6-0.
Leland/Erickson to approve discontinuing educational programs and positions as presented by Jim
Quiram and Sarah Kloeckl. In favor: Leland, Erickson, Ciota, Laurie and Johnson; against: Marin. Motion
carried 5-1.
Erickson/Ciota to approve placing licensed staff member on unrequested leave of absence as presented
by Jim Quiram. In favor: Leland, Erickson, Ciota, Laurie and Johnson; against: Marin. Motion carried 5-1.
Johnson/Ciota to approve memorandum of understanding with Albert Lea Education Association
regarding disability leave reserve as presented by Jim Quiram. Motion carried 6-0.
Jim Quiram presented a Mandatory Summer School and Intersession Instruction policy for consideration.
Kathy Niebuhr presented current extended school year programming and proposed a new extended
school year program for 2015-2016.
Board members discussed the Mandatory Summer School and Intersession Instruction policy.
Board members discussed the proposed 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school calendar.
