Mentor in Assessing and Facilitating Learning to a Third

Year Second Semester Nursing Student in placing the ECG
leads

This report will discuss the role of a mentor in facilitating learning as well as
formative and summative assessment. A third year student in her final
semester was assessed in placing ECG leads at the Emergency Department
(ED).This is one of the skills that serves as a part of the learning
competencies that a student has to achieve . A series of recommendations
will be made which indicate her areas of improvement. The Nursing and
Midwifery student will be named as Joy.
According to NMC, Mentor is used to denote the role of a registered nurse
who facilitates learning, supervises and assesses students. They furthermore
identify the eight mandatory standards that must be achieved, and within
the report I shall be referring to the Standards to Support Learning and
Assessment in Practice.
