Bio 408 Mechanisms of Animal Behaviour:

Comparative exploration of physiological and perceptual mechanisms that
control behaviors necessary for survival and reproduction in animals. Model
systems discussed include animal communication, mate choice, escape
behavior, learning and memory, orientation, biological rhythms, foraging
behavior.
-

This course interests me because Ive always had a love of animals,

and through studying biology in high school I always excelled and
found survival mechanisms, especially those in animals, extremely
fascinating. Im extremely interested to learn more about how animals
choose mates, learn, and communicate with on another.

Bio 481L Experimental Ecology and Evolution:

Explores experimentally approachable questions in ecology and evolution
through lectures, lab, and field experiments. Topics may include evolution of
bacterial antibiotic resistance, the evolution of virulence, seed predation,
plant biodiversity, and others.
-

I believe this course will give me a better base of knowledge when

considering larger concepts within the ecological sciences. The idea of
field experiments excites me, as well, as the lab work that well will be
doing in this class.

Genome 454 Origin of Genetics:

Discovery and eventual triumph of Mendelism in the early twentieth century.
Concepts of heredity from ancient times to the nineteenth century. Mendel' s
work and its rediscovery. Evidence contributing to cornerstone of classical
genetics -- the chromosome theory of heredity
Ive been interested in genetics and understanding the passage of traits from
one person (or animal) to another. I know that this course will only feed my
curiosity with the topic of genes as it will be more of a historical look back
on genetics and the various theories that there have been. It may be a good
precursor for me before I take other genetics-type courses.
