Impacts of Flooding

Duration
40 mins

Prior knowledge of learners (What do they already know?)

Flood is caused by excess water from heavy rainfall, with local community
effected.
The river runs out onto the GBR marine park and causes serious detrimental
effects
The problem has increased recently with more flooding than previous years
Humans have an effect on the water quality that flows during floods
Lesson objective/s
Students to gather and investigate underpinning impacts of flooding through
interview with water health professional.
Evidence of learning
Students gain deeper understanding of the flooding impacts on the reef and
marine environment
Students understand that land uses contribute to water quality and impact on
coral
Students participate with interactive technology and contribute valid questions for
discussion
Resources
IWB secure internet access.
Pre organized Skype interview with FBA Specialist.

Revisit through discussion learnings and challenges investigated What do we know? What are the bones of the problem? What are
the contributing factors? What questions do we have unanswered?

Discuss with students that today we will be having a guest speaker

via skype. Explain the role of FBA/GBRMPA to students

together to ensure a sustainable CQ. FBA is involved in water

testing, teaching farmers good land practice and holding mining
companies accountable. Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority
work with the FBA on occasion, as they are aware that what
happens on land effect the water.
Introduce the FBA/GBMPA specialist via the skype link
Reiterate to the guest speaker that we are trying to problem solve
the effects of flooding and if they could please share some of their
professional knowledge and advice to students.
Provide time for the specialist to present information to the cohort,
and students an opportunity to ask questions.
On their laptops students create a Voki digital avatar. Students
type in something they would like their avatar to say from the
presentation. Students are informed to design a problem
statement, drawing on gathered research and developing
knowledge.
Students then post the Voki onto their Wiki space.

Lesson
Conclusion

Students are encouraged to access peers Wiki sites and compare

common themes amongst the Vokis created.

LM gathers students together and collaboratively record a digital

video thanking the guest speaker for their time, and students
sharing their thoughts on interesting facts from the skype
experience.

learning experiences.

Evaluation / Reflection

Was the guest speaker a successful way to connect students with the world
outside the classroom ?
Were the components of ICT embedded in the lesson successfully?
Are students participating in tasks within the learning experience?
Were all students successful in creating a Voki?
Do students show determination and higher level thinking skills to develop a
solution?
