COURSE OUTLINE

English 11 is an academic course designed for students whose goals include post secondary
education. The program itself is designed to encourage students to become reflective, articulate,
literate individuals who use language successfully for learning and communicating in personal
and public contexts (Atlantic Canada English Language Arts Curriculum Guide: Grades 10-12).
English 11 provides students with the opportunity to study literary and informational
communications while experiencing the power of language. Language is fundamental to thinking,
learning, and communicating in all cultures. As students come to understand and use language
more fully, they are able to enjoy the benefits and pleasures of language in all its forms from
reading and writing, to literature, theatre, public speaking, film, and other media. (English
Language Arts Integrated Resource Package 1996).
OUTCOMES:
Students will be expected to:
Speaking and Listening:
Speak and listen to explore, extend, clarify, and reflect on their thoughts, ideas, feelings,
and
experiences
Communicate information and ideas effectively and clearly, and critically
Interact with sensitivity and respect, considering the situation, audience and purpose
Reading and Viewing:
Select, read and view with understanding a range of literature, information, media, visual,
and audio texts
Interpret, select, and combine information using a variety of strategies, resources, and
technologies
Respond personally to a range of texts
Respond critically to a range of texts, applying their understanding of language, use, and
form
Writing and Other Ways of Representing:
Use writing and other ways of representing to explore, clarify, and reflect on their thoughts,
feelings, experiences, and learning; and to use their imaginations
Create texts collaboratively and independently, using a variety of forms for a range of
audiences and purposes
Use a range of strategies to develop effective writing and other ways of representing and
to enhance their clarity, precision and effectiveness

The following topics may be covered in English 11:
Oral Presentations (Debating)
Short Stories
Novel Studies
Shakespearean theatre
Modern theatre
Poetry (various genres)
Media
Portfolio/Work Samples/Self Evaluations/Anecdotal Records
Writing (various types, with a focus on formal writing and essay format)
Writing mechanics (grammar, spelling, vocabulary)
Learning & Assessment Strategies that may be used in English 11:
Projects/Reports, Presentations, Observations, Interviews, Conferences
Active Listening, Class Participation, Group Work, Written Work, Essays
Tests, Quizzes, Exams
The purpose of this course is to help each student improve his/her ability to speak, write, and
otherwise communicate effectively.
Perhaps the most important thing a student can have to ensure success in English 11 is the desire
to learn. Therefore, students are responsible for the following:
showing respect at all times to the teacher and all members of the class
keeping up with reading and other assignments.
participating in group and class discussions.
meeting with the teacher to discuss any issues/problems/concerns before they become a
serious issue.
taking advantage of extra help opportunities.
doing your own work. Plagiarism is NOT accepted, and work must be properly referenced.

The final mark calculations for English 11 are as follows:


Term Work 80%

Final Exam 20%

If you have any concerns, please speak to me as soon as they arise, while there is still time to
work out a solution. Waiting until the last minute to seek assistance is not a sensible option in
this course.
