Discussion Board 1
1918- The body of texts calls for a change in the way secondary education functions. Through
industrial changes in America, more children had the opportunity to pursue a higher level of
education. The Cardinal Principles of Education recognizes the key components that have
affected education. Social changes took away other agents who educated a child growing up,
such as family life, therefore more responsibility was put on secondary education to shape a
child. Along with social changes, the classrooms themselves became more diverse which calls
for a broader form of instruction to reach all students. The focus of secondary education aimed to
seven key factors. The well-being of each student cornerstones a factor in secondary education,
from physical activities to hygiene. The reaffirmation of fundamental processes needs to occur in
post-secondary education especially with the diversification of student backgrounds. Three
components sought to teach students the means to fit in to different social structures. Secondary
education should teach the roles of being a family member, a worker, and a U.S. citizen. In
summary, Secondary education aimed to educate children on how to exist as a member of society
and to transition into adulthood.

1781- The land breaks up into counties which are responsible for establishing a school. Each
child holds the opportunity for three years of education in Greek, Latin geography and
arithmetic. During the three year stint, students are assessed and those with the highest scores are
given free continuing education paid for by the state. These students continue their education
until yet again another test is given. The cream of the crop are then able to attend William and
Mary free of charge in a field of their choice. Although less strict, this kind of setup still exists.
We are lucky enough to receive twelve-thirteen years of free education and every student at
every school is assessed for their abilities. Those who land in the highest mark, more often than
not, are offered free rides to colleges to continue their education. Other students can pursue
education at a post-secondary level but not free of charge.

1848- Horace Mann seeks education for all children regardless of their class. All man are created
equally, but some are more equal than others. This educational reform finds reason as to
eliminate the creation of a two dimensional class system: the poor and the wealthy. To expand,
educating the poor ought to be a basic human right. (Or God given in this case). If education
became available to all, there would be finer treasures, no animosity towards the wealthy from
the poor, and the means of production and quality of products will enhance immensely. The
overall quality of life and society enhances by leaps and bounds. An interesting emphasis became
the education of the political structure of the state and country. Every person should become
knowledgeable on the land they live on. This keeps constituents honest, creates a more aware
voting class, and classrooms become a place of political debate. I enjoyed immensely the part to
ensure no political influence came from the teacher. This is something still practiced in daily
classrooms. A teacher educations and should not throw their political agenda to their students.

2012- The Pennsylvania legislation states the creation of a board that oversees majors within
state universities. This board holds the ability to determine if a major will help the
commonwealth by properly training a student for a beneficial job. The board gives out federal
money to help pay for students who take up these majors at state universities. Basically, this is an
incentive for students to enlist in specific majors that the board sees beneficial to the states
wellbeing. I hope to see positive feedback within the following years on this legislation. One
thing that worries me is that Joey wont follow his dreams of becoming an English major
because hell get more state money by taking engineering. Although often unnoticed, society still
needs the philosophers and artists, not just doctors.
