CITY OF BOSTON
ORDER FOR NONBINDING PUBLIC OPINION
ADVISORY QUESTIONS REGARDING
THE 2024 SUMMER OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC GAMES,
PURSUANT TO M.G.L. CHAPTER 53, SECTION 18A

WHEREAS, The City of Boston and its people cherish the fundamental governing principles of
participatory democracy and spirited public debate; and
WHEREAS, The United States Olympic Committee (USOC), a private organization, has selected
Boston as its bid city to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a private
organization, for the 2024 Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games; and
WHEREAS, Boston 2024, the local organizing committee, is a private organization; and
WHEREAS, These private efforts may require the elected officials and residents of the City of Boston
to make significant financial and operational commitments to both the USOC and IOC;
and
WHEREAS, The potential for a Boston Olympics presents the opportunity for tremendous impact, both
positive and negative, on the residents of the City of Boston; and
WHEREAS, The unprecedented scale of these impacts necessitates the officially recorded input of the
residents of the City of Boston; THEREFORE BE IT
ORDERED, That pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 53, Section 18A, the City of Boston
Elections Department shall place on the official ballot for the Boston Municipal Election
on November 3, 2015 the following nonbinding public opinion advisory questions and
answer choices:
1. Should Boston host the 2024 Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games (the Games)? YES/NO
2. If Boston were to host the 2024 Olympics, should the City commit any public money to support the
Games? YES/NO
3. If Boston were to host the 2024 Olympics, should the City make any financial guarantees to cover
cost overruns for the Games? YES/NO
4. If Boston were to host the 2024 Olympics, should the City use its power of eminent domain to take
private land on behalf of the Games? YES/NO
