Description:
The course will introduce you to the exploration of the revolutions of
the world and the creative mind in French Literature from the middleages to contemporary times through an interrogation of the
representation of revolutions in works of fiction, poetry, critical essays
and theater. As a metaphor for the historic development of human
consciousness, the study of revolutions in literature reveals that the
narrator as a keen observer of the outer mouvements the world
manifests in the activity of writing, be it political, social, economic and
cultural.

Course Objectives:
This course will introduce you to a diversity of authors, periods and
genres. The goal for this course is to introduce to representations of
war and terror in French Literature specifically after the French
Revolution. In this class, you will also be introduced to texts of literary
criticism, which will help you to develop your research and critical skills
and form a more informed, interdisciplinary and constructed approach

to literature. Overall, this class will help you to develop both a historic
and critical knowledge of texts and authors while developing your
reading, writing and oral skills. Finally, the course will help you to
reassess the value and significance of major works of literature and
various genres (fiction, theater, essay and poetry) in the context of
contemporary issues.
Methodology :
Participation (30%)
Based on home preparation, readings, class participation to debates
and discussions and regular attendance.
Oral Presentation (25%)
An expos on a thematic topic outlined in the syllabus will help you to
conduct research on a interdisciplinary field that will build and reinforce
your skills for historic contextualization. (Instructions and rubrics

Mid-Term essay (25%)
A mid-term essay will present in a 5-6 pages long paper. Your essay
must include a bibliography that will list a minimum of five
bibliographical references: books and journals.
(MLA/WORLDCAT/JSTOR.) All quotations must be documented with
footnotes or endnotes and must strictly follow the MLA guidelines.

The final paper (25%)
5-6 page-long essay. Your paper must include a bibliography that will
list a minimum of 8 bibliographical references. Books or journals

Academic Honesty: I trust your honesty and integrity. Any student

receive a sanction ranging from an F on a particular assignment to an F
for the course with disciplinary action.
Attendance: Participation in all classes and punctuality are
mandatory. For each unexcused absence, your final grade will be
lowered by 1%
