Workshop 4

nidja baal Nyoongar budja traditional greeting &

acknowledgement.
Treating everyone the same will have differing consequences,
is it fair?
o Every child different: construct of unique individual
characteristics
o Wealth, gender, parents, education, age, race, culture,
political etc
o If ethically being just is the goal, must account for these
differences
Social justice equal =/= equitable, equity = thinking
different treatment
o Treat people according to their needs
o Dont even think differences, give each child what they
need
o Dont think deficit, what can they do? Not what they
cant
o Dont essentialise, find other ways to assess capability
o ALWAYS have high expectations, let the, live up to the
label!
Equity requires thinking different treatment (if necessary)
leading to equitable outcomes this is social justice and

should always be our goal.

Understand the importance of establishing positive family,
schools & community relationships (FSCR) for students

healthy development.
o Improves learning outcomes, retention, social skills
o Decreases negative coping mechanisms, absenteeism
Family-School Partnership Framework (FSCR) is a designed
framework
o Wide range of strategies, all shown to be affective at
times
o As a teacher you try strategies until one works, never
settle
o Distinguished by putting children first and always being

positive
Become familiar with different strategies that foster FSCR
because the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
expect of us to;
o 7.3 Engage with parents/carers & 7.4 Engage with
professional
communities

teaching

networks

and

broader

Strategies that stood out to me included as something Ill try

first;
o

To

foster

communication,

send

letter

home

introducing myself at the start of the year, then make

positive calls home regularly.

Biggest family structure now blended, not the stereotypical

nuclear.
Department very cognizant & supportive of building strong &
sustainable relationships between teachers and their students

and families.
Dont just be

competent.
Parent teacher interactions inherently difficult thing, but its

culturally

aware,

instead

be

culturally

important to always attempt such contact, its the only thing

that definitely works.
o Having parents and teachers collaborate in a childs
learning will always be a more likely to lead to finding
successful ways to teach.

I find it difficult to reflect on the techniques we are learning without

having applied them. I almost feel bursting with the things I can try
when I get to start teaching, and it makes me feel saturated. In the
reflections prior to this one I would present arguments from our
readings that stood out to me. Our readings are now dealing with
the very pointy end of teaching, actually interacting with the
students and the parents. Instead of thinking extensively on my
reflection and making considered textual references Im just going
to try to stop overthinking it and share my thoughts more directly!
The workshop isnt until tomorrow, but I find myself needing to do a
different reading. Contrary to the lecture and topic order, we had
out curriculum lecture today instead of the expected role of
schooling. It doesnt matter a great deal, but it drives home the fluid
nature of this unit and my continued inability to control all of the
content.
Im realising that to be successful in this field I need to be prepared
to give up control and roll with things. I expect at the workshop we
will do some discussion on the readings, share some thoughts and
launch into some scenarios to try and put our skillset to use on
potentially difficult real world situations. Much like our teaching style
must try to make the content real to its recipients, our workshops
try to make us think of the content in terms of its application to real
teaching situations. I will state again that I feel very well equipped
to tackle the challenge of my first prac. Even knowing that its
impossible to ever be over equipped, even with that in mind I still
feel very well equipped!
The workshop ran in very much the expected way, but as always the
discussions I had with my fellow students were quite fruitful. During
one of these discussions we were asked to outline a way in which we
would

try

and

foster

better

teacher

family

relationships

or

community engagement, what techniques could we employ from

everything we had learnt today or gleaned from the readings? Id
actually given this some thought during my readings and the use of
a letter to introduce myself to the parents and caregivers of my
students seemed like an ideal way to open the dialogue. I had then

intended to make regular positive calls home as a way to follow up

on this. Something that was suggested to me, and had never
occurred to me, was the use of a send home component too; this
would make the students feel more involved in the process! I was
struck by the elegant simplicity and this basic plan is now ready and
waiting to be used when I am a teacher and have my own
classroom. A very enjoyable and satisfying workshop, hopefully
tomorrow will be equally good.
