The article A Step-by-Step Guide to Personalized Learning
discusses the various aspects and steps of personalized learning for students, and how technology is incorporated into that learning. The article begins by defining personalized learning as a buzz phrase that educators use as an alternative to one-size-fits-all instruction. There are three terms that personalized learning is used in conjunction with: personalization, differentiation, and individualization. While each of these relate to personalized learning in their own way, they mostly focus on the instruction when they should focus on the learner. The next section of the article talks about how technology is used to support personalized learning through the three previous terms mentioned. With personalization, learners have access to a set of technologies to support their own learning. With differentiation, the teacher adapts instruction and chooses technology to support groups of learners, and finally with individualization the teacher selects technology for each students individual education plan. In each of these roles, technology is being used to engage the learner and allow the learner to create their own personalized learning experience. The article then finishes up by explaining the six steps to personalize learning. Step one is to understand who your learners are and how they learn best. While this is important in all kinds of learning, it is the foundation of personalized learning and considered to be especially important. Step two is to design a stage one personalized learning environment. To set up this personalized learning environment, the article suggests choosing four diverse learners from your class and assessing their learning qualities. Step three says to develop a universally designed lesson. While this step seems like a one-size-fits-all plan, the instructor should use their findings from the previous step to incorporate each different type of learning into the designed lesson. Step four is to facilitate driving and supporting questions. This step encourages the instructor to ask students even more questions to enhance their learning experience. Step five advises the instructor to choose tools, resources, and strategies for learning and teaching and step six wraps everything up by instructing to use assessment as learning. Each of these steps helps teachers to establish a better learning environment and are critical in the personalized learning process. While there werent necessarily any main arguments of the reading, there was informative information about what personalized learning was, and how to make your classroom a better place for personalized learning. I completely agreed with the steps and information presented in the article because of how detailed each step was and the explanation behind each. As a life-long learner, I believed that the overall idea of personalized learning is so important. Everyone
in the world is unique, and that includes being unique in their learning styles. Knowing this, it is no question why teachers are changing their classrooms and lesson plans to adapt to each type of learner.
