1. Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem.


The design is "a map of the world representing an azimuthal equidistant projection centred on the North Pole, inscribed in a
wreath consisting of crossed conventionalized branches of the olive tree, in gold on a field of smoke-blue with all water areas in
white. The projection of the map extends to 60 degrees south latitude, and includes five concentric circles".

193 countries are UN members.
3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
U.N. General Assembly is the representative organ of the UN. Decisions of major political
issues. Each country has one vote.
4. Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not?
Yes, their vote does matter because if they get 2/3 rds of majority of vote they get to change
the law.
5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
Its in Manhatten New York but not considered United States.
6. What are the main goals of the U.N.?
Unite all the countries together to make peace and equality.
7. Identify at least two challenges that exist in following the U.N. principles.
Agreement between the countries and language difference.
8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
An international organization headquartered in Switzerland, created after the World War I to
help provide a forum to solve international issues.
9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at least
two.
They wanted the world to follow rules to war and make it as fair as war can get. Also they
established boundaries and territories and that created anger between two or more countries.
10.Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons.
The League of Nations failed to stop WW2 because they did not influence world peace
enough. There were many disputes in the early 1900s over land between many countries,
and every time the League of Nations distributed the land unevenly.

WW2 was just ending and Germany was surrendering________

13.Why might the League of Nations be considered the forerunner of the United Nations?
Because they had a similar purpose but the United Nations have been more successful.

14.What is the U.N.s Security Council, and what countries are involved in it?
The nations most powerful body, it has the responsibility for international peace and security.
5 nations make up this sector, China, France, Russia, the UK, and US.
15.Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be problematic? In other
words, what principle does it appear to violate? Identify two issues.
Because if one person vetos it cant work. Cooperation between everyone is hard to
establish.
16.Who is the newest U.N. member, and what noteworthy nations are not members of the U.N.?
Why has U.N. membership grown?
South Sudan became a new member on July 14 th in 2011. Some notable nations not part of
the U.N. are Palestine and the Republic of China. The U.N. membership has grown because
they want for peace and equality has grown but also the acts of terrorism have grown and
many nations want it to end.

U.N. is funded by voluntary donations.

organizations).
Help with currency, drugs and crime, labor, and food and agriculture.
2. What is the title of the U.N.s leader, and who currently holds this position? How is this
position used to counterbalance the strength of some U.N. members?
They are referred to as the Secretary General and currently it is Ban Ki-Moon of South Korea.
It balances it out because he is not referred to as the leader of the nations.
3. What do you feel is the future of the U.N.? Does it have a place in todays world? Why or why
not? What can it do to improve its position? Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph explaining
your views.
I believe that the future of the United Nations has a bright future and what they have set out
for the world are great. The United Nations will try and prevent as many wars as possible and
this could greatly impact the world in a positive way. I think right now terrorism is hurting the

United Nations but I believe they will overcome it and put an end to it. I believe all the nations
should join and create peace for a better world.
