Up 7.2, Day 1
You deposit $1250 in an account that pays 3.54% annual interest
compounded continuously. How much money do you have after
15 years?
Do the following functions represent exponential growth or
exponential decay? Describe the domain, range, and asymptote.

Target 7.2, Day 1

EVALUATE LOGARITHMS AND
GRAPH LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS
(7.4)

Describe the inverse operation you would use to solve the

following equations:

x + 4 = 12
x 6 = 10
2 x = 14
x 6 = 24
2

x = 81

x = 27

4 x = 100

log 4 100

A logarithm is the inverse operation of an exponent. Even though

its a word (not a symbol like +), it is still just an operation!

Exponential Form

log 2 8 = 3

log base 2 of 8 is 3

Common Log

log e x = ln x

Natural Log

Evaluate with a calculator. Round to two decimal places.

log 8

ln 0.3

The wind speed s of a tornado (in mph) as it travels d miles along

the ground is given by

s = 93 log d + 65
Find the wind speed of a tornado that
travels 220 miles.

Examples of inverse functions:

f ( x ) = 8x

f ( x) = 2 x

f 1 ( x ) = log8 x

f 1 ( x ) = log 2 x

Find the inverse function.

y = 6x

y = log12 x

y = 10 x

y = ln x

y = e x5

y = log1 3 ( x +1)

Since a logarithmic function (in red) is the inverse of an

exponential function (in blue), they will be symmetrical about the
line y = x.

For homework, only state the domain, range, and asymptote for the
graphs. Do not graph.

Describe how the graph is shifted. Then state the domain, range,
and asymptote.
