Unlocking Life's Code:

Implications for Faculty and Healthcare Providers

Program Description:
The Genome: Unlocking Life's Code is a high-tech, high-intensity museum exhibition opened
originally at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. to celebrate the 10th anniversary of
researchers producing the first complete human genome sequence - the genetic blueprint of the
human body - in April 2003. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Smithsonian's
National Museum of Natural History and the National Human Genome Research Institute of the
National Institutes of Health.
The exhibition is now traveling to locations around the country with the second stopThe Tech
Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA. In conjunction to launching this exhibit, the National
Human Genome Research Institute is hosting educational programs for practicing nurses
and nursing educators to highlight the value of the exhibit as an innovative teaching
strategy. These education programs will present content on the relevance of genomics to
healthcare, strategies for curriculum integration, resources to facilitate personal and academic
genomics education and explain approaches for using the exhibit as an innovative educational
resource. All sessions will end with a tour of the museum exhibit to highlight content that aids in
