Planning for Interview One

Interviewees Name: Band all members
Date and Time of interview:

How will you record the interview?

We will record the interview with the use of two cameras, because of the amount of people in the
band we will have one camera focusing on the band and one on the interviewer.

Production Booklet

In what medium (audio, visual, written etc.) will the final interview be presented?
The interview will be recorded in both an audio and video interview.

What information do you need to get from this interview?

We need to find out how the band started up in the industry by asking them questions such as how
they publish their music, we also because they perform before the interview will be asking them
about how crowds of people who have not heard their music before react to it and if they have
performed covers and if they got better reception with those.

Describe how you are planning on contacting and liaising with your talent (interviewee)
We have contacted the person organizing the event and have made sure that bands are available
to interview on location, we will ask the person if they are willing to be interviewed on location
when we are there as it will promote their band to be in an interview.

How will you make sure unnecessary sounds etc are not recorded?
We are making sure that there are two microphones next to the interviewer and the people being
interviewed so as not to pick up background noise we also have a place reserved for recording
away from background noise.

If visual recording, explain how you will deal with any issues caused by ambient light.
We are recording in an area we already have reserved so we can set up lighting before the
recording so that the lighting looks good.

What equipment will you need to carry out this interview?

We will need two cameras and lighting equipment if necessary on location.

Interview Style for Interview One

Production Booklet

What will your interview style be? (Formal, informal and chatty, intense, questioning,
argumentative, friendly, jokey)
We have decided to go for a more informal style when recording our interviews.
Why have you chosen that style?
We chose to do this as because we are discussing the topic of the music industry, music is
something that people mostly only listen to for enjoyment, meaning it is more of a casual style and
not highly debating.
Add research of other interview/chat shows where the presenter has a similar style. You can insert
another page here for your research.

Multi-Camera Production Roles

You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be doing
which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.
For more information on what each role entails, visit
http://www.bbc.co.uk/academy/collegeofproduction/collections/job_profiles
And search through the video profiles on the site.
TASK 1: Define each of the following roles;
Interviewer
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/employment-emploi/otheropp-autresopp/interview/descriptioneng.html
Describe their job Reference your research
An interviewers job is to usually go to a location to interview someone who is involved with the
topic currently being discussed on the news, this will often be to get the person side of the
story or opinion on the topic, for example if the topic is a crime they will usually interview
people involved in some way or relatives of the victim.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (i.e. control room, studio floor)
They will usually work in a studio if the person being interviewed has come to the studio or
they will usually be on location wherever the interviewee is.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

An interviewer need to be able to be comfortable in front of a camera as well as in front of any
guest, as well as this they need to be entertaining in front of a camera and be able to
improvise.

Director
http://www.prospects.ac.uk/television_film_video_producer_job_description.htm
Describe their job - Reference your research
A director is in charge of controlling everything the viewer sees and hears, they keep the
audience interested in the show and make sure they can see where the action is happening at
the time its happening. As well as this they also work in the pre-production and after the
production is completed to make sure it is done to a good standard.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (i.e. control room, studio floor)
They will usually work in both the studio floor and the control room as they need to be in charge
of everyone and make sure they are doing their job well.

Production Booklet

What skills do they need to do their job well?

A director probably need the most skills to complete their job to a good standard as they are in
control of all of the people in each section of the production of the programme, they need to
be able to make sure everyone is doing their job and be in control at all times, they need to
have extensive knowledge of different sections of the media so they know how much time
goes into each part of the media.

Camera Person
http://www.prospects.ac.uk/television_camera_operator_job_description.htm
Describe their job - Reference your research
The job of the camera operator is mainly to follow the directors orders during the production
and make sure they get the shots that they are asked to produce from the director.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (i.e. control room, studio floor)
The camera person will be in the studio in order to film what is going on in there.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

Camera operators need to be able to have steady hands in order to give a clear picture. They
also need to be able to use the camera and be used to the controls on it. Concentration is
also important in camera work because if something occurs in the interview that isnt scripted
for example the guest doing a demonstration then they will need to adapt and follow them.
One more thing is organisation on knowing where they are meant to be and who or what they
are meant to be filming.

Sound Mixing http://www.media-match.com/usa/jobtypes/production-sound-mixer-jobs402760.php

Describe their job - Reference your research
A sound mixers job is to control what the audience of the show can hear during the show, this
needs to be controlled when someone non location is introduced and the sound input has to be
wherever the video is playing as well.

Production Booklet

Which part of the studio do they work in? (i.e. control room, studio floor)
They will work In the control room.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need to have good reflexes and stay concentrated in case something goes wrong and makes
sure the audience can hear what is happening

Vision Mixing http://130.88.36.167/p/types_of_job/vision_mixer_job_description.jsp

Describe their job - Reference your research
Vision mixers decide which cameras are going to be used at a particular time in the show to give
the best and clearest picture of what is going on in the studio to the viewer. They make sure that the
audience sees what they want them to see and so that is a good quality.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (i.e. control room, studio floor)
Control room

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need a lot of experience in their department to do their job well, and be able to keep
concentrated even when nothing is going on.

Define the format of your programme

What will happen in the first segment?
In the first segment of the show we will have Jarrod interviewing someone who is just starting up in the
music industry and uses mainly the internet to publish her music and gain a fan base, this will take place in
the studio with cameras set up to gain Jarrods reactions and hers.

What will happen in the second segment?

In the second section of the programme it will feature my interview of a band on location at a music festival,
this will be shot using two cameras on location, that will film both the interviewer and the people being
interviewed, there will be shots of the performance they gave before the interview playing over some section
of the interview.

What will happen in the third segment?

In the third section we have Matt talking to someone who has already been in the music industry for a long
time, he will be asking him how he started out as an artist and how he has progressed in the industry since
then and how he has improved this will lead to him performing during the credits.

Any further notes;

Production Booklet

Using your mind map, answer the following questions.

What will the presentation style be? (formal, informal and chatty)
This will be an informal interview with the people being interviewed, it will be a more casual conversation
between the interviewer and the guest, considering the fact that the topic is of music which is something
people listen to for enjoyment, this means that an entertainment style is more suitable than the other styles.

Add research of other interview/chat shows where the presenter has a similar style.
Define the visual style of your show.
The visual style of the will be very music based; there will be a music studio in the background.

This will be the background.

There will also be a guitar in-between the two sofas on a stand just to add to the feel of the music setting
and the subject.

Stick in relevant images of previous shows, interiors you would like to emulate, lighting style etc.

Production Booklet

Links
How will you link each interview to each other?
(You may use cut aways to clips of them doing something relevant. Remember you will all be
swapping roles so you may not be able to film live at this point.)

Link between interview 1 and Interview 2

In the interview we will have the person who was the interviewer for interview 2 sitting their during the
interview so that there can be a transition between the two videos.

Link between interview 2 and Interview 3

Then at the end of the on location interview, the interviewer will make a transition back to the studio
so that it also makes sense and the interview can be discussed there.
