Lesson Content
Review the KWL chart from the previous day with the students about Harriet
Tubman.
Ask students what they remember about her.
Introduce the concept of a timeline to the students.
Tell them that we are going to work together to create a timeline of Harriets life.
Go over what a timeline is and how important it is to write dates in order.
Watch a biography of Harriets life.
After the video, pass out the worksheets to the students.
Read the directions to them and complete it together as a class.
Read each prompt to the students.
Have them talk with their group about what the think should come first.
Pull a popsicle stick to call on a student to answer.
Continue to do this until the timeline of her life is complete.
Collect their timelines and make sure that their names are on it.
Have students clean up and put all of their materials away.

For student F, who doesnt speak English, I will have a classroom assistant translate my instruction if he doesnt understand
what I am asking him to do.

Answer Key
1820:
Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Dorchester County,
Maryland.
1844:
At the age of 24, she married John Tubman, a free African American
who did not share her dream of freedom.
1849:
Harriet escaped for the first tie using The Underground Railroad.
1850:
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed and Harriet was made an official
conductor of The Underground Railroad.
1908:
Harriet established a home for the elderly and continued to live
there.
1913:
Harriet Tubman passed away in her home and is known for saving
around 300 slaves.
