1. What is quality?

a. Quality is measurable. You must always be able to define the


requirements. If the characteristics meet the requirements, then
it should be a quality device. I like the DOD definition of quality
the best, which is doing the right thing right the first time,
always striving for improvement, and always satisfying the
customer.
2. What is TQM?
a. Total Quality Method is to take quality, which is hard to define
and break it down into smaller, more manageable parts. The end
result is a quality product to the customer through smaller
specific paths and/or targets. The DOD does this through four
main subsets, the people who work on the products, the
processes to make the products, the products themselves and
the environment that the products are made/rendered.
3. How can we achieve organizational excellence with quality?
a. Total Quality focuses on always improving anything in the
business, continually. This causes every aspect of the business to
function at its peak, which in results in organizational excellence.

a. Plan Conduct Research

5. What are the most common errors when starting quality initiatives?
a. Deming identified Seven Deadly Diseases. The included the lack
of a consistent plan, emphasis on short-term profits, requiring
managers to perform without resources, managers switching jobs
frequently, not understanding what you dont know, high medical
costs and lawyers.
6. Explain the cost of poor quality
a. There are many costs of poor quality. If you cant make the
product right the first time, then youll have to re-work the
product which will require more time and resources. If the poor
quality is not identified in house, then the customer will become
dissatisfied with poor quality product and take their money to
other companies.
7. What are the quality characteristics of world-class organizations?
a. The American Management Association (AMA) completed a
survey across the globe and identified 15 top areas that
companies are worried about to compete in the global economy.
Of those a few are directly related to quality. They are; customer
service, quality control and assurance, innovation, team-based
approach, partnership and continuous improvement.
8. Responsibility and total quality

a. By implementing total quality, youre not limiting responsibility to


create a quality product only to management, you empower the
everyday worker to have the responsibility to focus on quality
and ensure they will always product to the highest extent
possible.
9. Discuss some models for ethical quality decisions
a. The full disclosure model focuses on the organization being able
to explain itself to a broad-section of stakeholders. It has an
advantage since you apply the values of your stakeholders to
your company. The golden rule module focuses on the old rule,
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This also
takes the view of stakeholders and is also very simple to
understand.

What is the engineering managers role in quality ethics?
a. As the manager, you are responsible for establish very high
ethical standards, setting a positive example, exceeding the
example and stepping in when you identify unethical actions.
There are multiple ways to do this, such as the best-ratio
approach, the black and white approach and the full-potential
approach.
