Mentor

Role
What is the role of a mentor?
To support students through the process leading towards the exhibition
Act as a guide and resource in the accomplishment of specific tasks during
the exhibition process
Monitor student progress responsible for some aspects of student formative
assessment which happen throughout the entire exhibition process
Contribute to reflecting on the exhibition process
Communicate any questions or concerns with the Grade 5 class teachers. If
students are performing below the expectations set out in the guidelines,
please inform the teacher ASAP so we can address the problem before its
too late.
Understand the process and expectations
Assist in the search for additional resources
Meet with students regularly at an arranged time, at least once per week to
set goals, look at students work, and give immediate feedback
Assist the students in setting personal deadlines
Assist students with organising information, visuals and artefacts needed
Discuss possibilities of action that can be taken at any point during the inquiry
process
Encourage students to self and peer assess and reflect throughout the
process
Review meeting log with students and sign
When will our mentor meet with my group?
Meetings should be at least once a week during a scheduled primary
classroom period. Students are responsible for scheduling meeting times.
What happens at a mentor meeting?
Your team will/should go to your mentor with an idea of what you would like to
achieve in the meeting. You will have met beforehand and discussed your goals for
the meeting and your learning goals for the week.
A meeting could look like this:
10 minutes: review of what youve been doing since you last met
10 minutes: Synthesizing what you have learned, making sense of what
you have gathered AND/OR discussing next steps
10 minutes: problem solving what are you finding difficult about the
process? What are you struggling with as a group?
5 minutes: group reflections
Mentors will take minutes of the meeting using the template on the server in the
Exhibition folder. Copies will be made for all group members to put in your folder.
The students will bring their Exhibition folder to each meeting at a set venue.
Mentors will need their Mentor Guidelines.
