Population Pyramid Assignment
2)

a. The population pyramids of Japan and Zambia show significant differences in

their level of development and population growth. For Zambia, the base is much wider
than the rest of the pyramid, meaning the youth population greatly outnumbers the adult
population. As a result, Zambias population will grow rapidly in the future as these youth
grow older and have their own offspring. Japans population pyramid, in contrast, is widest
in the middle-age range, showing that Japan is a developed country with a shrinking
population.

d. 10 conclusions:
1) Most countries contain more elderly women than men
2) India has far more youth boys than girls

3) The South African population will likely be decreasing by 2050

4) The population of retired people in Germany will decrease greatly by 2050
5) The overall life expectancy for all countries will be higher in 2050
6) Indias population is growing faster than that of the United States
7) South Africas female population rapidly declines in the middle-age range
8) Indias male population is changing faster than the female population
9) In 2050, China is expected to have more centenarians than will India
10) Women generally live longer than men in South Africa

3) As shown by its population pyramid, India is a developing country; therefore, its

population is growing rapidly. So rapidly in fact, that if it keeps growing at this pace, the
country will not have enough natural resources to support that large of a population.
Several measures including better education have successfully decreased Indias birth
rate, yet the goal of zero growth is still far from accomplished. Despite this, too rapid of a
decrease in population can also be harmful for a country. As each generation grows older,
they require a certain amount of care from the younger generations. If there are not
enough younger citizens to support the elderly, the country is bound to fail. We can learn
from this that measures such as education must be taken early on to keep the population
stable, and if change is still necessary later, it must be dealt with in slow, steady fashion.
