Education Philosophy

To be successful in helping all students in their classroom achieve their potential,

teachers must be able to connect with and challenge each individual. Teachers must also believe
that every child can learn, and that they have all the ability to succeed (Newman, 2013). My
philosophy for children revolves around my passion for children and the need to make a
difference in a childs life. As a reflection on my beliefs regarding teaching and learning, my
mission as a teacher is to promote positive learning, provide an emergent learning environment,
and provide teaching and learning that revolves around each childs unique learning style and
personality.
Children are like vessels open to learn something new each day. I enjoy being the
individual that has the opportunity to make a difference in a childs life and be that person to
pour into that vessel. My role as an educator is to give children the tools that cultivate their own
garden of knowledge. It is also my role to use those tools to prepare them for occurrences of the
real world through their learning and communication. The necessary learning begins with the
very young and should become habitual in our preschools, nursery schools, and kindergartens
and increase rigorously in later years (Newman, 2013). As early as infancy to adolescence,
children are placed in different learning environments to target their growth and development.
Providing children with the right tools to be successful and having teachable moments are the
different things that I strive for. Sociocultural theory focuses on how culture- the values, beliefs,
customs, and skills of a social group- is transmitted to cooperative dialogues between children
and more knowledgeable members of society- is necessary for children to acquire the ways of
thinking and behaving that make up a communitys culture (Berk, 2013).

While children are my main focus, it is also important to allow parents to be aware and
knowledgeable of what their child is learning. I believe that it is important to involve parents at
least once or twice a week in engaging in their childs work. In todays society, the advancement
of technology is what most schools and learning systems rely on, so parent involvement is a
major deal in the development of learners. Parents expect me to target their childrens potential
and teach them the tools they need to be successful. They also expect me to provide them with
tools to be helpful in the process of targeting their childs unique learning style and personality.
The world as we know it is changing at a fast pace. Jobs of the future will increasingly demand
a new set of skills. These skills will require students to be able to collaborate with one another,
seek out and analyze a variety of information, use technology to enhance their performance, and
be creative and resourceful (Newman, 2013). Learning is essential to our youth today, and it is
important that they have a strong foundation of learning at an early age. I am currently a
childcare teacher and I enjoy watching my children grow and develop through the skills of my
teaching and their exploration. I want to provide parents with the opportunity to allow their
children essential learning. What students are taught and the methods used to teach them are
often at the heart of many arguments used to demand more school choices (Newman, 2013).
There are many restrictions in child care and support; I want to be able to have the available
resources to provide to families.
As a professional, it is important to have the passion to nurture and care for childrens
growth and development. Children are our future! Promoting an emergent curriculum that
allows children to explore the world around them, learn at their pace, and socialize with their
classmates is what I find is important to target their growth and development. Piagets theory of
cognitive development helps to understand how a childs mind understands and learns. He also

believes that the child learns through experiences and exploration. According to his
developmental theory, children actively construct knowledge as they manipulate and explore
their world (Berk, 2013). It recognizes as I stated before that each child has his or her unique
learning styles and personalities. Piaget believed that each child goes through different stages
before being knowledgeable and understanding certain things. He believed that a child had to
master one stage at a time before exceeding or being knowledgeable.
Teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. As a teacher, it is
important to me to instill the qualities needed for children to be successful. My passion for my
work and for my children will allow me to provide them with those qualities. I will incorporate
themes, group work and hands-on learning in order to make children active learners that find
interest in the work that they are doing and learning. I will also incorporate learning that focuses
on the world around them that allows them to be active and knowledgeable of society. Teaching
is a lifelong process of learning new philosophies, strategies, and how to adapt to the world. I
have learned that in order to be successful you have to learn from the students, the parents, and
those around you.
