THE TAMING OF THE

SHREW

Journal
Prompts

JOURNAL #1 (INDUCTION)

The Induction introduces the

motif of disguise. Who acts
the part of whom? Why? How
is disguise carried over into
the play itself?

CLOSING: MAKE A PREDICTION

What might happen when

Katherine and Pretuchio meet
for the first time?
What might happen when
Bianca encounters Luncentio,
as her tutor, for the first time?

JOURNAL #2 (ACT II)

Upon fi rst meeting, Petruchio and
Katherine engage in a battle of wit,
which is displayed through their use of
fi gurative language such as puns and
metaphors. What does this interaction
seem to reveal about each of these
characters? Who seems to win? Is there
any indication that Petruchio is
attracted to Katherine or Katherine to
Petruchio?

JOURNAL #3 (ACT III)

Throughout Act III, Shakespeare
begins to reveal a different side to
characters such as Bianca,
Katherine, and Petruchio. In what
ways are changes in behavior
evident in these characters? Does
their unusual behavior seem
authentic? Why or why not?

MONOLOGUE VS. SOLILOQUY

Monologue: A speech given by a single person to an
audience within the play or the audience in the theatre.
There will always be other actors on the stage when a
monologue is delivered.
Soliloquy: A speech that one gives to oneself. In a play, a
character delivering a soliloquy talks to himself/herself
thinking out loud so that the audience better understands
what is happening to the character internally.

Do Now:
With a partner, go through Acts I-III
and identify one example of a
monologue and one example of a
soliloquy (hint: Act II).

JOURNAL #5 (ACT V)

Many critics mark the sun/moon

scene on the road to Padua
(scene 5) as the turning point in
the play which indicates Kate's
taming. What is different about
this scene? If she is tamed, what
is she submitting to? Is it really
a "submission," or can it be
interpreted in other ways?
