Afghanistan vs Samoa

What are the Millennium

Development Goals?
The eight Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) which range from halving extreme
poverty rates to halting the spread of
HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary
education, all by the target date of 2015
form a blueprint agreed to by all the worlds
countries and all the worlds leading
development
institutions.
They
have
galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the
needs of the worlds poorest.

Goal #1: Eradicate Extreme

Hunger and Poverty
From 1990 to 2015, to halve the amount of
people whose income is less than $1.25 a
day and to halve the amount of people who
suffer from hunger.

Goal #1
Afghanistan
Poverty
GNI per capita 2013, US$: $690
GDP per capita 2010-2014,
US$: $664.80
Annual GDP growth rate 2014:
1.5%
Hunger
Use of improved drinking water:
56%

Samoa
Poverty
GNI per capita 2013, US$: $3,970
GDP per capita 2010-2014, US$:
$4,212.40
Annual GDP growth rate 2014:
2.0%
Hunger
Use of improved drinking water:
99%

Comparison: When looking at the numbers between

both countries, Samoa has a higher amount of money
per capita. Samoa also has a better source and better
improved drinking water.

Goal #2: Achieve Universal

Primary Education
By 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls
alike, will be able to complete a full course
of primary schooling.

Goal #2
Afghanistan
Enrollment ratios:
Females as a % of
males, Primary: 72%
Gross enrollment ratio
for males 2012: 135
Gross enrollment ratio
for females 2012: 103

Samoa
Enrollment ratios:
Females as a % of
males, Primary: 100%
Gross enrollment ratio
for males 2012: 103
Gross enrollment ratio
for females 2012: 108

Comparison: Education is a huge factor in determing the

the future of a country. Samoa has a higher female
enrollment rate, but a lower gross male rate. Samoa also
has a higher percentage in females as percent of males.
From our data, Samoa has a higher turn out in primary
education.

Goal #3: Promote Gender

Equality and Empower
Women
Eliminate gender disparity in primary
education, and eventually in all levels of
education.

Goal #3
Afghanistan
Enrollment ratios for
secondary education:
females as a % of males:
55%
Proportion (%) of seats held
by women in national
parliaments, 2014: 28%

Samoa
Enrollment ratios for
secondary education:
females as a % of males:
111%
Proportion (%) of seats held
by women in national
parliaments, 2014: 4%

Comparison: There are gender inequality within both

nations, and for secondary education Samoa has better
numbers, but when we look at the percentage of women in
National Parliaments, Afghanistan has more women then
does Samoa. Both of us look at are groups, and believe the
gender equality is somewhat the same in both countries.

Goal #4: Reduce Child Mortality

Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and
2015, the under 5 mortality rate.

Goal #4
Afghanistan
Under 5 mortality rate
in the years of
1995: 52
2000: 56
2005: 58
2012: 61

Samoa
Under 5 mortality rate
in the years of
1995: 68
2000: 69
2005: 71
2012: 73

Comparison: The mortality rate for the countries

were interesting, before looking at the data we though
that Afghanistan would have worse numbers. When
we did research we found that Samoa had worse
numbers. Afghanistan has a lower mortality rate.

Goal #5: Improve Maternal Health

Reduce by three quarters, between 1990
and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio.
Achieve, by 2015, universal access to
reproductive health.

Goal #5
Afghanistan
Maternal mortality
ratio out of 100,000
births: 400
% of pregnant women
receiving prenatal
care, 2008: 36%

Samoa
Maternal mortality
ratio out of 100,000
births: 58
% of pregnant women
receiving prenatal
care, 2009: 93%

Comparison: Compared to the infant mortality it was

interesting to see that Samoa had less maternal deaths (58 out
of every 100,000) and Afghanistan had more maternal
mortality. ( 400 out of every 100,000). More questions and
further research should be done on this topic.

Goal #6: Combat HIV/AIDS,

Malaria, and Other Diseases
Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse
the spread of HIV/AIDS. Achieve, by 2010,
universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS
for all those who need it. Have halted by
2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of
malaria and other major diseases.

Goal #6
Afghanistan
Incidence of Tuberculosis per
100,000 people, 2013: 189
Health expenditure per capita,
2012, US$: $51
DPT Immunizations, % of
children ages 12-23 months,
2013: 71%
Measles Immunizations, % of
children 12-23 months, 2013:
75%

Samoa
Incidence of Tuberculosis per
100,000 people, 2013: 2
Health expenditure per capita,
2012, US$: $245
DPT Immunizations, % of
children ages 12-23 months,
2013: 95%
Measles Immunizations, % of
children 12-23 months, 2013:
99%

Comparison: While looking at the numbers for tuberculosis

we can see that there is more incidents in Afghanistan. Also
Samoa spent more on health insurance than Afghanistan.
Samoa also has higher immunization rates.

Goal #7: Ensure Environmental

Sustainabilty
Integrate the principles of sustainable development
into country policies and programmes and reverse
the loss of environmental resources. By 2010,
reduce biodiversity by a significant reduction in the
rate of loss. By 2015, halve the proportion of the
population without sustainable access to safe
drinking water and basic sanitation. By 2020, a
significant improvement in the lives of at least 100
million slum dwellers.

Goal #7
Afghanistan
Use of improved
sanitation facilities:
29%
Use of improved
drinking water sources
(%) 2012, total: 56%
Access to electricity,
% of population, 2010:
41.0%

Use of Samoa
improved
sanitation facilities:
92%
Use of improved
drinking water sources
(%) 2012, total: 99%
Access to electricity,
% of population, 2010:
99.6%

Comparison: When comparing the numbers on the

improvements on environmental sustainability Samoa has
better, sanitation, drinking water, and access to electricity.

Goal #8: Develop a Global

Partnership for Development
Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, nondiscriminatory trading and financial system. Address the
special needs of least developed countries. Address the
special needs of landlocked developing countries and small
island developing States. Deal comprehensively with the debt
problems of developing countries. In cooperation with
pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable
essential drugs in developing countries. In cooperation with
the private sector, make available benefits of new
technologies, especially information and communications.

Goal #8
Afghanistan

Samoa

Expense (% of GDP)
2012: 41.0%
Total reserves
(includes gold, current
US$), 2013:
$7,288,702,809

Expense (% of GDP)
2012: 0.0%
Total reserves
(includes gold, current
US$), 2013:
$170,853,058

Comparison: Samoa has a lower percentage of the

percentage of GDP when compared to Afghanistan. Samoa
also has a higher reserve then Afghanistan. So, from our
numbers we believe that Samoa is better finically.
