Narrative Report in PSY202

A Visit to the Harvest of Hope, Lucena City

When we reached our destination, we were asked to stay on the open area of the school
because the school head will give an introduction and reminders to our class. At that moment we
saw a boy having with his teacher on putting laundry clips on a cylinder and later on the teacher
explained to us the purpose of that activity.
The class was divided into groups with 5 members each and one at a time toured the
small building. We interviewed teachers who are currently conducting a class at that moment.
As we visit each cubicle, we noticed that every special child also has a special therapy as
well. On the first door, we saw a kid jumping in a trampoline and a kid sitting still and waiting
for his turn, on the second door two special men are having their academic lessons, the 1 st one in
his 25-30 years who is doing the alphabet and a boy in his 10-12 years is also having an activity,
once in a while he urinates in his seat and he usually throws his slipper. On the third area that we
visited, we saw three kids waiting for their turn as they play a game that is similar to hop scotch.
And on the last door we saw a kid who is very intelligent as he knows his name and his age and a
friendly boy who greeted us one by one and asked our names.
My realization in this encounter is (1) I am able to realize that not all patients with autism
are dumb, many are intellectually gifted yet their expressions and emotions differ, (3) being a
Special Education Teacher is a very difficult job, (2) I am able to interact with the special
students and know and understand their situation, and (3) I had learned many things and ideas on
dealing with special children together with identifying their strengths, weaknesses and
uniqueness to anyone else.
