Lesson: 3rd conditional

Materials: PowerPoint, Whiteboard, Markers, and 3rd conditional exercises.


Anticipated problems for Teacher:
1. 3rd conditional statements consist of complicated grammar and T might have
trouble explaining to Ss.
Solution: T will present a step by step chart that will break down each 3rd
conditional statement to make sense of the grammatical process.
Anticipated problems for Students:
1. Ss may confuse the 3rd conditional with the 1st or 2nd conditional due to the
similarity of names and structure.
Solution: T will categorize and break down the structure of the 3rd conditional so
that it is easier for the students to spot the difference between 1st and 2nd
conditional phrases.

Objectives:
Advance level students are able to do the following:
1.Use the 3rd conditional effectively in their speech.
2. To synthesize possibilities that are impossible.
3. To complete half written 3rd conditional sentences.

T will instruct Ss to think of possibilities that will never be true
T will then write two titles on the white board. The titles will be and impossible possibility, and a wish.
T will ask Ss to choose one category and write either a possibility or a wish.

As the Ss will write one sentence each.


T will talk about the written possibilities or wishes with the class.
T will ask gist questions to elicit more from the students:
-1. What is the difference between a possibility and wish?
-2. Does is have to be in the past?
-3. Can a 3rd conditional be about the future?

T will then explain that 3rd conditional talks about the past while 1st and 2nd conditional talk about the future.
T will write down an example sentence on the board to help students with the 3rd conditional statement:
If I had a pet dog, It would have disturbed my sleep at night.

T will ask Ss to write down five 3rd conditional statements on a piece of paper.
Once the Ss will have completed their statements, they will be expected to fold their papers and give it to the T.
T will re-distribute the papers and Ss will read out all five 3rd conditional statements written by their peers.
T will present the concept in a PowerPoint presentation.
T will explain the definition of 3rd conditional and show examples to create familiarity with the concept.
3rd conditional talks about things in the past which did not happen. Therefore, theres no possibility of it ever happening.

T will encourage Ss to read the example sentences aloud with the T.


T will then ask CCQs

-2. Is 3rd conditional written in the past? Yes or No?

T will ask Ss to form pairs and sit with their respective partners.
T will instruct the Ss to do the following:
Ss will be required to complete sentences that are half incomplete. The sentences will have the first half of the 3rd
conditional written and Ss will be required to complete the result possibility part of the statement.
