    SyllabusforClinicalExplorationProgramsforBioengineeringStudents

    Objective:ThegoaloftheClinicalExplorationProgramforbioengineeringstudentsis
    tointroducestudentstothemedicalfieldandidentifythroughobservationsomeofthe
    problemsthatexistinthepracticeofmedicine.Participantsofthisprogramwillbe
    pairedwithahealthcareprofessionaltoserveasamentorduringobservations.
    Studentsaretobeactivelythinkingabouthowtheycanusetheirbackgroundinscience
    andengineeringtobrainstormsolutionand/orfutureengineeringprojects.

    ExpectationsforStudents:
    Studentsareexpectedtoberespectfultomentorsandpatientsaswellasstrictly
    adheretoHIPAApatientprivacystandards.
    Studentswillbeassistedinobtainingtherequiredproofofallnecessary
    vaccinationsandsecuritybadges.Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytohavethese
    thingsreadyduringtheirfirstdayofobservation.
    Duringobservations,studentsareexpectedtodressappropriatelyandrepresent
    theBioengineeringDepartmentwiththeirbestbehavior.
    Studentsshouldshowuptomeetingsontimeandrespondtoemailsandcallsin
    apromptmanner.
    Attheendoftheprogram,studentswillbeexpectedtowriteathoughtful
    reflectionontheirexperience.

    RequiredVaccinations:
    AcompletedimmunizationhistorymustbeprovidedandreviewedbyEmployeeHealth
    aspartoftheapplicationpacket.Thisincludes:

    TwoMMRvaccinesspacedatleast30daysapartandafter1yearofage.
    Positiveantibodytitersmaybeacceptedinlieuofvaccinations.
    Twovaricellavaccinesspacedatleast30daysapartandafter1yearofage,or
    historyofdisease.Positiveantibodytitersmaybeacceptedinlieuof
    vaccinations.
    DTP,DTaP,orTdarenotinterchangeableorequivalenttotheTdapvaccine,
    andrecordofadministrationmustbeprovided.AcurrentTdapboosteris
    requiredinadditiontotheinitialimmunization.
    Recordofacurrentfluvaccinationmustbeprovided,oronemustbe
    administeredbyEmployeeHealth.Thiswillbeprovidedfreeofchargefrom
    EmployeeHealth.

    Twotuberculosis(TB)skintestsplacedatleastoneweekapart.Themostrecent
    TBtestmustbeplacedwithin30daysofobservationstartdate.Thiswillbe
    providedfreeofchargefromEmployeeHealth.
    ApplicantsforObservationalPrivilegeswhohaveapositiveTBskintestmust
    alsosubmittheresultsofasubsequentchestxray.Thiswillneedtobeprovided
    bytheapplicant.

    ExpectationsforMentors:
    Mentorsshouldbewillingtocommitatleastoneobservationexperienceper
    weektoallowstudentstoobservethemduringtheirdailyduties.
    Inadditiontoprovidinginformationonthemedicalside,mentorsshouldalso
    explaindevices,tools,andmaterialswhenpossible.Thiswillallowthestudents
    togainthemostfromtheexperienceonboththemedicalandengineeringsides.
