Define and Design

Lesson Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to have students create a deeper
understanding of how various negative connotations and vocabulary of words and
actions which reflect our culture in Canada. Students will investigate various vocabulary
words and language which impacts our views of multiculturalism in our society.
Student Outcomes:
Describe trends that reflect the globalization of culture.
Analyze factors that contribute to the globalization of culture.
Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of globalization of culture.
Authentic Student Assessment:
Students will be given oral formative feedback based on the product they produce.
Students will be summatively assessed on a scale of 1-5 in relation to whether or not
they have met the outcome for this task. Written formative feedback will also be
provided along with this score.
Prior Knowledge:
It is expected that students will likely have some familiarity with some of the words
given to the class in this activity, mainly through exposure within the media. Students
may have also seen and studied similar language in English 7-9. It is also expected that
students know how to effectively research and determine an appropriate definition using
an online source, and modify it to produce grade 9 acceptable language.
Lesson:
Students will work in pairs (their choice) and will have the opportunity to
choose a word from the list provided.
They will then research the definition and select an appropriate image. Using
this information and specific guidelines, they will create a rough copy. Following
this, they are to show the rough copy to the teacher for feedback.
Following this, students are to create a mini poster displaying their information.
The poster must be colourful, attractive, and draw attention to the positive
message rather than focus on the negative.
After completion, students will present their mini poster to the class.

Word list
Colouring supplies
Coloured paper/cardstock
Scissors

Printer

Closure:
Following the presentations, students will be asked to share examples of these
popular words from within personal experiences or the media.
Students will then pass in their posters for assessment.
Professional Growth Target:
Learn the names of the students in 9A, 9B, and 9C.
Ensure students view me as their teacher and that transition between Kathryns
teaching to my takeover is smooth.
