Around the World Canada Research and Presentations

Lesson Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to allow students to practice research and
presentation skills. Students are also working on developing accurate comparisons
between societies and cultures of various countries. Students will be learning more
about the home countries of our international students at NGRHS.
Student Outcomes:
Describe trends that reflect the globalization of culture.
Analyze factors that contribute to the globalization of culture.
Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of globalization of culture.
Authentic Student Assessment:
For the first Around the World country Canada, students will only be assessed
formatively in the form of oral and written feedback. For the other Around the World
countries which follow throughout the course of the semester, students will be
formatively assessed through feedback, but also given a summative score based on a
developed rubric which focuses on achievement of outcomes, and includes assessment
on presentation skills outcomes which are essential to the Grade 9 curriculum.
Prior Knowledge:
It is expected that students will have some knowledge and skills in terms of appropriate
and accurate research. They will be reminded about the importance of using multiple
sources, thoroughly reading information, checking dates, checking sources, and
narrowing field of search. It is also expected that students will be somewhat familiar
with the research guide provided in relation to Canada from living here either for the
majority of their life, or for a short time period (international students). Students
should also have some familiarity with the use of visual creation software, such as
PowerPoint or Prezi.
Lesson:
Students will be divided into groups of 3-5 and each group will be responsible for
a small list of research criteria.
Students will work with their groups to research their assigned areas using our
school library facilities. They are encouraged to use print and web resources.
As a group they will split the research duties, and then compile their findings and
then create a visual using technology to present their findings.
Following the completion of research and creation of visuals, students will
present their findings using appropriate presentation skills to their classmates.
The students who are not presenting, will be required to take notes and fill in
the sections they were not assigned to complete on the Around the World
research sheet during the presentations.

Materials:
Library Booking computers and pull print sources
Class set of Around the World research sheets
Students need to bring their memory sticks
Closure:
Together as a class, we will review some areas of the research that we found to be very
interesting or unique. Students will have a period to ask questions of their classmates
for further clarification on particular aspects of their findings and presentations.
Professional Growth Target:
Identify students in each particular class who require extra attention and begin
to come up with unique strategies on how to personally assist them.
